Does A Right-Wing Conspiracy Help Hillary?

Obama Supporter Says Republican Commentators Are Aiming To Skew Primary Results

Democratic Richmond, Va. Mayor and Barack Obama supporter Doug Wilder and Hillary Clinton supporter Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) discuss the upcoming primary elections with Bob Schieffer.

  • Video Dems Face Off For Voters

Bob Schieffer speaks with Democratic Richmond, Va. Mayor and Barack Obama supporter Doug Wilder and Hillary Clinton supporter Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) about upcoming primary elections.

  • Video Opinion: Political Spin

In his political commentary, Bob Schieffer expresses his concern over the controversies, skepticisms, and cynicisms that have emerged over the last several decades throughout the Washington media.

Mayor Douglas Wilder of Richmond, Va., on "Face The Nation."  (CBS)

(CBS)  In states such as Indiana where open primaries allow independent and Republican Party members to vote for Democratic presidential candidates, right-wing radio commentators are exhorting their listeners to cross party lines and vote for Sen. Hillary Clinton, in the hope that she - and not Sen. Barack Obama - will become the nominee against Sen. John McCain, a supporter of Obama said.

Mayor Douglas Wilder of Richmond, Va., a former senator, said a concerted effort by right-wing media was driving voters to Clinton because, he feels, she is the weaker candidate for the Democratic nomination.

"Why are the poll numbers showing a certain element of the voter being unreachable as far as Barack is concerned? Let's get real. Who is running all of the ads on a regular basis? The bloggers, the right-wing commentators on the radio," Wilder told Face The Nation host Bob Schieffer. "Who are they supporting? Not Barack Obama. They are literally begging people - and these are Republicans - literally begging people, 'Please vote for Hillary Clinton.'

"They have no intention of supporting Hillary Clinton in November. And why are they doing that? Why is it Barack Obama can reach what some call the 'elite voter' but he can't reach the others? That's poppycock. There is a concentrated effort to derive those voters away from him and to drive them to Hillary Clinton, because many of them think that Hillary will be the weaker.”

Concurring with Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., Wilder said that the Democrats faced a "riotous" convention if the will of the people - in terms of a candidate with the greatest number of pledged delegates and primary or votes - was usurped by the party's superdelegates. "People would be tremendously upset," he said.

Clyburn, however, went further, believing that such a decision might inspire violence.

It would certainly breed discontent, he said, especially among younger voters, as he described his visits to historical black colleges and universities in his district: "That is what these young people were saying to me. They were very, very upset with all of this talk about superdelegates overturning their energies and overturning their efforts.

"A lot of them were saying that they felt that all of this talk about Senator Obama [was] just ways to damage him permanently for making it impossible for him to win even if he were to get the nomination.

"These young people have come into this party to the extent that I have not seen in 40 years. And we ought not be doing or saying anything to tamp down their enthusiasm."

Clyburn's message to the superdelegates who are free to vote their will? "They are free to take all of these things into account. And I think that they should. What they are not free to do, in my opinion, is to just outright reject or overturn without sufficient cause what may have happened in these various caucuses and these primaries.

"Be very, very careful. Don't do it just because you got the power to do it, but have good reasons if it comes to that."

While Clyburn and Wilder debated the impact or non-impact upon Obama's campaign by the recent remarks of Rev. Lawrence Wright, Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., and a Clinton supporter, said that her willingness to stay in the race demonstrated a toughness and perseverance that is attractive to voters.

"She's a fighter," Bayh said. "And I think people know that it's not going to be easy to deliver the kind of results that they want. And it's her fortitude, in some ways the fact that she's been knocked down. There have been all these calls for her to quit, to go away, to disenfranchise the people of our state, for example. But she says, no, I'm in this for the American people. I'm going to stand strong for them.

"And so it's that grit and determination I think people like, plus the level of experience, the ability to deliver results.

"Barack is a very formidable person, a gifted candidate, and is very persuasive at any number of levels, but it's that between two good people, that perception that one has a little bit more experience and probably can actually deliver the kind of change that people are looking for I think that's resonating well here in the heartland."

It is pretty obvious how badly Obama is being backhanded by the networks. Nobody is perfect and everybody deserves scrutiny... and yes he has to take his lumps...but the rah rah Hillary love fest that has gone on for the past month is disgusting.
Every single network... is making it look like he has absolutely no chance of getting a poor white person to vote for him...and I dont think it would be the case.. if it werent being hammered into white peoples heads by the AP all day everyday. What has Obama personally done to these people?

I also feel that if Barack is railroaded there will be violence... somebody is going to get hurt. At least give the appearance of fairness...Obama cant buy a break. Its like watching an innocent Lamb being pushed into the slaughter house.

Hillary owes a large portion of her success/ life to the 24 hr Anti-Obama fest that began on Fox news and thats the truth... its a shame but its the truth.

Fox has been marathoning Obama slander and hate for a month straight and the rest of the networks have cought on and bought in ...Hillary couldnt help but benefit.

It hurts to watch this happen... thats the honest to gods truth. and thats all that it is...

Who will Dems choose?

Well, I was going to vote for Hillary, but on the strength of this Republican interest, I''m voting for Obama now. We need to take the Republicans down come November: that''s the FIRST priority. If they think Obama''s the man to do it, THEN so do I.

I''m not really buying this. This is about nothing more than the continuing backlash going on in the democratic party. Obama is not going to be elected. Hillary probably won''t have an opportunity to find out. The cards have been and are stacked against her by the party heads. The far left loons aren''t going to be satisfied with just letting this play out. The republicans better hope that Hillary doesn''t win. She''s a fighter and a seasoned politican. She''s not going to fold up and spend the entire run up to the vote for president trying to spin her way out of her past. This whole thing is just polital nonsense and CBS has an agenda too. Nothing is as it seems in politics. Never was, never will be.

I guess you know how Clinton''s supporters felt for most of this race. When your person benefits from the media bashing their head against concrete, you don''t feel bad. When it''s your candidate- you become angry and don''t want to vote for the other one. Welcome to the Clinton side. That''s what we have been saying all along: why can''t the media be fair? Why can''t Dems stop being so bigoted and mean?

I have watched the Dems do this year after year. I just don''t get it. The Repubs. are always bashed by the media, but they still come out and support the candidate. The Dems always let the media trash their frontrunner and then anger the entire party later.

PS: Please include Huffingtonpost, Daily Kos, and Politico (until recently) on that list of "media."

The Super Delegates are well aware that the reason Obama has done well in the caucuses is because his people go in there and actually intimidate the voters into voting for him!

Hillary is being supported by republicans because a battle with the Clintons would unify the republican base and give them their only chance of winning in the fall.
Fortunately Senator Obama will be our nominee. A man of great character, wisdom, and integrity. I am looking forward to having a leader I actually respect in the white house. I am so grateful he is willing to go through this ugly contest to fight for the right to lead our nation. I know that he has demonstrated remarkable restraint in not attacking the Clintons, as he could, with all of their smelly garbage collecting flies in the background. He has chosen not to win that way. The Clintons will clearly do anything, say anything, lie, cheat, steal, destroy, do whatever they can to try to win. As a country we need to demonstrate that this will NOT be rewarded as an example for all americans.
I believe Michelle Obama will be an excellent first lady and that Senator Obama has the potential of becoming one of the greatest leaders of our time.

CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN!

This remark is very insulting to the black electorate. Clyburn is insinuating that blacks will riot if they do not get Obama as the democratic presidential candidate.
Will this work in November too? Vote for Obama or we will burn and loot your cities and rape your wives.
Let''s put it on a bumper sticker.

The only solution here is this: during the next presidential election, ALL primaries are held on the same day. That way people won''t know in advance that their vote in one party doesn''t matter so they should vote in the other.

Anyone have a problem with this?

mon kie,

Do you remember the violence when the cops who beat Rodney King were acquitted? Have you been reading the headlines NOW about demonstrations over the acquittal of the cops who shot that fellow (Bell?) in NY on his wedding night?

That people might predict violence if the black community feels a severe injustice is HISTORICALLY BASED. The black community HAS reacted violently to perceived injustice.

That''s not a judgment of good or bad....that''s paying attention to recent history.

1. I for one remember Obama''s cheating the earlier primarys with the "Be a Democrat for a Day" campaign. My mother lives in Florida and was handed one, they magicaly appears again in severall other primarys. So, who is cheating the system? Obama!!

2. Perhaps republican news are reporting polls that show Hillary in a fiar light, maybe this is because the rest of the MSM is in the tank for Obama. Hillayr supporters have seen this for months now. Never thought I''d wathc FOX news, but that was before the rest of the media crowned the Messiah!!

Obama is toast now, falling in the polls, proven to be a bigot and a snob. He should go back to Chicago where he learned to steal and manipulate elections.

One cannot help but wonder WHY the Black community always reacts violently instead of pursuing other non-violent avenues?

We have to get Obama in and not Hillary. Hillary is the elitist. She is running on Bills record. She has done nothing for the people. She has lied. She is being sued in Paul v Clinton. She was on the board of Walmart. She voted for war. She will attack Iran. Her gas holiday is very flawed-wow we can save 28 dollars in three months. Yeh that''ll help alot. And if any one looks up the transcript on O Riellys show they will see where she said "Thank God for rich people like us....." How is that coming for someone who is supposedly for the working man.

These days, being elected to office is about POWER and doing what is best for the individual parties and to secure control of the nation ... they couldn''t care less about what is best for THE PEOPLE! It''s all about power and money and that is the fact of the matter.

Everyone needs to vote for Micky Mouse this year ... or Superman, whoever you like best!

Why do I sense that the voters and super delegates are being "blackmailed" with veiled threats of unrest and even riots unless Obama gets the nomination? This would explain why so many Democratic Party leaders, not to mention, the talking heads in the main street media, began in early January to demand over and over that Clinton drop out.

I think Clyburn needs to go back to these "younger voters" and tell them they better just sit on their "discontent" because the elders of the Democrat Party havedecided Hillary Clinton must be the Nominee. The Democratic party elders have been quietly seeking the opinion of party experts, including Hillary and Bill, as to whether Obama has a chance in the GE and have become convinced he does not. These "young voters" need to be reminded they are young and need to be patient and accept the wisdom of more experienced hands.

The superdelegates are there for the express purpose of preventing an effort such as yours. You''''d be sickened if democrats did the same thing to you, believe ME! Please leave.

Any truth that Hillary and her personal assistant, Huma Abedin are lovers? According to Bill%u2019s long-time ex-girlfriend Gennifer Flowers, Hillary enjoyed performing oral *** on other women. On p.41 of Flowers%u2019 autobiography "Gennifer Flowers: Passion and Betrayal", Gennifer asked Bill if there was any truth to the rumor that Hillary was having an affair with another woman. Bill laughed and said (referring to Hillary): "Honey - she%u2019s probably eaten more p%u2014y than I have

Actually, the truth is: I have a blast in here! You Moronic Libs posting in here represent roughly .01% of the Democrats in the country and you all believe that you are our all-knowing saviors and that if we listen to you guys, you will save the world ... LOL! This forum is the ONLY place where you can even HOPE for anyone to listen to your diluted, self-important BS and I am just here to give you all a reality check now and then. You guys are a HOOT to rile-up!

Republicans have nothing to lose if she''s nominated. They win in November, even if she beats McCain. She''s not going to do anything to upset the status quo, since she is part of it.The people that are voting for her are fools. She is part of the problem, not the solution. If she "wins" the nomination,it''s another "dumb,or dumber" election, and there''s not much point in voting, other than giving Hillary and the dopes that support her,a slap in the face.Obama supporters need to tell the democratic party and Hillary to go to hell.Write in Obamas''name,or if you don''t have that option, stay home.Hillary and her supporters think they''re so smart, and won''t back Obama in the general,we need to leave them "high and dry",if she steals the nomination.Nobama?NO HILLARY!

When you asked Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., on your show today Bob about his remarks in reference to Sen. Clinton referencing "riots" at the Convention if Super Delegates gave the nomination to Sen. Clinton and voters perceived she didn''t deserve it or it was stolen from Sen. Obama, I thought Rep. Clyburn gave a great answer. The reason I thought Rep. Clyburns answer was great was because he noted that while he said it, he personally didn''t say it, his constituents actually said it and he just echoed it! This is the way politics and politicians are suppose to work! Elected officials are suppose to collect communications from their constituents, compose them and speak for their constituents with one voice, and not voice their personal opinions or views or make decisions out of sync with the voters they represent, a major problem many have with Pres. Bush who always seems to be doing his own thing and not what the American people want! I like any politician from any party who operates like Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C. does!
