Washington Post: Obama Campaigners Encounter Raw And Surprising Racism As They Push Democratic Frontrunner

  • Timeline Democratic Campaign Trail

Notable events in the race for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

(Washingtonpost.com)  This story was written by Kevin Merida.

Danielle Ross was alone in an empty room at the Obama campaign headquarters in Kokomo, Ind., a cellphone in one hand, a voter call list in the other. She was stretched out on the carpeted floor wearing laceless sky-blue Converses, stories from the trail on her mind. It was the day before Indiana's primary, and she had just been chased by dogs while canvassing in a Kokomo suburb. But that was not the worst thing to occur since she postponed her sophomore year at Middle Tennessee State University, in part to hopscotch America stumping for Barack Obama.

Here's the worst: In Muncie, a factory town in the east-central part of Indiana, Ross and her cohorts were soliciting support for Obama at malls, on street corners and in a Wal-Mart parking lot, and they ran into "a horrible response," as Ross put it, a level of anti-black sentiment that none of them had anticipated.

"The first person I encountered was like, 'I'll never vote for a black person,' " recalled Ross, who is white and just turned 20. "People just weren't receptive."

For all the hope and excitement Obama's candidacy is generating, some of his field workers, phone-bank volunteers and campaign surrogates are encountering a raw racism and hostility that have gone largely unnoticed -- and unreported -- this election season. Doors have been slammed in their faces. They've been called racially derogatory names (including the white volunteers). And they've endured malicious rants and ugly stereotyping from people who can't fathom that the senator from Illinois could become the first African American president.

The contrast between the large, adoring crowds Obama draws at public events and the gritty street-level work to win votes is stark. The candidate is largely insulated from the mean-spiritedness that some of his foot soldiers deal with away from the media spotlight.

Victoria Switzer, a retired social studies teacher, was on phone-bank duty one night during the Pennsylvania primary campaign. One night was all she could take: "It wasn't pretty." She made 60 calls to prospective voters in Susquehanna County, her home county, which is 98 percent white. The responses were dispiriting. One caller, Switzer remembers, said he couldn't possibly vote for Obama and concluded: "Hang that darky from a tree!"

Documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy, the daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy, said she, too, came across "a lot of racism" when campaigning for Obama in Pennsylvania. One Pittsburgh union organizer told her he would not vote for Obama because he is black, and a white voter, she said, offered this frank reason for not backing Obama: "White people look out for white people, and black people look out for black people."

Obama campaign officials say such incidents are isolated, that the experience of most volunteers and staffers has been overwhelmingly positive.

The campaign released this statement in response to questions about encounters with racism: "After campaigning for 15 months in nearly all 50 states, Barack Obama and our entire campaign have been nothing but impressed and encouraged by the core decency, kindness, and generosity of Americans from all walks of life. The last year has only reinforced Senator Obama's view that this country is not as divided as our politics suggest."

Campaign field work can be an exercise in confronting the fears, anxieties and prejudices of voters. Veterans of the civil rights movement know what this feels like, as do those who have been involved in battles over busing, immigration or abortion. But through the Obama campaign, some young people are having their first experience joining a cause and meeting cruel reaction.

On Election Day in Kokomo, a group of black high school students were holding up Obama signs along U.S. 31, a major thoroughfare. As drivers cruised by, a number of them rolled down their windows and yelled out a common racial slur for African Americans, according to Obama campaign staffers.

Frederick Murrell, a black Kokomo High School senior, was not there but heard what happened. He was more disappointed than surprised. During his own canvassing for Obama, Murrell said, he had "a lot of doors slammed" in his face. But taunting teenagers on a busy commercial strip in broad daylight? "I was very shocked at first," Murrell said. "Then again, I wasn't, because we have a lot of racism here."

The bigotry has gone beyond words. In Vincennes, the Obama campaign office was vandalized at 2 a.m. on the eve of the primary, according to police. A large plate-glass window was smashed, an American flag stolen. Other windows were spray-painted with references to Obama's controversial former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and other political messages: "Hamas votes BHO" and "We don't cling to guns or religion. Goddamn Wright."

Ray McCormick was notified of the incident at about 2:45 a.m. A farmer and conservationist, McCormick had erected a giant billboard on a major highway on behalf of Farmers for Obama. He also was housing the Obama campaign worker manning the office. When McCormick arrived at the office, about two hours before he was due out of bed to plant corn, he grabbed his camera and wanted to alert the media. "I thought, this is a big deal." But he was told Obama campaign officials didn't want to make a big deal of the incident. McCormick took photos anyway and distributed some.

"The pictures represent what we are breaking through and overcoming," he said. As McCormick, who is white, sees it, Obama is succeeding despite these incidents. Later, there would be bomb threats to three Obama campaign offices in Indiana, including the one in Vincennes, according to campaign sources.

Obama has not spoken much about racism during this campaign. He has sought to emphasize connections among Americans rather than divisions. He shrugged off safety concerns that led to early Secret Service protection and has told black senior citizens who worry that racists will do him harm: Don't fret. Earlier in the campaign, a 68-year-old woman in Carson City, Nev., voiced concern that the country was not ready to elect an African American president.

"Will there be some folks who probably won't vote for me because I am black? Of course," Obama said, "just like there may be somebody who won't vote for Hillary because she's a woman or wouldn't vote for John Edwards because they don't like his accent. But the question is, 'Can we get a majority of the American people to give us a fair hearing?' "

We don''t need Pennsylvania, Indiana or West Virginia. Bunch of hillbillies anyway who are simply out of touch with mainstream America. The Obama Shuffle will steamroll lil'' missy(Clinton)and grandpa(McCain)without these clowns. Like America really wants a woman handling two wars and an old man napping through critical intelligence briefings--NOT!!! Those hillbillies will know who their DADDY is real soon.

Barack Obama is more of an oasis of optimism and less of a mirage of same despair in the apathy desert that is American politics.

Like opinions every citizen has a single vote of equal worth.

Political candidate scrutiny is a good thing.

I challenge anybody to discover a thriving politician even in the United States to be free from any dubious link to something at sometime that would not offend or aggrieve someone somewhere.

Is Obama perfect no way. Can he learn more sure.

Can he realize enhanced understanding of all Americans concerns no doubt.

Perhaps for the first time in a long time ordinary voters feel drawn to a candidate like Obama because their one and only valued vote could actually make a noticeable compass heading direction change in national politics.

Voters believe that a better or positive outcome is possible even when there is some evidence to the contrary. Eureka.

Please exercise your right to debate and vote for who ever you want.

Respect the rights of others to vote and freely debate for their candidate.

Rejoice in Americas hard won freedoms to cast your vote with bona fide unfettered choice and to critically debate your choice for change openly.

Vile candidate or voter bashing with malice is a cowards folly on the low road to anarchy.

Here come all the America is Racist stories from NYT and WPO and Time and Newsweek. Obama cant win the White vote so we all are racist - 90% of blacks vote in lock step for Obama - thats more racists - at least 40% of White DEMs are voting for Obamination. The self hating White Liberals need to push the RACIST theme to make us all feel bad about not voting for a Black President. Too bad he''s more LIBERAL than Kennedy and Schumer and Reid and Pelosi and Boxer and Durbin.

A lot has been made in this election about the "age" divide between Obama and Clinton. I think this is code-speak for "race" divide.

The bad news is that there is still a lot of blatent (and not so blatent) racism in this country.

The good news is that among the younger generation, they seem to have put that garbage behind them. Perhaps those white, hardworking, undereducated, underemployed folks Hillary has been all too eager to exploit could learn a lesson or two from them!

Riptide213_ Nice post. On a differant note- does anyone think perhaps the Clintons have set the ball in motion for those who are making themselves known -more now than ever- to show the racist card towards Obama? I would not put it past them- it was them who said " We are hangin on just in case something happens" Someone should step up and put those Clintons in their right place- like jail.

-I wish those who said so were pretty old, I mean really old and that racism would die with them, pretty soon, for ever!

Oh my god! What is the matter with us? The ignorance and prejudice still existing in this country is mind-boggling and distressing. When I read remarks on these blogs blasting Michelle Obama for saying she''s proud of her country for the first time, I think to myself after reading this article, well, she may be proud but I''M not so proud, and I''m white. No, after reading this article I''m disgusted and dismayed and not proud at all and it doesn''t give me much hope for the human race that at this point in time we still have such stupidity and ignorance to contend with. If we humans can''t accept each other within our own country it doesn''t bode well for the concept of peace on earth. At this moment I am very ashamed of being an American.

Whine, whine, whine, whine...he who spouts racism merely continues to promote it he''s worn it like a shield in this campaign against anybody who criticized him.

And then his own supporters compare Hillary Clinton to Fatal Attraction, call her a monster for wanting to win the nomination, and all the male bigots in the US get up and applaud, as well as the pigs in our news media. And then those male bigots are the very ones that get up and call you a racist anytime you say anything critical of Obama the Scamma.

Truth is the pansy Obama needs to be called on for his corruption, not his race. But nobody seems to want to. They just want to live on dreams of purty words they fell in love with. Too bad they''ve been duped.

The good thing is that this campaign is bringing in a lot of young people who actually do think people should be judged by their character and actions and not just skin color. As the dead-enders who think race should be a factor in out lives die off, we as a country will be better off for it. I hope this election is a turning point for this country. It hurt me to read about what Jackie Robinson had to go through to integrate baseball and to read that we as a country have not progressed beyond that kind of thinking is very sad.

Hillary is promoting racism in her campaign. Saying that Obama can''t get white working class votes in a general election is a racism theory. To some extent I agree with her theory, but don''t think it will cause him to lose the election. I''m sure that the racist fringe will vote for McCain in the general election, as he has been soliciting the white born-again evangelical christian conservatives(racists) votes, and there are lot of so-called Democrats that are carbon copies of the white born-again evangelical christian conservatives(racists) Republicans. The only difference is the label not the content.

We all know how racists Hillary supporters can be. It is one thing that led me to the conclusion that there is not that much difference between Democrats and Republicans after all. Not in how they really review other races, not in what they are willing to do or say to get elected. Not in the reasons they will never vote for another race. Maybe when RowdyTexan, or croft, or Tracy Morgan, etc gets here, they can tell us their take/view/defence on why racism is a great position for supporting Hillary.

This is great for the country, it tells many of us who have been deaf, dumb and blind to still rampant racism, just how much it is NOT gone. Time for the blinders to come off--time to recognize one more reason why God may not be pleased with our country or our behavior.

There''s a difference between not voting for Obama for political reasons and not voting for him because he''s black. If you''re not voting for him because he''s black, then that''s racist. It''s not that difficult.

Another Texan says if you want to talk about corruption all you have to do is look at Hillary or John McCain. Whitewater Creek and the Keating Five were not imaginary happenings. One of John''s current advisors is(was until yesterday) a lobbyist for the Myanmar dictators, how much foreign money to he bring into McCain''s campaign coffers?

I will vote for Ralph Nader because Barak Obama supports H-1B. Studies have shown that you cannot even get an interview in Silicon Valley if your name sounds too Black. Meanwhile, Americans are training people from overseas in basic computer science.

There can be no high tech labor shortage when such a large portion of your domestic labor pool is discrimnated against. Obama has either sold out or has not looked closely enough at this issue.

I''ve read some of RowdyTexan2''s earlier remarks about Obama. She is a racist--and if we go by some of her remarks, she is old, bitter and a feminist too. Those who hate or won''t even consider Obama based on his skin color are not reachable--but like others have pointed out--one good thing is that they are old. One day, they will die out, like and the horrible virus of racism will eventually die out or go to a really low infection rate, also.

Good story & point made. Unfortunately this is true with a lot of closet or back door racists still remain among the Old Guard Democrats.

The Clintons themselves are and have played this card thoughout the campaign. They thrive on playing the polictics of personal destruction & made a fortune by doing it. The overall lying, dishonestly, cheating, & scheming you get from them at a bonus????

The exit polls can tell you a lot. Hillary is expecting a big win in WVA because of the large white population that are catholic in name only, senior, blue collar & low income. Its sort of an inconvenient truth. This has been exploited by the Clintons over & over again because it works. Sad to say, I''d like to proven I''m wrong but, I''m afraid, the WVA will only confirm this story.

The Penna Primary shaped up to be the same thing. The Clinton, Rendell, Ferarro, Spitzer & Hafer Crowd. It becomes very clear that the White Catholic segment are being exploited, along with the senior citizens, white blue collar & low income groups. The typically stalwarts of the Clinton supporters. Its tragically sad as most ot these voters show know better but are in denial & they know not what they do.

Together we now have an opportunity to work to change this sad scenario. Our Country, & The People deserve better than The Clinton Old Guard Racists Polictics. Yes we CAN do it!

You are right--all 3 mainstream candidates have sold out to illegal labor, outsourcing and to legal immigration insourcing geared to hurt our jobs. I will be voting for Obama--because Nader has no chance. ONe way or another, one of the mainstream candidates will hold office. When I was younger, I made protests votes, but in the past 6 or 7 elections, I have wanted my vote to help choose the next President, not simply voice my ire with the system. One helps to shape our destiny...the other is just giving a finger to the eventual destiny. Glad you are voting--my choice is the candidate most likely to be controlled and influenced by the public--the equation does not get any more basic than that, for me.

It would be very naive to think that racisism doesn''t exist because we all know it''s alive and kicking. To me racism is a disease because it can be spreaded and it is contagious and has and can eventually lead to death. I even know people who are so called religious, but on judgement day when you''re asked why were you racist what will your response be? The only answer will be an excuse. The good news is--is that racism is curable. The bad news is a lot of theses diseased idiots don''t want to be cured.

If a lot of Clinton voters are voting for because they don''t or will not vote for a black man then what is going to happen if they end up on the same ticket and she is the VP? Would you vote democratic or would vote racist?

What if you are voting for him just because you are black, and Obama is Black(part)?

What would you call that?

Posted by dumbshun at 09:11 AM : May 13, 2008

Voting for him just because he is black is preferential treatment--the reason it is NOT racist, are that the same people who vote for him, by and large say they will support Hillary if she is the eventual nominee--that means the choice is deeper to blacks than color--conversely many of those who vote for Hillary due to her being white, say they will either vote for McCain (another white) or not vote at all if Obama is elected. If they are voting based on color and not voting or not electing someone in their own party based on color--then that IS racist--because their votes are based not on making a first for a race in history--but on a negative--judging and reacting to someone negatively based on skin color or difference--that is racist--the point is the negativity, not simply the color choice.

It is a fact of life here in America. You are bound to run into someone who hates you without bothering to find out anything about you other than what they see on the surface. As a black woman I have been called names by people just passing by me when I was minding my own business. Sometimes even when I smiled at them, I would get called a dirty name or get a dirty look. I also know white people who have gotten the same reaction from black people. It''s disheartening, and always somewhat of a shock to feel pure hatred from a stranger that you bear no ill will towards. Sometimes it seems like we are losing the battle against discrimination, but look how far we have gotten. Women and minorities would have had virtually no chance of being in this position 50 years ago. There is no rolling back of this progress, in spite of the hate-riddled segment of the population that constantly strives to widen the racial divide. This genie is NOT going to be put back in the bottle, and eventually there WILL be a woman as President, and there WILL be a black President, and no amount of hate is going to derail that train. When racists try to bring you down, the best reaction is to look at your friends, laugh and give each other a hug! They can only rob you of your happiness if you let them. When they find out that they can''t, they slither away.

What You Reap is What You Sow -

Obama doesn''t mind his connections and friendships to some of the worst bigots in America - BOTH White and Black. KKK Byrd is on record saying he''d never serve alongside a Black American in time of war, and he never has.

And funnily enough, Obama, coward and race hypocrite he is, has never served either.

Not to mention his "Uncle Jere" - who, if he were white would be exactly like Byrd or David Duke.

But the guy blames "Racism" on his White granny or on "Reagan Democrats" - not the BLACK and WHITE Fascists who eagerly join his camp.

Stepin'' Fetchit Obama - totally unfit to serve, except maybe Janitor at the White House.

Why did his campaign circulate a "leaked" memo citing 4 "racially sensitive" comments by the Clintons, when they were NOTHING of the sort? "Fairy tale" in reference to Obama''s stance on the Iraq war, if people were paying attention.

I wouldn''t be surprised if CBSNews, MoveOn.Org, and even the Obama camp is making up a lot of this.

"Hanging ***** from a Tree" - oh, c''mon. When he has the Rev. Wright in his camp, Farrakhan too, with his ties to David Duke.

If it is true, then it should be denounced and deplored, unlike the initial pass Stepin'' gave his Uncle, and the BS he said about "Reagan Democrats" in his "healing" speech.

But do keep calling us Racists because we won''t dance to Stepin''s tune while you goosestep right alongside Jimmy Carter, KKK Byrd, and Hamas.

IS that why Obama let his campaign paint Hillary and Bill as racists? Or why he didn''''t immediately stand up and declare that they are NOT racist, and that talk was off limits?

Why did his campaign circulate a "leaked" memo citing 4 "racially sensitive" comments by the Clintons, when they were NOTHING of the sort? "Fairy tale" in reference to Obama''''s stance on the Iraq war, if people were paying attention.

Obama is a DIVIDER, and there''''s no white guilt here baby..you can''''t be a big hypocrite Obama.

American, lets rebuke this sort of behavior. We are one country and if we are the leader of the free world than we should be the first to rebuke this sort of nonsense. I pray we can move beyond this racist stuff. It does not benefit anyone and reflects badly.

Lets also pray that not one person who calls him/ her self a Christian would vote for a man who atttended a church where the pastor used the GD word in his house of worship. Obama didnt talk down on Wright til Wright got "exposed" by the media.

Obama''s wife said she wasnt proud of America untill her husband ran for office. Obama wouldnt wear patriotic pins... They both clearly hate what the nation stands for. Harsh or not - a vote for Obama is a slap in the face to those who died for this nation...

Had your nap today old man? MR. T has four words for anyone that dares challenge the Obama Shuffle, "I Pity The Fool".

The REAL RACISTS are the McVets and "singinricks" here - who''''d vote for a Black Nazi because he''''s Black - and has Fascist, Anti-America views. Or is willing to surrender to his namesake.

And by the way, Hamas DOES support Obama.

Posted by wrightsdeman at 09:30 AM : May 13, 2008

What is that supposed to mean? The last I checked, Hama is not a voting block in America. The KKK supports the GOP? Does that mean the GOP is the KKK. People outside of this country can support whomever they want, it means nothing. I know many Germans and other Europeans that hate Bush. It means nothing. Get a grip morons, and stop repeating *** that does not mean anything. You racist neo-cons are pathetic.

McVet, McVet, you hate mongering fool. You wouldn''t know a corrupt government regime if it hit you in the face. Suppose someone living in China or North Korea or Myanmar or Zimbabwe read one of your insane, inane, repetitive post with your comparisons of the government of America to the Nazis. They would think you had lost your mind (which you have). You''re just a big bag of wind. Go live in the mountains with the other survivilist nuts.
