(CBS/AP)  Barack Obama stepped to the brink of victory in the Democratic presidential race Tuesday night, defeating Hillary Clinton in the Oregon primary and moving within 100 delegates of the total he needs to claim the prize at the party convention this summer.

"You have put us within reach of the Democratic nomination," he told cheering supporters in Iowa, the overwhelmingly white state that launched him, a black, first-term senator from Illinois, on his improbable path to victory last January. (Watch Obama video)

Clinton countered with a lopsided win in Kentucky, a victory with scant political value in a race moving inexorably in Obama's direction.

Finance reports filed yesterday show Clinton in the red, saddled with nearly $20 million in debts. Obama, by contrast, entered May with $37 million in the bank, while John McCain entered the month with $22 million on hand. (Read more on the candidates' finances.)

With 83 percent of the votes counted in Oregon's unique mail-in primary, Obama led Clinton 58 percent to 42 percent. With all precincts reporting in Kentucky, Clinton bested Obama 65 percent to 30 percent.

Obama won enough delegates Tuesday night to claim the majority of all pledged delegates to be elected in primaries and caucuses, reports CBS News. Obama has 1,649 pledged delegates to Clinton's 1,496. That total does not include Michigan or Florida.

According to the latest CBS News count, Obama now has a total of 1,955 delegates, which leaves him less than 100 away from the 2,026 needed to capture the nomination. The former first lady has 1,773. That tally includes the nearly 800 superdelegates, the party leaders who hold the balance of power at the convention. (See the full state-by-state tally)

In Kentucky, CBS News reports Clinton will win 35 delegates and Obama will win 14, with one left to be allocated. In Oregon, Obama will win 28, Clinton will win 19 and there are five unallocated.

"To the extent that the outcome of this race is uncertain, it’s devolved into an argument over mathematical computations," said CBSNews.com senior political editor Vaughn Ververs. "But the numbers aren’t adding up for Hillary Clinton, and barring a totally unexpected and dramatic reversal of fortune, she’s not going to persuade those superdelegates that two plus two somehow equals five." (Read "Obama Pivots Toward Fall Challenges," by Ververs)

"This continues to be a tough fight, and I have fought it the only way I know how - with determination, by never giving up and never giving in," Clinton told supporters in Kentucky.

"I have done it not because I've wanted to demonstrate my toughness," she said, "but because I believe passionately that for the sake of our country, the Democrats must take back the White House and end Republican rule. ... That's why I'm still running and that's why you're still voting," she said.

Clinton claimed the popular vote lead in her speech to supporters, counting the disputed Michigan and Florida primaries. "This is one of the closest races for a party's nomination in modern history, she said.

Obama spoke before some 6,000 supporters at an outdoor rally with the Iowa Statehouse as a backdrop, celebrating in the state where his win in the opening contest of the presidential primary season helped reshape the race.

"Tonight, in the fullness of spring, with the help of those who stood up from Portland to Louisville, we have returned to Iowa with a majority of delegates elected by the American people and you have put us within reach of the Democratic nomination for president of the United States of America," Obama said.

According to CBS News exit polling, in Kentucky, 77 percent of Clinton voters said they would be dissatisfied if Obama was the Democratic nominee. Obama voters were about evenly split on whether they would be satisfied if Clinton got the nomination. (Exit Poll Data: Kentucky | Oregon)

In Kentucky, just 33 percent of Clinton voters said they would back Obama in the general election if he is the Democratic nominee - 42 percent said they will vote for Republican nominee-in-waiting McCain, and another 23 percent say they won’t vote. More Democrats also felt Clinton was the best candidate to beat McCain in the fall.

Oregon voters felt differently when asked about their feelings about the candidate they did not vote for, according to the exit poll. A majority of Clinton and Obama voters in the state would be satisfied if their opponent got the nomination. And 68 percent of Clinton voters say they will back Obama in the general election if he is the nominee and 80 percent of Obama voters say they will back Clinton in the general election. However, a majority of Oregon Democrats said they thought Obama would be a stronger general election candidate in the fall.

Democratic voters in both states said the economy was the most important issue, with 67 percent of voters in Kentucky saying that. Voters differed, however, on whether to suspend the gas tax was a good idea. In Kentucky, 59 percent thought it would be good idea and 37 percent said it would not be. In Oregon, 64 percent said they thought it would be a bad idea and 26 percent said it would be a good idea.

Since the vote is by mail in Oregon, the exit poll was taken by telephone and completed on Sunday.

In Kentucky, Clinton won among almost all key demographic groups in the state, according to the exit polls. She won 67 percent of women and 64 percent of men. She won 79 percent of blue collar whites. By wide margins, she won those earning less or more than $50,000 and those with or without a college degree.

In Oregon, Obama won most demographic groups. He won male voters 65 percent to 34 percent and women voters 51 percent to 48 percent. Obama also carried those with or without a college degree and those who made more or less than $50,000. Clinton won blue collar whites in Oregon, but by a much smaller margin than she did in Kentucky - 54 percent to 46 percent.

Clinton won among Kentucky voters who decided in the last week and those who decided in the last three days. However, Obama won those voters in Oregon.

truthyness- I agree- keep dreaming. The math doesn''t add up for her- no matter how you slice it. Obama will lose to McCain because he has dangerous plans and has no experiance. He is a senator for all of two years- did not vote on many many things- and has been in hiding- why are people so naive and want such a dangerous leader? Wishful thinking on their part- thst is most dangerous when you don''t know how much experaince is cvalued. Would you hire him to teach your children or someone much more experianced? Simple question. Simple answer.

It is my opinion that Hillary is staying in because some of her middle east buddies are going to try to smoke Obama!

There is no way they are going to let Obama get America out of the middle east and stop all those Trillions of American tax dollars from going to Israel or Saudi or Haliburton or the Defense Industry that is feeding off American People!

Just like Bobby Kennedy one of these countries are going to try to hit him! You watch...

And when this happens I hope the American people are strong enough to march on Washington and drag those lobbyist and politicians out in the street and give them some American Street Justice!

AMERICA STAND UP OR SHUT UP!

As Ronny boy said there you go again CBS. You never fail to call Hillary Rodham Clinton by name but never call Barack Hussein Obama by his WHY. Is there so much shame attached to Hussein that you dare not call him by his Allah given name? Hillary is proud of her God given name. Argue as much as you want when Obama was born it was to a Muslim family, hence a Muslim name. I am not saying good or bad just asking why no pride in your hereditary.

wrong...just because Obama is just about to get a majority of votes doesn''t mean Hillary has the other half. your forgetting about all the people who voted for Edwards. And Edwards supports Obama. theres no way hillary has even close enough votes to win.

Mitt Romney, on the "Iran Debate": "Barack is doing his very best, along with the media that supports him, to try and change the discussion, to say ''Oh, this is about talking with the Iranians.'' This isn''t about talking with the Iranians. We talk to the Iranians now. ...

What Barack Obama has said is that he would meet without precondition with Ahmadinejad, the leader of the largest state sponsor of terror in the world, along with Castro, Assad, Kim Jong-Il. It''s a naive statement. Hillary Clinton called it for what it was when they were debating on this very issue."

....................It''s really great to see someone "report" what the issue really is.

Now if we can get the most corrupt institution in America, our mostly liberal MSM wolfpack press to present these facts the way they really are.

I guess that''s asking a lot for our "in-the-tank" for Obama wolfpack press..........................sad.

Obama reminds me of Bush. He''s trying to convince us he is the nominee when he''s not. Bush did this 1 month after he invaded Iraq, saying "mission accomplished". This Dem will not vote for Obama. I will be voting McCain if Obama is the nominee. Obama is too far left, & too inexperienced to be president. The DNC is making a huge mistake with Obama.

Russia and China: Hold Joint Military Exercise
The Associated Press Published: August 17, 2007

CHEBARKUL TESTING RANGE, Russia: President Vladimir Putin said Friday he had ordered strategic bombers to resume regular Long-Range Patrols as Russian & Chinese Forces held their 1ST Joint Military Exercise on Russian soil.

NOTE: A show of Armed Muscle Aimed at Sending a Pointed Message to the.... United States.

The resumption of bombing patrols, which analysts say signaled a significant change for Russian military policy, comes amid a growing chill in U.S.-Russian Relations, strained over Washington`s criticism of Russia`s democracy record, Moscow`s objections to U.S. Missile Defense Plans and Differences over Global Crises.

Both Moscow and Beijing share a Heightening Distrust of what they see as the United States` Oversized Role and Influence in Global Politics, and the two former Cold War rivals have forged a "Strategic Partnership" aimed at Counter Balancing Washington`s Policies.

What a Great Supporter of US Veterans

Source: Yahoo News/Politics

McCain, the all-but-nominated Republican presidential candidate, opposes a Democratic-backed bill that would significantly expand the breadth of education benefits for veterans, first adopted for those returning from World War II.

Democrats want the proposal included in a war spending bill the Senate is scheduled to vote on this week.

Sen. Barack Obama, McCains most likely general election opponent, already has raised objections to McCains resistance. And on Tuesday, a veterans group that has been critical of the war in Iraq is launching an ad in Washington to pressure McCain to change his mind.

By taking issue with McCain on the subject of veterans, Democrats hope to weaken one of his biggest assets %u2014 his personal biography as a former Navy pilot who became a prisoner of the North Vietnamese and endured torture at the hands of his captors.

The legislation, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia and Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, also veterans of Vietnam, would guarantee full tuition payments to veterans at any public school in their home state. Its expected cost is $52 billion over 10 years.

McCain & His Saudia Arabian Connection

Loefflers firm also has lobbied for other foreign interests and foreign governments. Newsweek reported over the weekend that Loefflers firm was paid $15 million by Saudi Arabia.

The news magazine also said Loeffler listed meeting McCain along with the Saudi ambassador to "discuss US-Kingdom of Saudi Arabia relations," even though Loeffler told a reporter last month that he had not discussed his clients with McCain.

Caught & Outted: McCains New Policy Prohibits any staffer on the campaign from being a registered lobbyist or foreign agent.

Clinton or McCain: Both voted for and still support the war.

In fact, Clinton is the ONLY democrat with the BALLS to tell the democratic party that we ARE staying in Iraq.

Obama will get it..he''s the golden child...the flavor of the month...the new wind...and while I can appreciate all the politic-playing that has gone into making him the savior of the day, I kind of hate seeing Hillary get the boot in such an undignified manner. Just to think a few short months ago she was the golden child...the flavor of the month...the new wind...how fickle the powers that be are when it comes to picking world leaders. Just remember that, Obama, when they all turn on you...and they will.

The list of people that have publically announced that Hillary has a better chance of winning in November has been astounding yet they cast their votes for Obama. The superdelegates should decide not the voters----well, I hate to tell you a fact, it is the "voters" that will decide this Election in November not the Democrats superdelegates. Obama is a fraud and more is exposed each and every day. His slogan has changed to "No We Can''t". America he says has to be more like Africa and the Middle East...we cannot drive our SUV''s (most Americans do not have SUV''s), eat as much as we have, not heat or cool our homes to desired temperatures...America has to change and join the rest of the World in poverty and shortcomings. He is a sick man. America is great and we should fix whatever problems we have "roll up our sleeves" and work together to achieve more greatness and spread this throughout the world rather than the message we have to decline. Superdelegates if you give your votes to Obama you will be destroying the very foundation of "freedom" in America.

Hmmmmm... Portland has about 500,000 people so 75,000 represents about 15% of the city''s population. Not to mention that 75,000 is the LARGEST crowd that ANY candidate has drawn to date. And, yes, the crowd was mostly WHITE, as is Portland. 88% WHITE.

I found nothing in the news that suggests Springsteen was there, although his song "The Rising" is often played at Obama rallies.

According to Springsteen, "Obama is head and shoulders above the rest."

I tend to agree Although Obama wasn''t my first choice, now that the remaining choices are another Clinton and McCain, both Bush-clones, Obama is my only choice.

______________________________

Yes, and she KNEW she was the ''golden child'' but her "undoing" is her own fault.

Consider these facts:

Clinton''s campaign blew it in several areas and made several critical mistakes; among them she...
- misjudged the mood;
- underestimated the caucus states;
- relied on old money; and she
- never counted on the long haul.

Even in the states she won, the exit polls showed that people just don''t think she is honest and trustworthy.

Her message was inconsistent throughout her campaign; people arent sure what Clinton stands for and neither is she.

She seriously underestimated the popularity of an exceptionally gifted man who in many ways embodies the diversity that the U.S. is moving toward; somebody who is well-positioned to capture that mood, the very mood that Clinton misjudged.

Clinton thought she had the nomination "locked in" and was already campaigning the general election when she should have been paying serious attention to the primary and her very smart competition.

The Clintons will DO ANYTHING to gain and keep POWER.

If Hellary can''t beat a young inexperienced black man then she sure as hell can''t beat McCain. She and McCain are a lot alike, and she STILL supports the war.

Careful there rowdy, don''t spill any booze or drop any hot seeds on your lily white robe. You might have to buy a new sheet before the next Klan meeting.

Obama:

won''t debate HIllary,

didn''t show up in West Virginia to show people he was the real deal,

didn''t show up in Kentucky to show people he was the real deal,

seems to walk away a lot when it''s unfriendly territory and he might not have a script in front of him.

Putin is licking his lips!

Additionally, Deval Patrick, the governor of my state, friend of Obama and the other "Hope and CHange" candidate, turned out to be a big bag of wind. I''ve learned my lesson. Fool me once, shame on you, but fool me twice, shame on me!

Kentucky State Motto. United we stand, divided we fall.

Oregon State Motto. She flies with her own wings.

Obama Motto. Change, yes we can.

Clinton Motto. Sour grapes make a gripe whine.

Is it me or does hillarys voting demographic get smaller and smaller? she was the champion of everyone now shes the champion of uneducated, poor, cant get any gas, hard working white americans. i thinks shes put herself in a difficult box. she talks about disenfranchising millions of people in MI and FL but shes doing that with her campaign talk.
