Cancer claims one person every minute of every day in the United States. Worldwide, the disease kills more than 6 million people annually.
Network evening news anchors Charles Gibson, Katie Couric and Brian Williams will announce the initiative together during live appearances Wednesday on CBS’s “The Early Show,” ABC’s “Good Morning America,” and NBC’s “Today Show.”
“For people struggling with this disease, or those who will be diagnosed, scientific breakthroughs can be a matter of life or death -- literally. We want everyone to know that they can make a difference in this fight,” said Couric. “Television is a notoriously competitive business. For the three major broadcast networks to join forces is a wonderful example of the power of working together, and we’re very grateful to have the opportunity to reach people all over the country through this show.”
The Stand Up To Cancer special will feature live performances by legendary recording artists. Stars from film and television will perform and present filmed content giving viewers insight into cancer.
“Katie, Charlie and Brian will report on potentially life-saving research, speaking with both patients and scientists. We hope to entertain you, educate you, move and inspire you,” said Laura Ziskin, who will produce the September 5th broadcast. Ziskin is a cancer survivor.
In their appearance on The Early Show Wednesday, Couric, Williams and Gibson all told about cancer striking their families:
"That television show, September 5, really will be a major, seminal event," Gibson observed.
Doing it is "an absolute natural" Williams remarked.
And Couric noted that, "This is an opportunity to serve the greater good, to put aside our competitive differences. I mean, we're all friends. I have so much admiration and respect for both Brian and Charles. ... And I thought, 'You know, we are really symbolic of the effort that we're trying to do.' We're trying to get scientists and researchers all over the country to collaborate, to put aside their competitive differences. And we're so on the brink ... of great discoveries (in) cancer research. The technology is there. The science is there. But we need more money. One out of ten promising proposals is funded. That's it. That leaves 90 percent on the table."
In addition to the nationally televised event, key elements of the initiative include: Standup2cancer.org, which will foster an online community for everyone affected by cancer; and a series of TV, radio and print PSAs featuring celebrities and members of the general public.
“Not only has cancer touched all of our media organizations in profound ways, but it has touched each of us personally. This extraordinary broadcast will serve a number of purposes - we’ll share vital information with our viewers and hopefully raise funds that are so critical in the fight against this insidious disease,” said Brian Williams.
Television is a uniquely powerful medium and the networks joining forces offer an unparalleled opportunity to communicate loud and clear that we all have a stake in the fight against cancer.
Leslie Moonves, President & Chief Executive Officer, CBS Corporation“There has been progress on both the research and awareness fronts; as a result, there are over ten million cancer survivors in the U.S. today," Charles Gibson said. "More work urgently needs to be done so that more people will survive.”
Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) was established by a group of media, entertainment and philanthropic leaders, whose lives have all been affected by cancer in significant ways.
The SU2C leadership team includes Katie Couric; the Entertainment Industry Foundation, represented by Board of Directors Chairperson Sherry Lansing (who is Founder of the Sherry Lansing Foundation) and CEO Lisa Paulsen; Laura Ziskin; the Noreen Fraser Foundation and its executives Noreen Fraser (who is also a cancer survivor), Woody Fraser, Rusty Robertson and Sue Schwartz; and nonprofit executive Ellen Ziffren.
"Television is a uniquely powerful medium and the networks joining forces offer an unparalleled opportunity to communicate loud and clear that we all have a stake in the fight against cancer," said Leslie Moonves, President & Chief Executive Officer, CBS Corporation.
"Through the unity of broadcasters, entertainers and cancer groups alike, and the giving spirit of the audience at home, this television event has the potential to make a profound impact on our society's ability to understand and battle this terrible disease," he added.

- My name is Anna Alioto and I would like to share with you a new, safe, procedure for preparation for colonoscopy.
For most people, it is not the colonoscopy that is difficult or scary (you are usually under some type of local), it is the preparation that keeps people from undergoing colonoscopy. Until now, the standard methods involve drinking a lot of liquid and lot of "toilet time".
This new method of Colon HydroTherapy using the Toxygen Model BSC-UV colon hydrotherapy machine has a blind medical study behind it that was accepted and delivered as an oral presentation at the American College of Gastroenterology -ACG- Annual Meeting, October 2006. (Only 1% to 2% of all studies submitted, from thousands of abstracts are selected for oral presentation. A testament to how important the ACG feels this topic and research is.)
* Study showed Hydrotherapy was good or better than alternative preparations and patients preferred Hydrotherapy.
* 150 patients evaluated to compare Hydrotherapy to the present standard pre-colonoscopy preparation Methods of Golytely and Fleets Phosphasoda.

On December 12, 2008, an FDA Warning was issued about the danger of using Phoso-soda Fleets (standard preparation for colonoscopy). FDA has become aware of reports of acute phosphate nephropathy, a type of acute kidney injury, associated with the use of oral sodium phosphate products (OSP) for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy or other procedures. These products include the prescription products, Visicol and OsmoPrep, and OSPs available over-the-counter without a prescription as laxatives (e.g., Fleet Phospho-soda). In some cases when used for bowel cleansing, these serious adverse events have occurred in patients without identifiable factors that would put them at risk for developing acute kidney injury.

Medicavelli HydroHealth Industries, Ltd. is a start-up medical device distribution company that, through a recently completed clinical study in conjunction with Danbury Hospital, has identified an opportunity to provide colon hydrotherapy as a preferred method of preparation by both physicians and patients for use in colorectal screenings in the United States. We feel that patients should have the option of a safer method for preparation for colonoscopy and want to spread the word. Currently, this method is being used at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut; Dr. Antonelle in White Plains, NY; Dr. Nuako in Union, Tennessee; Dr. Thompson in Las Vegas, NV, and now at Acqua di Roma in North Beach, San Francisco, CA.
We feel everyone should have a choice.
I appreciate you taking the time to read this and if you are interested in doing a story, both Dr. Fiorito and Dr. Antonelle are available for interviews.
(Channel 8 news in Connecticut did a story last year at Danbury Hospital and it was really compelling)

- BioCurex Develops New Format for Cancer Blood Test; Results Confirm Accuracy
Wednesday May 28, 9:20 am ET
BioCurex Inc. today announced that it has developed an ELISA blood test using RECAF technology and reports results comparable to its other test formats.
BioCurex views the development as an important milestone in its efforts to commercialize its RECAF technology for cancer detection.
BioCurex is also advancing development of a point-of-care (rapid test), shown to work in the detection of various types of cancers. The rapid test is intended to be used at the doctor''s office and it should not be confused with ELISA, RIA or chemiluminescence, which are used in the laboratory for manual or automated testing.
BioCurex is pleased to report results obtained using the RECAF-ELISA test on 77 bladder, kidney, stomach, and other cancer samples, compared to 93 normal donor samples. The results evidence a sensitivity of 90% with 95% specificity. Sensitivity is the ability of a test to detect existing cancers (if all patients who have a cancer test positive = 100% sensitivity). Specificity represents how well the test avoids false positives (no false positives = 100% specificity).
BioCurex expects to present the results at an International cancer congress later this year. - Reply to this comment
- %u201CIn memory of our members who have recently passed away, never having been given the chance Provenge recipient Eduardo Garcia had, we will continue to fight on, every day, in every way we can. Please come out and join us,%u201D CareToLive spokesperson, Mike Kearney, said.

- Over a year has passed, and 27,000 American men have died without hope, since the FDA denied the licensure of Provenge, an immunotherapy the FDA panel voted 17-0 safe and overwhelmingly voted effective. This is a noninvasive, non-toxic, immune building treatment, which works by employing your own body%u2019s healthy cells to fight the cancer.
Men like Eduardo Garcia, who have had the 3 treatments, have gone from being incapacitated, to living healthy, productive lives, for as long as seven years and counting. Dendreon, the company that perfected this treatment, also has similar treatments for breast, ovarian, colon, lung, kidney, and cervical cancers, in their sights.
The dysfunctional FDA''s reason for delay has never been explained, as it was not science based, since survival and safety have been clearly demonstrated.
CareToLive filed a Citizens Petition for the FDA to reconsider the wrongful denial, (the only recourse the FDA allows), on July 26, 2007. The FDA has failed to follow Federal regulation and to this day they have not properly responded to our Petition, which seeks immediate access to Provenge for these desperate men. The FDA also refuses to respond to the CareToLive Freedom of Information Act request, which they know would prove that a few FDA insiders, who cared more about serving their own interests, rather than the best interest of the patients, purposely sabotaged Provenge. - Reply to this comment

COAST-TO-COAST PROSTATE CANCER DEMONSTRATIONS ON MAY 30th IN PROTEST OF FDA FAILURE TO APPROVE SAFE, EFFECTIVE IMMUNOTHERAPY
On May 30, 2008, CareToLive will take to the streets with coast-to-coast protests in Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Madison, Atlanta, Seattle, Dearborn, and Tampa. Joining us will be the Cancer Cure Coalition, the Abigail Alliance, and A Right To Live. We are asking all patient advocates to come out and attend a protest.
1 in 6 men get prostate cancer. 75 American men die from it every day. The FDA has not approved a treatment for stage IV prostate cancer in over 43 years.
CareToLive, a not for profit corporation, seeks transparency and accountability from the FDA, as to why they disregarded the advice of their hand selected Congressionally mandated Advisory Panel of experts, who voted Provenge overwhelmingly safe and effective. Without cause or explanation, in an unprecedented action, the FDA denied licensure. We are seeking immediate access to Provenge for all men with end stage prostate cancer. - Reply to this comment
- This would be a perfect time for The American Cancer Society to recommend Vitamin D as a preventive for Cancer. Canada and other countries have done this but not The American Cancer Society. They recommend early testing and screening. It is time to suggest a preventive, the Nutrition World is way ahead of The American Cancer Society.

- We don''t need any more cancer research. We know what cancer is. We don''t need to research it anymore. We now need to move into developing the tools to deal with cancerous cells. Those technologies no longer fall under cancer research alone. They are things like Nano research, the human Genome project and Epigenetics. Epigenetics is probably the most promising route for a cure. It would allow us to reprogram a cancer cell turning it back into a normal cell. Epigenetics would also help cure aids by shutting down the cellular receptors that allow the virus to infect a cell. It would also help with any number of other diseases. I''m sure this money will be wasted.

- A tiny company in Vancouver, Biocurex, may have the closest thing yet to a ''magic bullet'' for cancer: RECAF--a stunningly accurate and sensitive biomarker for almost all cancers. RECAF could yield a simple blood test for early detection, and therapeutic applications later. But it''s a mystery as to why the major pharms won''t treat it seriously. Abbot Labs sat on its hands through a three-year license. It''s an absolute scandal.
RECAF needs to be funded and fast-tracked. NOW. - Reply to this comment

Indeed - if the money used to fight this useless "war" were spent on cancer research, we would be 20 years ahead of where we are now in solutions and cures. Iraq - what a *horrific* waste of taxpayer funds... - Reply to this comment
