Marines Given Jail For Japan Sex Assaults

Staff Sgt. Gets 4 Years, Lance Cpl. Gets 2 In Separate Cases, Both Cleared Of Rape

(CBS/AP)  Two U.S. Marines were sentenced to prison time Friday on charges related to sexual assaults on two different young women in Japan, but both men have avoided rape convictions.

Kyodo News reported that a U.S. court-martial had sentenced Staff Sgt. Tyrone L. Hadnott to four years after convicting him of abusive sexual conduct with a Japanese teenager in Okinawa, in southern Japan.

Four other charges, including rape of a child under 16, making a false official statement, adultery and "kidnapping through inveigling," or trickery, were dropped in a plea bargain, according to Kyodo.

Another U.S. Marine accused in the alleged gang rape of a Japanese woman last year was sentenced to two years in prison for "wrongful sexual contact and indecent acts" but cleared of rape, the U.S. military said.

Lance Cpl. Larry A. Dean, 20, was one of four Marines facing court-martial for the alleged rape of a 19-year-old woman in the southern city of Hiroshima in October.

Dean was also found guilty Thursday of "fraternization and violating military orders about liberty and alcohol" but cleared of rape and kidnapping charges, according to a statement by the Marine Corps Air Station in Iwakuni in southern Japan.

Dean was also dishonorably discharged. His sentence also included the forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and a reduction in rank to private.

The other Marines charged are Gunnery Sgt. Carl M. Anderson, 39, Gunnery Sgt. Jarvis D. Raynor, 34, and Sgt. Lanaeus J. Braswell, 25. Anderson and Raynor will be court-martialed later this month and Braswell in June, said Master Gunnery Sgt. John Cordero on Friday.

Japanese authorities investigated the incident, but local prosecutors dropped the case in November.

About 50,000 U.S. troops are based in Japan under a security pact between the two countries. Many Japanese complain of crime, pollution and noise associated with the bases.

Japanese anger over the U.S. military presence has grown in recent months following the Hadnott case and the killing of a taxi driver near a U.S. naval base in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo.

I am also retired law enforcememnt. When you go on jury duty you swear to follow the rules and convict on evidence and not opinion. I am not sympathetic to these guys. Regarding the story we heard from ranger1948. This guy says he is retired military and retired law enforcement. He says he has a degree in Criminal Justice, with a minor in psychology. He would be 60 according to the 1948. I was in the military, 7th Military Police at Fort Ord, California. I never met a person with a college degree, over the age of fifty, who could not spell or type proficiently. Let alone form correct sentences using proper grammer. I think I would be more careful who I told to get an education so they can make a sensible judgement in a case, when my own education was so lacking. When he learns to spell, punctuate and type, maybe he can judge someones education or lack thereof. I would think anyone who worked in law enforcement would realize that plea agreements happen. Plea agreements do not indicate lack of guilt. Plea agreements indicate lack of conviction. A lack of conviction by the prosecutor, to try the case. They can be guilty but if the prosecutor feels the case is not strong enough, or he feels pressured, or doesn''t want to put the victim thru embarrassement of a trial where she relives the abuse, he makes a plea agreement. So I guess I find the ranger to be, "full of malarky", as we old timers are fond of saying. Maybe he is a pedophile his self. Alot of convicted pedophiles have children, and some really worked in law enforcement and were in the military.

People in the states do not realize the beauty of things in Thailand. The people are friendly, and there are many things to see and do. I can take a two hour river cruise at night and have dinner on he cruise. The last time we went there were four of us and it cost me like $20 for everything. The Thai people are very hard workers and it is a struggle for many to make a living with the economy he way it is. Ther ar modern temples and ruins to see. The monks come around the shops of a morning and the shop keepers ive them food for the day. It is considered an honor to give to the monks. They lead a poor and simple life but lead by example. There are temple ruins you can see go on elephant rides. A lot of the elephant owners are out of work now and it is costly to feed an elephant so they bring them to the neighborhoods and sell bags of sugarcane to let the people feed the elephants. It is a great experience. I have been to a monastery where they let the wild animals come and go as they please and had my picture taken sitting on a rock with two full grown bengal tigers. The budhist teach we can live in harmony with all things. I went to a village that worships king cobra''s and got to hold a ten foot long king cobra without controlling his head, he as totally docile.
