Police Look For Links Between Young Woman's Murder And Father Who Held Daughter Captive For 24 Years

(AP)  Police are looking into possible links between a young woman's killing and the man who confessed to holding his daughter captive for 24 years and fathering her seven children, a senior law enforcement official said Wednesday.

Alois Lissl, the chief of police of Upper Austria province, said that although no evidence had surfaced so far, police have widened their investigation into the unsolved murder 22 years ago to include the incest suspect.

The bound body of 17-year-old Martina Posch was found on a shore of the Upper Austrian lake of Mondsee in 1986. Josef Fritzl's wife owned part of an inn and camping ground on the other side of the lake at that time.

Fritzl would be asked for an alibi because the property owned by his wife could mean he was in the area when Posch was killed, Lissl said.

"We are looking at the case from a third angle," he said of the new direction the investigation has taken.

Fritzl, 73, confessed Monday to imprisoning his daughter Elisabeth for 24 years in a warren of soundproofed cellar rooms, sexually abusing her, fathering seven children with her and discarding the body of an one, who died in infancy, in a furnace.

On Tuesday, tests confirmed that the retired electrician is the biological father of his daughter's six surviving children.

Three of the children were locked in the underground labyrinth with their mother for years.

Officials said a teenager conceived through incest is in critical condition at an Austrian hospital where she remains in a medically-induced coma. The 19-year-old is on dialysis and her condition has somewhat stabilized, the officials said. It was an appeal by doctors, mystified by her ailment, that brought the family's situation to light. One of those children died in infancy. Doctors said the other five are doing relatively well. One of the challenges they apparently face is getting used to daylight.

The case started unfolding on April 19 when one of the children held captive was found unconscious and was taken to a hospital. After receiving a tip, police picked up Elisabeth and her father on Saturday. Fritzl freed the captive children the same day.

Authorities say Fritzl led his wife to believe that Elisabeth had run away to join a religious cult when she disappeared.

Why only 15 years when he kept her in the basement for 24 years? Kidnapping, rape, mental and physical abuse to her and to the children, and 1 child died because of him. He desirves the same, a life sentence, a small cell, rape, and to know he''s going to die there.

This story has angered and depressed me like no other ever has. Twenty-four years and NO ONE SAW or HEARD ANYTHING? Why do men allow each other to behave in this way? I read in one article that a police officer describe Fritzl as potent. POTENT! The real hatred that men have against women or those "weaker" than themselves is something that is worldwide; not just an Austrian thing. Beating or raping a women does not make you more "manly" just more evil and subhuman. God only knows how many other cases like this there could be out there right now? I have to think that God really is a man just standing by, allowing this to happen.

BIG QUESTION: How long was the girl NOT in the prison (she was found wandering the streets with her father) and how did the sick child get out of the prison? Why did the father just not come forward and why did he not just let the sick one die and throw it in the furnace too and just keep his sick game going? Was it that, at 73, he no longer had the libido or inclination to keep raping his daughter and possibly his grandchildren/children also?

And in 24 years, the mom never was curious enough to open that door or wonder where the extra food her hubby was buying went? She knew--though due to how sick this all is, she may have convinced herself that she really did not know. Many women stand by and allow their husbands to rape their kids--it is often that, in incest, the mother accepts what is done to her child and keeps silent, often blaming the child but not her husband or boyfriend.

gurusavant, these sorts of punishments are not just happening in Europe, they are happening in all western countries.. every time a left wing government gets in they talk of stronger punishments and do nothing. they just tie the hands of the law enforcers behind their backs.. My son is a policeman and it is as though the left hate police.. and then the right don''t seem to do enough to reverse it.
