(AP)  Hillary Rodham Clinton called for a vote Friday in the Democratic-controlled Congress on a summertime suspension of the federal gasoline tax, a plan that Barack Obama dismissed as a political stunt that would cost thousands of construction jobs.

"It's a Shell game. Literally," Obama said to laughter from his campaign audience, adding it would mean little for hard-pressed consumers.

The Democratic presidential rivals highlighted their differences in ads and speeches across North Carolina and Indiana, two states with primaries Tuesday.

Polls point toward a particularly close finish in Indiana, which is next door to Obama's home state of Illinois.

Surveys show him with a dwindling advantage in North Carolina, and Clinton decided to spend all of Friday and Saturday in the state before returning to Indiana for a final push.

The two primaries have 187 national convention delegates at stake.

Obama, the front-runner, leads in the overall delegate competition, 1,736.05-1602.5. Clinton won a decisive victory last week in Pennsylvania and is counting on a strong run through the late primaries to persuade convention superdelegates to help her overtake her rival.

Jolted by Thursday's defection of Joe Andrew, a former national party chairman, Clinton responded with a letter from seven other former party heads and the family of an eighth.

"Her base of support includes women, Hispanics, seniors, Catholics, middle and low-income Americans, and rural, suburban and urban voters. That's a formidable coalition tailor-made for victory in a November general election," they wrote.

They added that if the election were held today, Clinton would defeat Republican Sen. John McCain and win the White House. "Obama would lose to the presumptive GOP nominee," they wrote.

Polls are equivocal on that point. Moreover, they have been particularly volatile in recent weeks as campaign criticism takes its toll on the two Democrats and Obama grapples with controversy stemming from the rhetoric of his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Despite a fierce, occasionally personal campaign, to a surprising degree the former first lady and Obama have generally agreed on most policy issues.

That made the proposed suspension in the gasoline tax an exception.

And while there is little support among the Democratic congressional leadership for the plan, it was a disagreement that both presidential contenders appeared content to perpetuate.

"All I hear about is gas prices. Gas and diesel, everywhere," Clinton said in Kinston, N.C. "Some people say we don't need to get a gas tax holiday at all, it's a gimmick ... I want the Congress to stand up and vote. Are they for the oil companies, or are they for you?"

Later, in Hendersonville, she added, "I know where I stand and I know where my opponents stand. ... Senator Obama doesn't want us to take down the gas tax this summer and Senator McCain wants us to, but he doesn't want to pay for it."

CLINTON supporters caught LYING to NC voters w/ robo-calls

washingtonpost.com %u2014 The group has landed in legal hot water in North Carolina for robo-calling voters, heavily skewed to African Americans. Notably, calls came AFTER the primary registration date, causing voters to question whether they were eligible to vote in the NC primary on Tuesday.

I FEEL SORRY FOR THOSE WHO ARE DUPED BY THEM. IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS- IT IS STUPIDITY.

Philly1550 - I hope your name refers to the city and not the horse Hillary made a photo-op out of. That horse (Eight Belles) - the philly in the Derby had to be killed after the race after breaking down after the second turn. Bizarre and ominous omen after she sent Chelsey to bet on her pick.

hahahaha - Hillary could not name a single economist that supported the "gas tax holiday" sham. No a single one. I hope they do have a vote! It would be yet another embarrassment for the Clinton campaign.

Oboma is a fraud, and CBS polls are liberal at best if not down right fraud for Oboma! Hillary wins Indiana by 12-15% and NC by 2-3%! The problem with Obomer is his lack of any credibility he is a junior half term Senator with no resume to even be in the Senate other than he got put in a senator by the Chicago Democrat party, his only claim to fame is he spoke at the loosers Convention for Kerry who got beat by a media maligned president BUSH by over 3 million votes! He will lose the nomination, if he doesn''''t the GOP sweeps the house The senate and the Presidency! Obomer loses 50 of 50 states including his home state. He is in trouble because of the Rezko Trial, which paints Obomer into a criminal conspirocy!
Just ask yourselves would you trust a Half Muslim to have the nukes at his finger tips! I don''''t!
Why is the world turning conservitive in the EU and the UK and the Demonicrats put up the most ultra liberal kook job Obomer who will oose 50 of 50 state in a general election?

Was it not Obama that wanted to give just 250 dolars for a stimulas package. If You ask me that was not much hlep either. The 600 dollars I got will help more. Sorry folks I just don''''t think Mr. Obama has a clear vision for all Americans. Especial us blue collar workers.
He has the talk but I have yet to see the walk.
I will not trust my future to just hope and broad base actions.
Obama says he is transparent.
Why did he lie about his relationship with Tony Rezko
Not a few hours but 20 years.
Why did he lie about the contributions from Rezko it went from 50,000 to over 250,000 dollars in contributions.
Why did he wait so long to renounce Rev. Wright. He had heard his Racists words for 20 years.
He says he will be right on day one. But says he will make mistakes and has made "bonehead" decessions.
I have seen 8 years of bonehead decesions, I don''''t want 8 more.

Hillary and Bill are two of the biggest liars on the planet. "sniper fire" and "I did not have *** with that women" are two that come to mind. Mistakes..we all make them and Obama is no different. As far as Rev Wrights racist words..how many times have you heard a friend or co-worker use the "N" word and you said nothing?

Hillary''s gas tax suspension is just a gimmick. Every economist in the country and Obama thinks it''s a bad idea. Hillary and McCain think the American people are stupid. (It''s true in some cases...Bush got elected twice.) I think most people see this gas tax thing for what it is.."vote for me because I''m gonna save you $30.00 bucks this summer" It''s almost insulting.

popstom1: you''ve been conned. Nobody in congress is going to vote for this crack pot idea. And she can''t do it all by herself, even if she was president. Like all the other pandering news headlines she grabs, and has never ever accomplished anything. Nothing will come of this gas tax thing, but you''ve taken the bait; hook, line and sinker.

So instead of paying $3.78 a gallon we pay $3.60 a gallon. This will increase demand and gas prices will climb higher. Also, jobs will be lost and the roads and highways will be neglected. When the gas tax holiday is over gas prices will be around $4.00.
Way to go Hillary, you cemented my beliefs that you''re not fit to run this country, let alone your campaign.

In the case of Jeremiah Wright, this is particularly disturbing. Obama has spent twenty years in the church of this man whose basic ideology is Black Liberation Theology. This is nothing more than black separatism dressed up in fancy religious clothes. It stems from a movement that has been opposed to racial integration for more than a century.
He also chose to embrace Bill Ayers. At first I thought this was no big deal. After all, I had many friends in various radical movements (some violent) and if I ran into them on the street today, I would try to be cordial. And guilt by association is pretty sleazy behavior.
William Ayers and Obama worked together for eight years.Obama''s wife Michelle is a co worker with Ayers wife . William Ayers sure looks happy jumping on the American Flag doesn''t he? Every time I hear someone say Obama can''t be responsible for what other people do or say I say back to them that you are known by the company you keep. SORRY MY VOTE IS FOR HILLARY 2008
