"Brother, I'm Dying"
by Edwidge Danticat

(CBS)  Since 9/11 there have been a lot of changes in how the United States deals with immigrants. One of the biggest is the explosive growth of a system of immigrant detention centers that few Americans know anything about.

Immigrants who come into the country illegally, or refugees who apply for political asylum, often go into detention, some for many months. Before 9/11, about 100,000 detainees went though the system each year. Today, with stricter immigration rules, that number has tripled to more than 300,000.

The surge appears to have overwhelmed the medical care provided to the immigrants.

Now, a Washington Post investigation, joined by 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley, has found evidence that immigrants are suffering from neglect and some don't survive detention in America.

In 2004, United Nations troops were fighting militant gangs in the streets of Haiti. Eighty-one-year-old Reverend Joseph Dantica, a Baptist minister, saw his church ransacked during the unrest, so he fled to the United States and asked for political asylum. His niece, Edwidge Danticat (her last name is spelled differently than her uncle's) says he was taken straight to a U.S. immigration detention center.

"He was essentially arrested?" Pelley asks.

"Yes. I consider it an arrest," Danticat says. "Because …he had to ask for special relief for him not to be handcuffed. And they did allow him that, but told him that if he ran, they would shoot him."

Rev. Dantica raised Edwidge in Haiti; she moved to the U.S. at the age of 12 and grew up to become a prize-winning author. Danticat's recent book, "Brother, I'm Dying," recounts her uncle's ordeal.

She was waiting for him in Miami.

Asked what she was thinking when she heard her uncle had been detained, Danticat tells Pelley, "Well, I was horrified. Eighty one years old and, after the ordeal that he had been through in Haiti, I worried about his ability to handle that."

Records show that two days later, during an asylum hearing, he became violently ill and collapsed. A detention center physician's assistant failed to recognize that Dantica was in serious trouble.

"Help me understand from the records that you've seen precisely what the medic said about your uncle and his condition," Pelley asks.

"It appears that he said, 'I think he's faking,' or something to that effect," Danticat says.

It took four hours to get Rev. Dantica to an outside hospital. His family wasn't allowed to see him. In a day and a half, Rev. Dantica was dead. The medical examiner said it was pancreatitis.

Asked what she was thinking in that moment, Danticat says, "Just a series of things.”

Crying, she continues, "Of course, you know, a great deal of sadness because he died so alone."

"He died without his family," Pelley remarks.

"Yeah. And after being treated like an animal," Danticat says. "Someone who was just trying to escape horrible things, who was so old and sick. Just had to die that way."

But in one sense, Rev. Dantica was not alone: he's among hundreds of sick or dying detainees inside 22 detention centers, plus some 350 state and local jails. The federal lock-ups range from a former warehouse in New Jersey that houses 325 people, to a desert facility near the Mexican border.

The centers are run by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known by its initials "ICE."

Inside the detention centers, medical care is provided by another federal agency, the Division of Immigration Health Services, or DIHS. Reporters Dana Priest and Amy Goldstein of The Washington Post have been investigating DIHS.

"This is not just some deaths or just some sick people anecdotally. If you take them all together, they show poor medical judgments, faulty administrative practices, sloppy paperwork, lost medical records and very dangerous staffing levels," Priest explains.

Priest, who contributes to 60 Minutes, and Goldstein have obtained thousands of internal DIHS documents. They include investigations, e-mails, autopsy reports and complaints.

What sort of a picture did the documents paint of how DIHS is working?

"They show a bureaucracy that offers many immigrants no care or slow care or poor care," Priest says. "And they also show that the employees inside are panicked about this."

I simply do not care. If you are here illegally, tough. You are not entitled to John Hopkins medical care. You take your chances, if you live great, if you don''t, oh well. Taxpayers owe nothing to these individuals, nothing.

DO THEY PUT ANY OF THE CUBANS THAT LAND HERE IN DETENTION?

TO ME IT IS VERY UNFAIR WITH ALL THIS HULLABALOO ABOUT ILLEGAL MEXICANS WHEN THEY ARE SUCH HARD WORKERS AND DO WORK THAT OUR CITIZENS WON''T DO. I CONSTANTLY HEAR FROM CLIENTS THEIR STORIES OF WHAT VALUE THEIR MEXICAN WORKERS ARE.

AND THEN I HEAR STORIES OF HOW THE CUBANS NOT ONLY GET TO STAY BY JUST LANDING HERE BUT GET A $10,000 CHECK? A CLIENT TOLD ME HE FELT ASHAMED THAT HIS GRANPARENTS GOT HERE FROM CUBA IN THEIR 60''S AND STARTED COLLECTION SOCIAL SECURITY????? THEY DO NOT HAVE THINGS ANYWHERE NEAR AS BAD AS THE HAITIANS OR EVEN THE MEXICANS IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY.

I think its a joke to try to portray a sob story with the main character being an illegal immigrant. So what are you saying, I, a legal citizen who plays by the rules and have broken no laws, should pay more taxes to make the government agency better so an illegal immigrant can get great medical care?!? What a joke.

What are we coming to? The key word here is ILLEGAL. Yes we have welcomed the entire world for decades, but it is by far out of control. I have a good friend from Vietnam (That is now an American Citizen)that says it best. You have two buses, if you have a card, you go to work on this bus, if you don''t.........you board this bus to go to a port of debarkation to go back to where you came from. We wonder why our taxes are high and our lawyers are plentiful!

I''m tired of people coming to this country and complaining of ill treatment when we have millions of native born going without medical insurance, decent housing, proper nutrition and clothing. Why do we support other countries and even give social security benifets to aliens that have never even contributed to our SS system?

Wrong way totally! We need to stop the Cuban, Mexicans, Asians, and frankly anyone who is not an American from gaining access to the United States. My country is not available any longer for immigration - we need to assure that the people of the United States are no longer subjected to this alien invasion. Can we count on George Bush to do the right thing? Of course not! We can''t count on George Bush to do anything except that which would do harm to the country. Immigration is over - we need mass deportation now.

I watched with great interest your story about the detainee and his cancer (Castaneda) I have been told...and I know not the truth...that prisoners who need an organ transplant get one BEFORE people on the waiting list who have been waiting for years. As a person on the kidney transplant list, I am asking you to report whether this is true. WHY would a prisoner get an organ ahead of law-abiding, hardworking, tax-paying citizens!!!!!!!!!!!! This is absurd. Is it true? It certainly would be a flipside to the story you reported tonight.

The guards must have gotten their training at US prisons. The health care is worse than what the immigrants get. In fact, a few years ago, the Feds put some immigrants in New Hampshire, and then took them back because the health care was so horrible. The attitude was the same: all prisoners are faking illnesses. One prisoner had brain cancer and the tumor traveled to the spinal cord; he wasn''t treated. He is now paralyzed. Oh, well.

How dare the blood-sucking lawyer seek restitution for illegal-Criminals? Too many children, women, seniors, and families in America have no healthcare at all, and you want us to foot the bill. This is totally outrageous. How can someone who enters this country illegally, and now his family is able to sue the us government because he died here in a detention center? I, born and raised here, gainfully employed and I can''t even get a food stamp, but these illegals can get everything. This is so disgusting. What makes it even worse, they don''t even speak the language and want someone to give them something.

The Detention in America story really made my red white and blue blood BOIL! We need to detain them and ship them back where they came from! The USA owes them nothing and neither do we owe the lawyers trying to make a buck on the "poor unfortunate illegal immigrants". What goes around comes around. Lets take care of our own first!

While I can sympathize with illegals who are trying to build a better life, I find it appalling that this story is getting such exposure when our veterans (who are giving their all to maintain the very things these people are seeking) are not receiving the medical care they desperately need. Many of our veterans are deeply affected mentally and emotionally by what they go through on the battlefield, and yet they are left to wander on the streets with no home and no help. Those are the people who need our government''s help -- without them, there would be no government!

It is unfortunate that people die waiting on medical aid in the greatest country in the world, however the issue is about illegal immigration. I am legal immigrant with a advanced education paying taxes, social security and medicare for 8 years in this country. So far, i do not even have a permanent residency forget citizenship. Such is the shape of things on the legal immigration side in this country. EVEN I DONT FEEL BAD FOR WHAT THE DIHS DID TO THOSE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. They tried the best they can, i dont want my tax money wasted on them. FIX LEGAL IMMIGRATION FIRST then take care of ILLEGALS!!

Welcome to the nursing shortage & shortage of healthcare workers period! We need to take care of our own American citizens first; & this is from a nurse who has worked double shifts at a nursing home taking care of illegal aliens who qualified for medical assistance, got their surgeries & returned to their own countries....& we have how many millions who can''t get health insurance. Sorry, we need to take care of our own citizens first; there should be a benefit to being American Citizen!

This story was biased. There is a health care crisis in this country. Citizens have similiar problems to those cited by victims of the detention system. The story failed to address this. I believe the real issue is a bloated, nebulous Federal Governemnt. You cannot be the land of the free, grant political asylum and then throw ''applicants'' in prison without any appeal system. The powers, State, Federal, etc. can hand down all the sweeping policy regulations they want, but if the man power and funds aren''t available to those working in the trenches, then who is to blame and who''s responsible?

Its time the country stopped giving free handouts to illegals. And to the people who think the illegal mexicans are just doing the jobs that Americans don''t want to do: YOU better wake up. I inspect commercial jobsites for Osha compliance. The mexicans are doing brick/block work, framing, roofing, drywall, siding and excavating, just to name a few. Do these sound like jobs we don''t want to do? This country is going broke trying to foot the bill for all these illegals. It''s time to stop it. Send them back to where they came from.

The only thing the US owes these criminals is a one way ticket back to were ever they came from. In a country were bonified citizens go without medical care, there is no reason to allow these people to stay long enough to need anything. If congress wants to do something, the best thing they could do is pass laws that prevent this criminals from profiting from their crime of invading out country.

I would never say don''t give someone that is in grave state of illness, such as heart attack or car wreck, but for illegals from any country to come here to get medical care is wrong, why should American tax payers pay for their medical care? We have American citizens that I for one would rather my tax dollars go to.. And for anyone of the "clients" saying they need illegals to work, it''s because they are CHEAP... nothing more. Illeagl''s come here to have babies to get free medical, then anchor''s get free welfare, housing education, and more medical care... who is paying for this AMERICAN TAX payers. If "clients" want cheap illegal labor, let them give them houseing, food, education, healthcare, at their expence not mine. If anyone comes to this country because they are afraid for their lives due to war.. welcome, do it legal, but for those that come here to just live off the American Tax payers, get the heck out, you are not welcomed.

BFD! I''m Native American, and we get treated the same. If we''re seriously ill, it''s dismissed. If we desperately need medical attention, we''re stabilized and told everything''s fine. Stop worrying about those *** illegals and own up to promises that were made to the people here. I am SOOOOO upset about these people! Just kidding! The immigrants who end up in these detention centers do so because they either enter the country illegally, commit a crime after they enter, or have a criminal record from the country they come from! The biggest part of this story was about an ILLEGAL immigrant who had a DRUG CONVICTION who happen to have cancer. If an AMERICAN CITIZEN with no health insurance gets cancer...guess what? They are going to get sub-par care if any and probably die a horrible death! We don''t owe non-citizens and illegals anything especially when citizens could suffer the same or worse fate! Not to mention the illegal with cancer got to live high on the hog in our country, illegally, without having to pay taxes, for decades, while he was here...sounds like he took enough advantage of us already!

If hey are here illegally, they have no rights. Round them up and march them back across the border. The "no match" federal regulation needs to be enforced immediately and companies hiring illegals should be fined to the maximum. Illegals have overburdened our education, social service, health care, and penal systems. Send them back and their lawyers with them.

Do a story and continue to do stories on how Americans are not getting health care. Why is it so "cool" to help others when we cannot ,or will not, take are of our own. Lets concentrate on Americans for a change. We have seniors who cannot afford medicine , they built this country , gave their blood , and we throw them away . Wake up.

They deserve nothing ! So what if they die in detention ? They are crimminals ! Consider this 1 out of every 3 aliens end up in jail. This is their 2 offense. The first was breaking the law entering this country. Then it our responsiblity to care for them? Please people Wake the Hell up ! Why is it as they move into your community and stand on the street corner loking for work , get it then more move in. Then you need to build new schools to educate and provide welfare , foodstamps and tax credits to people who have NEVER paid 1 dime into the system. One day you people will wake up and find all of our personal freedoms gone and in the hands of those who invaded our once great Nation.

60 Minutes unwittingly showed America what our socialized health care system would look like if the Democrats get their way. Bravo!

I also loved the American flag portrayed as prison bars. That must be why everyone is trying to get in. Next time just burn an American flag. Andy Roonie could light it.

60 minutes is going to lose a long time watcher if they broadcast too many of these stories. I was fuming as I watched that story. I do not feel I need to provide medical care to every one that comes to the U.S. illegally. I absolutely am nauseated by the blood sucking lawyers in that story. All they are interested in is suing deep pockets. They make me ill. If you have a medical problem, go to health care providers in your country. It is NEVER wise to immigrate illegally in you 80''s. Very, Very unwise. I am a nurse who is working on my straight 18th day because it is difficult to obtain enough nurses to take care of all the problems currently in the U.S. THERE IS A HEALTHCARE SHORTAGE that is only going to get worse. Wake up 60 minutes. If you want to make me cry, show me some of those beautiful young soldiers in Iraq or Afganistan. That will make me cry. That illegal immigrants don''t get top notch wonderful care will not make me cry. It makes me mad that there only intent is to sue, sue, sue.

I was held in the Blount County Jail located in Maryville, TN. for a period of 10 wks., the entire time I was there, they knew that I had HIV, I brought my medication with me, but they wouldn''t give it to me, they claimed that they would not pay for the medications that I needed, they took blood test, but not the required ones as my Dr asked for then hid the results from me, because when I entered I had less than 50 copies of the virus, and by the time they got done stringing me along, I had 100,000 copies of the virus which changed my diagnosis from HIV to AIDS, btw, I know everyone who reads this wants to know why I was in Jail, the answer is, Overpayment of food stamps which was used to feed my children and homeless kids that I had taken in off the street... If your Interested in the full details of my treatment during those 10 wks, E-Mail me at ZERAMBOT@MSN.COM

I am absolutely appalled at the coverage of the treatment of illegal aliens in detention in this country. First of all they are ILLEGAL, meaning they broke the law to get here in the first place. There are thousands, maybe millions, of US citizens and LEGAL residents who don''t get extensive health care at taxpayer expense and this especially includes members of our military services and veterans. STOP whining about conditions of criminals and take care of our own. We don''t need to keep these people in detention for months or years and feed and shelter them and provide free medical care. Put them on the first boat back to wherever they came from. Just try to imagine if a US citizen went to one of their countries illegally and expected free medical care and room and board. They would either rot in jail or be expelled immediately. Let''s get real about illegal immigration and put a stop to it permanently. They broke the law coming here now they want the law to make them rich. What a load of ***!

These people deserve NOTHING from us. Most of our economic problems we have now, both locally and nationally are from the millions of illegals that have come here and receiving government assistance of some type. I hope our government does something about this before our citizens decide enough is enough and do something about it themselves.

I agree with everyone else that says that 60 minutes should be ashamed of themselves for running a story like this. This is totally ridiculous, big deal, they had to wait 4 hours to see a doctor. People that were born here wait hours in the emergency room every day. You come here illegally, you are entitled to NOTHING! You should not be here in the first place. The alternative is to set up detention centers at airports ,and as soon as you have enough to fill up an airplane ,board them and ship them home!!

What do you think American citizens WITH insurance coverage are going through? They can''t even get treatments needed & die because the insurance co. won''t cover treatment needed! Then, there''s the thousands of people waiting for SS disability who die before a decision is made.
And you want us to boo-hoo about illegals? True, it''s an unfortunate thing, but we need to take care of our own first!

what a joke- right in the middle of the story, they tell about an illegal immigrant who died while awaiting deportation.. now the government is being sued??!- thats what i am saying.. maybe its a good thing these are rought detention centers.. and why would we (the united states) owe an immigrant health care anyway?? we do not owe them jack, other than a kick in the "rear" out.. we have enough people as it is.. we do not need to take on anymore... i dont care what skin color, or from what area- its across the board.. people say illegal immigrants do job americans do not want to do.. true.. at this time.. but.. then you turn around and see stories about food (soup) lines in states like ohio.. well... if we stopped allowing illegal immigrants to work in this country (its a bad political move-- and business do not like that idea)-- put a limit (time limit for assistance) on welfare and unemployment.. i imagine quite a few of those folks would get out of the food line, relocate if necessary, and do the jobs illegals are doing now.. sorry if its not a glamorous job, but if it puts food on the table.. get to it!! no more hand-outs to illegals or americans.. there are jobs there.. lets keep them for americans.. no matter what type they are--

These people deserve NOTHING from us. Most of our economic problems we have now, both locally and nationally are from the millions of illegals that have come here and receiving government assistance of some type. I hope our government does something about this before our citizens decide enough is enough and do something about it themselves.

Once again Scott Pelley and the 60 Minutes liberal media crying crocdile tears for the illegal immigrant who should not be here in the first place. All on the honest tax payer''s dime. What about the 43 million Americans without health insurance. Americans are the ones who are broke tired and hungry because free loading immgrants stealing their way into our country. America is going down the tubes one lawsuit at a time. All being driven by each hippie liberal lawyer out betraying America.
