(CBS/AP)  The leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, was arrested in the northern city of Mosul, the Iraqi Defense Ministry spokesman said Thursday.

Spokesman Mohammed al-Askari said the arrest of al-Masri, also known as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, was confirmed to him by the Iraqi commander of the province. There was no immediate confirmation or comment from U.S. forces on the arrest.

The U.S. military in Baghdad says it is aware of the reported arrest, but has no "operational reports" and is looking into it, reports CBS News correspondent Cami McCormick.

Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf said that Mosul police "arrested one of al Qaeda's leaders at midnight and during the primary investigations he admitted that he is Abu Hamza Al-Muhajir."

News of the arrest was also reported by Iraqi state television and Arab satellite TV stations.

The state channel, Iraqiya, said that Minister of Interior Jawad al-Bolani would reward Mosul police for the capture.

If confirmed, the arrest would represent a major blow to al Qaeda in Iraq, which has been on the run for the past year following a shift in alliances by Sunni tribesmen in western Anbar province, and elsewhere, and an influx of thousands of U.S. troops.

The U.S. military considers the organization its number one enemy in Iraq.

"The commander of Ninevah military operations informed me that Iraqi troops captured Abu Hamza al-Muhajir the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq," al-Askari told The Associated Press by telephone.

He did not have any further details nor did he say when the al Qaeda leader was arrested. According to unconfirmed reports he was caught Thursday evening in the Tayran area in central Mosul, 225 miles northwest of Baghdad.

Mosul is currently a major battleground for U.S. forces and al Qaeda.

Al-Masri, an Egyptian militant, took over al Qaeda in Iraq after Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed June 7, 2006 in a U.S. airstrike northeast of Baghdad.

The Islamic State of Iraq, an umbrella organization that includes al Qaeda in Iraq, last year announced an "Islamic Cabinet" for Iraq and named al-Masri as "minister of war."

U.S. officials said al-Masri joined an extremist group led by al Qaeda's No.2 official in 1982. He joined al Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan in 1999 and trained as a car bombing expert before traveling to Iraq after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

According to associates in Afghanistan, al-Masri has been involved in Islamic extremist movements since 1982, when he joined Islamic Jihad, a terror group led by Ayman al-Zawahri, who became bin Laden's chief deputy.

Al-Masri fought with Muslim rebels against the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s and later ran al Qaeda training camps there.

In other developments:

  • A committee of Shiite politicians on Thursday sought ways to disarm extremists in Baghdad's Sadr City in an effort to stop intense fighting in the slum, even as the U.S. military predicted that an operation to wall off part of the district would be completed within two weeks.

  • A Kuwaiti who had been imprisoned in Guantanamo for more than 3 1/2 years carried out a recent suicide attack in Iraq, the U.S. military said Wednesday. Abdullah Saleh al-Ajmi took part in one of three suicide bomb attacks last month in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, said U.S. Navy Cmdr. Scott Rye, a military spokesman.

"There was no immediate confirmation or comment from U.S. forces."

Doesn''t that statement imply that the Iraqis did this all by themselves?
How about an exit stradegy of for every terrorist the Iraqis capture or kill by themselves (without US help)1000 US troops come home. If the Iraqi people want the US out of thier country, simply start turning in the terrorists to the Govt'' and the US will be out of there before they can shout "Death to America"

rharrin1, why don''t you go over and plant a big wet kiss on the terrorist''s lips and tell them how fond you are of their world wide terrorist philosophy. I''m sure you can get real estate cheap there and you can sit around and talk about your share of the oil kickback and swap stories of your kids growing up together and maybe you can even go to mosque together. I''m sorry, I guess you didn''t realize that if you weren''t Muslim that you were an infidel and by jihadist theory, you are nothing and should be killed. Maybe you can introduce your wife/girlfriend, daughters to them and see them degraded, masked from head to toe, and kept out of education. I''m sure your women would appreciate that gesture on your part since you believe Bush and US are the bad guys.

cbsjerks2008,,,, Start with the basics & understand terrorism, the conditions that creat it, and who the threats are in the 1st place.

Just calling it a War on Evil, or a War on Terror in the 1st place turned criminals into soldiers with a mission.

Al Queda is now in more safe countries than before, & Pakistan is the immediate Terrorist Nuclear Threat far more than Iran

Al Quaeda was not in Iraq before the invasion. They were kept out by Saddam. Once the Americans threw out Saddam they came in from Syria and (possibly) Iran. The reason that they have strengthened in Iraq is because the War has made recruitment vastly easier for them due to the destruction of the country. I certainly dislike terrorists every bit as much as any GOPig (as you will find most liberals are if you actually ever listened to us), but the incontravertable evidence is the Al Quaeda has grown in Iraq since the invasion. This is also the first sign that the Iraqis might be ready to take over for themselves.

Note also that both Al Masri and Bin Laden came to the forefront of Islamic extremism during the Russian occupation of Afghanistan where they fought for the Muhajadeen. One of the Muhajadeen''s most generous supporters - the good ole USA through Raygun''s policies against the USSR.

If that''s the best you can come back with. Normally don''t engage in personal chit chat, just tired of hearing the same old "it''s Bush''s fault" or that this was about oil. You seriously need to educate yourself on how long America has been target''s of terrorism by Middle Eastern elements. It was long, long before either Bush was in office. In fact it was Jimmy "the bean counter" Carter who was in office during the Iranian hostage crisis. I''ve spent 28 1/2 years defending our country, you might try to put on a uniform (any worthwhile uniform) for your community and pick up a gun and do the same. It would be an educational experience for you and you might even grow a set, instead of spewing uneducated biased political rhetoric.

j-whitman, since when did it become your job to justify the actions of terrorists? What you are unable to comprehend is that there is no justification for Al Qaed''s agenda and the attrocities they commit! Wake up and get on the right side of this fight, stop midigating and justifying the attrocities of the nemy because you hate your fellow American political rivals, put your stance in perspective for a change, wake up!

Don''t you remember seeing this picture some 3-4 months ago of another guy being captured? did he escape before being recaptured again? Or maybe they are confused at what picture they may post in order to make believe they are working hard in Iraq...
