(AP)  A 17-year-old girl gave birth secretly at home, then walked four blocks to a hospital with the baby still attached by its umbilical cord.

"I was just a little nervous" when the labor began, Xochitl Parra said Friday from St. Mary Medical Center as she cradled her 8-pound, 3-ounce son, Alejandro.

The boy was normal and "eating like a champ," said Dr. Jose Perez, director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The teenager said she was alone and taking a shower around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday to get ready for school. Then the contractions took over.

"I felt his head coming, so I sit down and pushed so he could come out," she said.

Parra did not call 911 because the home phone was disconnected, and she did not want to wake the neighbors because it was so early. Instead, she wrapped the baby, got dressed and went to the hospital on foot.

"I started walking and jogging to the hospital," she said.

The teen came into the hospital lobby and asked for help, Perez said.

"She still had the placenta and the baby was still attached, so of course everyone said, 'Don't move!"' he said.

Perez praised the girl for taking quick action.

"They could have bled to death; thank God that didn't happen," the doctor said. "She was very clever. She knew what to do. She wrapped the baby up and walked over here."

Parra, a sophomore at Long Beach Poly High, said she had kept her pregnancy a secret because she was afraid her mother would "kick me out of the house." Her mother has now accepted the situation and is going to help the teen care for the baby so she can continue attending school, Parra said.

Perez called the outcome "heartwarming."

"We hear so much negative with teenagers throwing their babies in the dumpsters," he said. "This baby is fine, and hopefully there will be a happy ending with the extended family."

bhappy2-2,
There''s a difference between an opinion and an assumption. Most people on here are stating their "opinion" on information not presented and with great prejudice, which makes them assumptions. I''m not offended, more like sadden by what I''ve been reading.

PaganMama- If the opinions of others who post here offends you please remember you are under no obligation to read them. You are also not forced to agree with them. However, the other people who post here do not need your permission to post or your acceptance of their opinion to validate themselves. again I ask: WHERE IN THIS ARTICLE DOES IT SAY THE GIRL OR ANY MEMBER OF HER FAMILY IS HERE ILLEGALLY?

Stop making assumption based on appearance, name and socio-economic status

Maybe we need to change the 14th amendment, something like:"At least one of the parents must be a citizen, or in the process of acquiring legal citizenship prior to the birth for the child to automatically have citizenship bestowed upon them."

When I was 16 years old, I went to Planned Parenthood and used my allowance to buy birth control pills. I borrowed my mother''s Volkswagen beetle after school to drive to the next town where the clinic was located. After a while I started driving my friends to Planned Parenthood, too. This was back in 1970, before Roe v. Wade; abortion for girls under 18 was unheard of unless the girl was from a rich family and then she would be flown out of the country. I was also convinced that my family would throw me out on the street if I became pregnant. I am so grateful for Planned Parenthood because they allowed me to have a great life without an unwanted pregnancy. I have no regrets - I got through high school and went on to work, then join the military, then go to college, and have a great life with a wonderful husband. More kids nowadays have to get out of denial about their lives being ruined by an unplanned (and usually unwanted) pregnancy. Using birth control saved my life, and I''d love to see more young kids have access to affordable birth control.

The main reason is the nanny govt. They told/tell how the kid is to be raised..Most don''t care and let run wild. They can be taught manners, have good citizenship. Not ssas adults . Was the parents the way they raise their kids.

I did not vote for God to be taken out of the school. I lived in foster homes and we did not attend church. I was born the year they barred God.Sep of church and state. Foster parents had rules. I was grounded and the klike. No meant NO. People there is one race..human race. America has never been a Christian nation. Years ago children were raised to know right from wrong. We did not go to church. There were rules and they cbayed..I could not relate to to the seeing world..I am appalled..bush was not raised right..it shows..

The main problem to all this is the fact that GOD was taken out of schools, whether you believe or not, open you intellectual minds and try to read the bible, what in there is bad for our children when it comes to moral values? I am curious to meet a parent who does not want their children to learn compassion, faith, courage, standing up for their beliefs, OBEYING their parents and sooooo many more wonderful values. When God was taken out, you could now spare the rod, spoil the child for fear of going to jail for disciplining your child which simply means "to guide". When God was taken out of school hope was lost to those who need hope the most and was replaced with drugs, alcohol, violence and ***. Instead of praying our children started grabbing guns. Instead of honoring thier parents, our children started running the streets and having *** at a young age and there fore having children at a young age. WE have only our selves to blame, SO was it really worth taking God and all his moral values away because you dis agreed with His existance? Great job america, vote, cause a problem and then blame everyone but yourself for it. That''s just how we run our lives isn''t it? And we wonder why our children are the way they are.

"..every child is a child of God."

Excuse me while I puke. Gimme a break. So you won''t mind helping her out with the babysitting then.

EVERY girl/woman who gets pregnant should have the baby? In all cases? is that what you Jesus freaks/Catholics want? More unwanted babies. More teenage girls delivering babies. Why? What''s to be gained?

Teenage girls should have access to the morning after pill. That''s better than them hiding the fact that they''re pregnant until it''s too late to do anything without the Pope showing up at the abortion clinic. And promote BIRTH CONTROL so they don''t get pregnant in the first place for crying out loud!

These girls, of all races, are clueless. They let these h o r n y, pimple-faced boys talk them into unprotected s e x. A boy they''ll probably never see again. At least use a condom! Gee whiz. Come on now. This is the 21ST CENTURY. You''re not living in the 18th century.

Are these girls trying to s c r e w up their lives? Seems like it. Now her poor mother has to get involved. I''m sure she was dying to take care of a baby again. Babies need stuff: clothes, diapers, food, medical care, etc. It never ends. Who is going to pay for it? Mom & maybe the local government. A minimum wage job doesn''t pay too many bills.

They should put condoms in the school restrooms. Boys shouldn''t have to go to the school nurse & answer 20 questions, fill out a form or worry about their parents finding out. If they''re going to do it then they might as well use a condom.

Tell the Catholic Church to shove their morality. Who are they to preach anyway?

no PERIOD and and items used for that was not replaced and used.
Morning sickness.
wanting odd foods.
The signs..
9 MONTHES AND THEY DIDN''T KNOW..they are not blind. The school..
Why is children so scared to go to their parents..FEAR..there is a problem.. My mother was kicked out of home and school and I am the reason. Yep.That was 54. She was carrying me at 16..married Dad at 16 and at 17 I was born. she was a kid..She knew nothing of the sp needs of my blindness and c/p. Sometimes it is the mother that walks out. That was way we were to foster homes. I was visiting her and she could not figgar out sis''s moodyness. I asked has she had her period yet..the 1st one..Have ye talked to her about it. Have ye gotten her and best and pads no ye did not that was 77. I said she will ''fore I go back to the blind centre, Sis did had nothing for it..I gave her mine. A mother. I was appalled. That she could not talk about this as it is narmal. This girl was smart as to get to hospital.

Well, bottom line: whether they are Mexican, shopped at Walmart, had premarital relations without benefit of birth control, or we don''t like the Grandma''s hairstyle, she did step up and take care of the baby, scared witless or not.

ANOTHER THING, ABOUT BABIES BEING BORN HERE DON''''T YOU KNOW THEY ARE ALREADY LEGAL BECAUSE THEY WRE BORN HERE, ANOTHER THING DID U KNOW THEY CAN ADOPT THERE PARENTS AND MAKE THEM LEGAL IF THERE NOT ALREADY!!

Ya know, used to a person could marry a citizen and become a citizen automatically, however that was changed. Maybe we need to change the 14th amendment, something like:"At least one of the parents must be a citizen, or in the process of acquiring legal citizenship prior to the birth for the child to automatically have citizenship bestowed upon them."

God Bless America! And God bless each of you with compasion so that you may truely understand that every child is a child of God. There is a reason for everything. You may put other people down as bleeding heart liberals but Jesus Christ was compasionate and as the richest country we have enough food to go around. "Judge not that ye be not judged."

Well, I got my answer. Since a majority of the Hispanic are Catholics, and Catholics are against birth-control, there''s the answer of why she didn''t make the boy were a condom.

Don''''t get me wrong... she should have prevented this in the first place but so should the boy as well.
Posted by fabrat1 at 04:02 PM : May 04, 2008
Well, unless she was raped, she had a choice. She could''ve told the boy NO. At least she could''ve made him use a condom. Why was she not on birth control? It is free from the clinics.

First off dognuts:
Mexico was paid cold hard cash for those states. Secondly, it isn''t nice to accuse someone of stealing your stolen property. The Spanish/Mexicans stole the land from the natives, so???

httpwwwnews But who are you to judge who can take better care of that baby? There are pay phones still you know or the neighbors have a phone for Dr. appointments. I never said it would be easy for her but if her family will help her and the baby can be taken care of then it belongs with it''''s mother.
