This Gold Star Mom A "Black Sheep"

Peggy Buryj Wants Truth About Friendly Fire Death Of Her Son In Iraq; He Was Shot In Back

  • Photo Essay Pat Tillman

A look at the former NFL player who died fighting as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan.

(CBS)  Pat Tillman was an NFL star who left behind his football career to fight for his country. When he was killed in battle in Afghanistan in 2004, his family was told he died defending his fellow soldiers.

Much later, they learned he was actually shot in a case of friendly fire.

On 60 Minutes Sunday night, Tillman's mother, Mary Tillman, said that, on the day Pat died, "He was screaming, 'Cease fire.' He was screaming his name. You know, 'I'm Pat Tillman.' "

Pat Tillman's death resulted in a national outpouring of grief. Tributes were paid to his heroic life and his heroic death. But, none of the Army's versions of how he died was true.

And Mary Tillman isn't alone in frustration.

Just two weeks after Pat Tillman lost his life, Army Specialist Jesse Buryj was killed in Iraq.

His mother, Peggy Buryj, was told he died in a humvee accident, protecting his unit as it came under attack.

But months later, Peggy learned her son had been shot in the back.

And the story kept changing.

"He believed in honor, integrity, loyalty, duty," Peggy says. "Where was their loyalty to him, when they weren't telling his parents and his wife what happened to him?"

The final jolt came with the official autopsy report, as Peggy read the words "friendly fire."

"It was like losing him all over again, burying him all over again," she remembers.

Like Mary Tillman, Peggy Buryj is on a mission to find the truth.

From her Canton, Ohio home Monday -- four years to the day her son was killed, Peggy told Early Show co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez she has "No idea" why the Army "had to lie. There was no good reason in my mind. They should have told the truth from the very beginning. They just made it worse."

On "60 Minutes, Mary Tillman said, "When you're lied to, your brain goes all over the map, and things that aren't really true can appear to be true."

She said later, "This isn't about us, it's about what they've done to the public. This is a public deception."

Peggy says she agrees, and, "What's in your mind is worse than what the truth will ever be. In the wee hours of the morning, your mind goes places you do not want it to go."

Mary Tillman said, at one point, things got so crazy, she actually wondered if her son had been murdered.

Did that ever cross Peggy's mind?

"Oh, yes. (I thought) 'Did they hate him? Did they do it on purpose?' Your mind goes a million different directions when you don't have the truth."

Peggy says the truth may never be known about Jesse's death: "I don't think there is any evidence. They threw away the bullet. There's no proving who shot my son now. There's no proving it. The evidence is gone.

"I would love somebody to take responsibility for my son's death. But I don't think that's ever going to happen, never."

Peggy says she's "a Gold Star mom's worst nightmare," explaining that, "When you're a military family, the idea is that you have complete faith in your leaders and, God forbid, when you lose a son, everything will be handled properly. And I am the painful reminder to them that the military can lie. I think, then, it's hard for them (Gold Star moms) to realize that my story is not like their story. I'm not waving the flag higher and faster, and I'm not going to try to justify the war because my son died in it. This is not about politics and it's not about patriotism. This is -- for me -- just about getting the truth.

"When you hold onto the honor, the loyalty, the dignity, and all that for me has been shattered, so how can I be in with a bunch of gold star families when I'm the black sheep because everything was shattered?"

Peggy says President Bush promised her in 2004 that he'd seek answyersd about Jesse's death, but they've never come, even though he told her, "Sometimes it just takes a phone call from the president."

She showed Early Show cameras Jesee's purple heart, but said, "This is last thing my son gave to me, the last physical thing my son gave to me, but I really don't know (how I feel about it) because they lied so much. My son's blood was not spilt because of the enemy. And I really don't know if he deserved it. And I really don't take comfort with it, because of so many lies surrounding it."

What will to mark today's grim anniversary?

"Me and my daughter, we're going go to the cemetery and visit Jesse. Take him some flowers. Go remember Jess."

The Bush Administration telling lies that cause death for personal profit and power, is the "rule" not the "exception," so this story really contains no "news" just the same old story of a government run by the Cowardly Cowboy and his crew of crooked cronies!

My prayers go out to these Gold Star Mothers. The lack of accountability in the deaths of these two men is totally unacceptable. However, I do not see it as a means to completely condemn the military as a whole. Seems to me there are some officers that are trying to save face (and their careers) by distorting the truth in their reporting of these incidents.

Here are TWO moms whose sons have been killed by "friendly fire".

"Friendly fire" is a fact of war and has been since the very first war was fought (probably started by a great ancestor of the Bush family!). What people fail to realize is how often it happens and how much the government tries to "cover it up"! If the real truth were ever known, NO ONE would join the military!

SIG HEIL, BUSH!!!!

LIES. This is what defines bush, his administration, and the GOP. LIARS. LIARS. LIARS. They have no honor. I was in the Army for the 1st gulf war, and as a young officer, my peers and I felt we''d rather die than betray our trust to ANYONE. Including the enemy. You define yourself and your country NOT by how you respond to your enemy, but how you morally define your country and yourself. just because they torture doesn''t make it right for us to do so. HOW MANY OTHER FAMILIES WERE LIED TO IN ORDER TO CONTROL PUBLIC OPINION ABOUT THIS AWFUL WAR.

Excellent posts. The Bush administration has lost any and all credibility with the public. They have been caught lying so often, even when they didn''t need to, that I wouldn''t believe them I they told me the sky was blue. They must have a real self-esteem problem because they try and cover up every mistake with a lie and then accuse those who call them on it unpatriotic. The sooner they are gone the better. Bush thinks history will vindicate him in 50 years. Just another of his english problems. The word is vilify.

Several of my colleagues and friends, some former and some current Army and Marine soldiers, said that if the public truly knew about the actual amount of "friendly fire" incidents that occur in combat situations/combat zones...

...then the recruitment rate would drop to near zero!

(In other words, the amount of friendly fire incidents are astounding to say the least. But in combat situations, it is bound to happen due to the chaos of battle).

I agree with Democrats. The US Miltary is horrible because they tried to make Pat Tillman a hero instead of a pawn for the Democrats evil political agenda. Democrats could not give a DAMNN about the life of Pat Tillman. Democrats think all military people are idiots who joined because they were to stupid to do any better. And Pat Tillman was the dumbest of them all. What Democrat alive would give up millions to serve his country?

Fact: A lie is told for a reason and the incident is no reason to lie, for what. So, if they told these mothers a lie that was basically too easy and simply for them to notify the families, this means that it is much more to this. Maybe they where somewhere they where not suppose to be. Never the less she loss her son and the military did not, have not and probable will not reveal the truth. There is more than what is nearly revealed and the sad part is that they feel like they gave her an answer and that is that. If it was simply an accident seem they would have revealed this at that time, becauseno criminal charges would not have been filed because it was accident. It is so crazy how the military covers ther own. I for one knows this, my brother was shot and killed by a guy in the military and they wisked him off in hiding real quit, and he was never charged with my brothers murder and although we''ve tried to find out where this guy was stations, we''ve had no luck and no help fromt he military. This man short my brother in cold blood because of a women that my brother was dating and she was cheating with this man. Killed my brother in his own apartment complex coming home one night, and he left his body out there until a neighbor came out to go to work at 4am.
Peggy''s lost is a tragedy and I wish her the best and that somehow the truth will be revealed to her. I can''t image what these last four year have been like, not knowing.
God Bless Peggy & Family

demslie....I have read many of your posts in the past and have held back from comment because I know you cannot have a reasonable conversation. But this one has to be addressed. How dare you say that all democrats hate military people? I am a democrat and I served in the military with pride and honor, (probably more than can be said by you) and I have the highest respect for anyone who wears the uniform. In my eyes Pat Tillman is a hero, whether he died by enemy fire or by friendly fire. The fact that the administration tried to use him to pump up support for their war turns my stomach. When you say "what democrat would give up millions to serve his country" you had better take a look at your sniveling cowardly "heros" like Cheney, Limbaugh, Hannity and Rumsfeld. Not one of them had the cohones to put on the uniform. Cheney..5 deferments.."had better things to do"...Limbaugh..had a boil on his butt...in SO much pain....just two examples. As for your fearless leader bush...have daddy get you to the top of the list for the ANG..do just enough to fly under the radar...then disappear. Are you just someone who craves attention by putting up these ridiculous posts or are you a total moron? One other question. Do you talk to people in person the way you talk on line? If you do you must be one tough customer cause if I did it I''d get my arse kicked every day.

My goodness. You liberal democrat-types are wondering what is wrong with the military? How soon we forgot what the Clinton gang did for eight years, dragging the military down to their PC-nazi standards, reducing training levels, forcing acceptance of sub-standard members, encouraging very non-aggressive leaders until we had cretins like General Tony McPeak ripping apart the Air Force until he was forced out, etc, etc. The officers in charge today are those that were raised and promoted by the Clinton team. Don''t complain - this is what happens when you put a draft-dodger like Clinton in charge. Feh.

The American military is neither good nor bad. When these men and women sign that dotted line, they agree to do the bidding of the president (who''s supposed to be following the rules of the constitution and the American people).

I look on it much like k9 cop units (which I admire greatly). When a handler sics his dog on innocent people, who''s to blame? The dog? or the handler?

The American people is spending billions and billions of dollars in training and equipment to have a military defend the US. Young men and women sign up and agree to give their lives if needed to keep us safe and free. So why are we electing such poor, irresponsible handlers? and why are we continuing to let these handlers stay in control?

"obliterate iran hillary" and "100 years in Iraq McCain" supporters take note! Our military is a good asset, but it''s only as good as the handlers.

Why is it so difficult to accept that the military is a reflection of our society, for good or for ill? The corporate suck-ups of Enron, the mortgage traders and the liars are all represented in the military. Equally represented are the heroes of Flight 93, doctors who give their lives to the poor, teachers and volunteers of all kinds.

We''d better take a look at who has voted against a decent GI Bill, against 15-month stateside deployments after 15-month tours, and against full funding for our soldiers'' health care. Take a look at who wants to dismantle the VA and turn vets'' care over to "the market".

skulldigger7....Who said there was something wrong with the military? Fact is that our military has done a fantastic job under the circumstances. You just can''t resist that "liberal democrat" BS that you guys constantly rely on cause you don''t have anything else. We have the finest military on the face of the planet and we are all, (us liberals) very proud of them. It has only been recently that the military has started to accept people with criminal pasts or in other words started to accept what once would have been sub standard members. Had we continued to spend on the military at the rate that Reagan was we would have bankrupted the country. Bush the first was the one who started the military spending cutbacks. Clinton just continued those policies. Try to get your facts straight before you start to run your mouth. And please remember that the republicans have not cornored the market on cohones. Some of us libs have a pretty good sized pair too.

You are right, the job of President is a tough one EXPECIALLY if you do it the way say a Franklin Roosevelt handled it. What this piece of human trash, YOU call a President did was NOT acceptable though. He INTENTIONALLY and with the WILL of THOUGHT LIED to the people of this nation, took troops away from the fight against those who attacked us and Attacked another nation for OIL!! I don''t know anything lower than that. NO American should die in Combat UNLESS it''s NECESSARY and OIL or any of the other LIES we''ve been told about it does NOT meet that test. By the way, a YEAR and 26 DAYS in the jungle of Vietnam provides me the right to comment as well. Sieg Heil Bush

The families will never learn the truth as bush would not be able to tell the truth, EVEN IF HE HAD TO ON THE WATER BOARD IN CUBA, about any thing from his desertion in 1972 to the lying about WMD and Nuclear Bombs, and what have you to the starting of this war with lies and now the americans who sent their children of in valor seeking medasls of honor as fodder for his cannons for a deceitful idiot like bush and expect the truth tell them, to hang it up, I have known this little squint eyed liar since about 1970 and have never known him to tell the truth, my heart goes out to those who did not vote for bush but for those who voted him into office I say you got what you wanted.

The people involved in and with war know that about 10 percent of the causalities are from friendly fire. The percentage may go up and down over time. This was in Iraq and Afghanistan is no exception. It is just a very true fact of fighting wars. The soldier or soldiers that makes this kind of mistake may not know of their mistake until some time later. And then it may never be know exactly whose bullet killed the man. At times more than one soldier is firing at a target.
Very bad deal, but there again this is war we are talking about and they are scared for their life as well.

And there is no doubt that some of those killed are killed on purpose. In other words MURDERED.
It happened in Viet Nam and was know as Fraging. It happened in World War-II, and will continue to happen as long as we have War%u2019s around the earth.

This business of the military not coming clean up front is crazy. Because it just makes matters worse for them and for the families of the dead soldier. In these kind of cases the question as to WHO fired the fatal shot or threw the grenade is never known.

The crazy Bushys would like us all to forget the trashing of our country and our military that he and Cheyney have done. They like to use the name "Bush Haters'' to label anyone who wants him to be held responsible for the damage he has done. It sounds like the parent of the 12 year old kid who beat up your 1st grader at the bus stop. When you call them to report the incident, they will say something like, "It didn''t happen and your kid was asking for it anyway." If we just "forget" this recent "history" we are doomed to "repeat it" in the form for John Wacko McCain.

Our military is primarily made up of low income men and woman who have no other choices but to go fight the war. Most of the men and women fighting this war are from inner city ghettos like Detroit. The people involved in the decisions of what happens to these Americans wouldn''t otherwise give them the time of day. So why is it so surprising that the military would lie to the grieving families when they lied to the entire world on the possessions of WMD''S in the first place? These officials could care less about these people who risk their lives to fill the pockets of Bush and his cronies. These soldiers live in filthy barracks inundated with roaches and raw sewage, they have horrible healthcare, the military sends them back to jobless situations in hopes that they will be forced to return for a 3rd and 4th tours of duty. The high ranking military we all say we%u2019re so proud of are liars, manipulators, and downright evil when it comes to treating the lower life forms we call soldiers in the military. We should be ashamed of our country for the way they treat these men and women and we should be standing up and demanding better treatment and futures for them.

Good for Peggy Buryj!!! Don''t believe ANYTHING the Pentagon (Pentagram) tells you. They have no history of honesty or integrity, even though they promote those values as critical for their members.

Was the military honest with America about Jessica Lynch? No, they invented a story that she herself said was a lie.

Were they honest with America or Pat Tillman''s family? No, again a huge lie!

The Pentagram is in the business of exploiting people''s patriotism and killing people. Why would anyone believe them in the first place?

My point is that the upper officials of our military prey on young men and women who are often poor and uneducated. If this country spent half of the time educating these kids instead of hooking them into fighting their dirty war then they wouldn%u2019t be at a disadvantage but rather they would have more aspirations for their own futures other than going to war and getting blown up. The military gets away with this because everyone puts the military on a pedestal and considers them heroes because they signed up to go fight, it takes more than that for me to name a hero%u2026sorry. THERE WERE NO WMD%u2019s PERIOD!!!! Iraq WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR 9/11 PERIOD!!!! When will the American military fess up to this?? And as far as your threat to me%u2026You prove my point, that most of the military are brainwashed and all they can use is violence towards those who don%u2019t buy into their ***! The hero%u2019s in this story are those who are in the right place, Afghanistan searching for Bin Laden. Now those men and women are hero%u2019s%u2026it%u2019s like this country bombed Mexico for Pearl Harbor, it doesn%u2019t make sense%u2026Bush wanted to go to war with Iraq long before 9/11 and now he is lining his pockets and his cronies pockets with lots of American tax dollars and he is abusing the right to use Americans to fight his war.

I made my point clear, you didn''t. I phrased mine so there was no misunderstanding. I am neither brainwased nor brainless. please go back and read what was ''said''.

His Buddies hated him.. He was too perfect, too handsome, too rich, and had too much attention paid to him because of his NFL status. Men are jealous ****** too. They killed him, plain and simple.

War is not a video game and our government and military knows we are all expendable under the notion of patriotism...Game Over!

"I am sick and tired of all the liberal a** holes trying to blame President Bush for everything, this only shows your ignorance. He has done a lot of things wrong (my opinion only)but he cannot control every thing that goes on. Wait until you get a democratic president and see what happens." Posted by dmw1167

Bush started this war. It had nothing to do with 9/11. Everything bad associated with Iraq is his fault. He is responsible for every death, for every no bid contract and for destroying our country to keep that horrible mistake afloat. It IS George Bush''s fault!

dmw1167....This has nothing to do with Tillman''s football career or his volunteering for service knowing that danger was involved. This is a clear cut case of the current administration using this man''s death to prop up sagging support for their war. They did the same thing with Jessica Lynch. And I''m sick and tired of you neocon jaggoffs not having the guts to admit that your great liar in chief is a gutless coward who lies out his arse to the American people. And I hate to break it to you but he is ultimately responsible for everything that goes on. Remember the sign on Truman''s desk that read, "THE BUCK STOPS HERE". And I''m also sick and tired of you buttweisels throwing around the word "liberal" like it was something coated with *****. The word simply means that we are willing to listen and think for ourselves instead of having to listen to Limbaugh and Hannity and be told what to think. No one has any way of knowing what the next administration will bring. You think you do but unless you are able to see the future you have no more idea than any one else. You better hope that whoever gets in can at least tell the American people the truth instead of a bunch of lies. It''s time for the truth...we''re grown up enough to handle it.

The Bush administration is built of lies.

They started with 935 lies to bring us into war.

As Harry Powell said, "A liar is an abomination in the eyes of the Lord."

George W Bush and his entire administration are abominations in the eyes of the Lord."
