O.J. Confessed Murder, Former Friend Says

A New Book, "How I Helped O.J. Get Away With Murder," Details Confession

  • Play CBS Video Video O.J. Insider Tells All

Thomas Riccio led O.J. Simpson to a hotel with his missing memorabilia, recorded the violent confrontation, testified for the prosecution, and now has a tell-all book. He speaks with Maggie Rodriguez.

  • Video O.J.'s Bail Doubled By Judge

O.J. Simpson's bail has been doubled by a Las Vegas judge after he was imprisoned for allegedly violating his parole by trying to relate a message to a former co-defendant. Jennifer Miller reports.

(AP)  A memorabilia dealer who profited from O.J. Simpson for many years is the latest former crony of the football star to write a tell-all book, this one alleging a groggy Simpson, high on marijuana, confessed to killing his ex-wife after he was acquitted.

Mike Gilbert also claims he helped his former friend wiggle out of the murder charges by suggesting how to bloat his hands so they would not fit the notorious bloody gloves.

Gilbert's book, "How I Helped O.J. Get Away With Murder: The Shocking Inside Story of Violence, Loyalty, Regret and Remorse" (Regnery Publishing, 232 pages, $27.95), is due in stores Monday. It was released to The Associated Press in advance.

He said Simpson had smoked pot, took a sleeping pill and was drinking beer when he confided at his Brentwood home weeks after his trial what happened the night of June 12, 1994. Simpson said he went to his ex-wife's condominium, but did not bring a knife with him. Simpson told him Nicole Brown Simpson had one in her hand when she opened the door.

In a soft mumble, Simpson told him: "If she hadn't opened that door with a knife in her hand ... she'd still be alive."

"Nothing more needed to be said," Gilbert writes. "O.J. had confessed to me. There's no doubt in my mind."

Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman were stabbed to death at the entrance to her condominium. The knife was never found.

Simpson's current lawyer Yale Galanter said none of Gilbert's claims are true and that Gilbert is "a delusional drug addict who needs money. He has fallen on very hard times. He is in trouble with the IRS (Internal Revenue Service)."

"I've talked to O.J. about it," said Galanter, who refused to allow Simpson to comment directly because of his upcoming robbery trial in Las Vegas. "This stuff not only didn't occur but it's not factually supported by the evidence."

The name calling and accusations on both sides showed that deep wounds persist.

In a phone interview, Gilbert called Galanter "an ambulance chaser and an enabler and denier for O.J. I know. I used to do the same thing. I understand the game."

He acknowledged he has problems with the Internal Revenue Service which he says were caused by Simpson but said, "I could take a drug test and pass it. I highly doubt that O.J. could."

Gilbert is the second sports memorabilia dealer to write a Simpson book this year. Thomas Riccio, who arranged a Las Vegas memorabilia sale that led to Simpson's armed robbery arrest, penned "Busted" last month.

Simpson himself participated in the controversial book, "If I Did It," which he claimed was not a confession. It was withdrawn by the publisher and eventually released last year by the Goldman family to help satisfy a $33.5 million wrongful death judgment in civil lawsuit after Simpson was acquitted of murder charges in a criminal trial.

Gilbert said he continued to represent Simpson for another decade after the alleged confession, hawking items with his autograph, hiding the profits and helping Simpson shield his possessions so they could not be seized by the Goldman family.

Gilbert also claims that he counseled the jailed Simpson during his murder trial to stop taking his arthritis medicine so his hands would swell up and not fit the bloody gloves in court. He offers no proof Simpson followed his advice or that he was taking any medicine, but the drama that played out in court when the gloves did not fit was central to Simpson's defense.

This is getting so old . . . the St. Louis, Chicago, and New York cops murder people everyday. Drew Petersen murder his wife right in his house. Now, ex-Chicago cop Petersen is retired with a $70,000 pension.

This Simpson stuff is getting so old.

I personally thought he did it from the first, but reserved judgement for the trial. While watching the trial i was still convinced he did it but found that the prosecutor was his best defense. I think he bought her and her sleeping with his attorney didn''t help. The point now is he was found innocent and guilty or not he cannot be tried again. If i ghad been on the jury i would have voted him innocent based on the evidence given. The prosecutor did a very poor job but i am sure she retired rich from it.

It''s amazing how gullible you folks are. If this guy knew that OJ did it, he would have told long ago and cashed in like everybody else did! You are falling for it because you hate OJ. If he did it and got away with it, then blame the ineptness of the prosecutors who also got rich over it!!! This *** is old. GET OVER IT and GET A LIFE!!!

Don''t you love how the media uses the term FORMER friend? I bet OJ don''t forgive and embrace him like McCain did to King George after he pulled the black baby story in 2000.

Mike Gilbert MIGHT be telling the truth about this---only he and O.J. know for sure. But, proving it---unless he has witnesses or a tape-recording---is going to be next to impossible! And with his personal reputation, well---that''s not going to help his case!

I wonder if he hasn''t opened himself up to ''conspiracy to obstruct justice after-the-fact'' charges of some type?! By claiming to have instructed him in how to pass the ''glove test''! He may regret his attempt at this money-making book! I wouldn''t buy it!

Nobody needs to buy this guys book to know the obvious, that O.J. killed Nicole and Ron! In my view O.J. admitted his guilt with that slow Bronco Jeep ride down the Blvd. when he was threatening to commit suicide with that gun to his head! Now wait, stop for a minute, why would O.J. do that? O.J. was dating someone else, had moved on and was not that close to Nicole for a suicide response of that nature! That single event, threatening suicide to end his life was not compatible with the situation, it was compatible with I messed up big time and might as well end it all!

This is old news, and nothing more than Sunday Morning filler. I guess the news sources couldn''t find anything more important to bring to the table. That''s the problem with news in this day and age; there are no real investigative reports that are unbiased and willing to take the time and effort to get a real news story on their own. Even more alarming is the fact that the intelligent informed citizen knows that all of the corporate news is funneled and canned from government controlled news sources not unlike the old Tass was in Russia. The free press in the United States has been crushed like a bug on a windshield of a car going 60 miles an hour. Even the foreign news sources are becoming harder and harder to depend on, because of counterintelligence operations within the Pentagon. Yet, the average American citizen believes everything he reads, hears on the radio, and watches on the TV News at 6 and 10.

Johnny Cochran must have been involved in the fraudulent glove episode also. Tell us about that Gilbert. This stunt could not have occurred without Cochran''approval. He knew the glove would not fit because of the swollen hands. Otherwise, he would not have done it.

Wealthy famous men who are risen from humble beginnings, often believe they need beautiful ''trophy'' wives on their arm as proof of their value for their gaping admirers.

There is a real psycohlogical danger in living one''s life for audience approval. I imagine O.J. had real
and passionate feelings for Nicole. Assuming this account is accurate,(which it may not be) when Nicole DID open that door with a knife in her and in the company of a younger man, I can understand why O.J. went white heat blind with rage. He likely felt she was treating him like some vermin to be disposed of.

For an excessively proud man like O.J. that would likely be too much insult for his psyche to absorb all at once. I believe he came to a sudden reality that night and he could not accept it. This may be an oversimplification of the incident but it explains to me why it happened on that night the way it did.

Just another fool who thought he was God. Got himself a trophy wife who was a ***. They made each other miserable which is what they both deserved.

She didn''t deserve to die for it, and now he''s branded a murderer. Justice has been served, right or wrong.

Now he got involved with thieves and they''ll all lie about it and make money off of it. Anybody who buys their stupid books...a fool and his money are quickly parted.

He who CHOOSES to associate with freakoids and crooks usually IS a freakoid and crook.

Yes OJ is looking for the Killers about as hard as Bush is looking for Bin Ladin.

Give it up people, He has been found innocent and that is that. He should write a new book titled, "I didn''t commit the murders, But I was there to see them executed." As for being an inspiration, yes he is for those with money and want to commit murder and get away with it!

Some figured all that out in 1995. The gloves trick was rather obvious; and if I with my learning disability could figure that out, why the heck couldn''t the prosecution, who was (and likely still is) making oodles of money from their happy little show?

Oh good heavens! To equate OJ and Obama is such nonsense it hardly bears scrutiny. To call that a bit of a stretch is the understatement of the year!

OJ if he did this horrid double murder, will likely rot in you know where for eternity if he is as totally unrepentant as he appears. And if so, I hope Old Man Satan has an especially hot pitchfork to prod him in his rearend forever and ever. Amen.

Why does the OJ story keep coming up ? It does not matter if he murdered them or not. He has been found innocent in a court of law. He can not have another trial. The verdict was innocent.

I am sure there are people who receive a verdict of innocent who are not just as people who receive the verdict of guilty who are not.

Our system of justice tries, but is not always perfect. We can not change it. Let it be.

==============================================

I had to come back to you roger_inkart, just to tell you where I am coming from.

There is nothing this family can do. They "lost" in criminal court, they won in civil court. They are well aware of how murdered their loved one. Thats it.

What do you want for this family ? A life of hate and revenge ? Revenge is not something you can turn on and off like a switch. It usually consumes the person. It is time for this family to be able to move on. They are "alive" and need to live the life they have left. There is nothing more other then trying to collect the money due them that they can do.

I hate to see them living the rest of their lives on something they can not change. It will not bring back the love one they lost. It will only cause them more pain.

If you feel it would not be a waste of your life to be obsessed over some thing you can not change then so be it.

You''ll see alot more of these kinds of ''exposes'' as November approaches. Bringing back into the public consciousness the fundamental ''unreliability'' of the black male.

Like the Michael Jackson trial in ''04: a black, probably gay, member of the Hollywierd establishment has to be brought to trial for ''raping'' America''s children. Just in time to hear GW Bush (or McCain, in this case) proclaim his willingness to sign a constitutional amendment making gay marriage illegal. Bush didn''t need to ''sell'' his amendment: Jackson did it for him in the popular press. Jackson was charged with 10 counts of child-rape during the ''04 election cycle: 24-7 celebrity coverage of the trial did the rest. Later, after Bush had won (and quietly disavowed his ''gay marriage'' amendment), Michael Jackson was finally brought to trial: and promptly (after 32 hours of jury deliberation), the charges were dropped: ALL 10 OF THEM!!! NONE of them were worth bringing to the jury (of course, they were worth something to GW Bush, and THAT was the point).

If Obama is the Dem candidate, expect OJ, Jackson 24-7. Expect black males to be so denigrated by ''legitimate'' prosecutions that you''ll wonder if Ossama bin Laden himself isn''t black. Expect Satan himself to be a black male by November.

Yeah, I''ve noticed that. However, I''m comforted that if OJ were tried by an election he would have been overwhealmingly convicted. Obaka locking up the dem nomination is a dream come true... because he''s going to lose in a landslide. Anyone that can''t see that coming would likely be dumb enought to think OJ is innocent.

Hey, this has nothing to do with politics! Trying to tie OJ Simpson to Barack Obama because Simpson is black and Obama is bi-racial just shows how ignorant some people are. Focus on the subject at hand; don''t try to change it into something it is not! I plan to vote for Obama but I don''t believe Simpson is innocent of the murder of his wife. Try some critical thinking for a change! You are really brain washed!
