Key events in once friendly, now contentious relationship between Washington and Tehran.

  • Timeline Iran Nuclear Chronology

Events in development of Iran's nuclear program since it first came to light.

(CBS)  A second American aircraft carrier steamed into the Persian Gulf on Tuesday as the Pentagon ordered military commanders to develop new options for attacking Iran. CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports that the planning is being driven by what one officer called the "increasingly hostile role" Iran is playing in Iraq - smuggling weapons into Iraq for use against American troops.

"What the Iranians are doing is killing American servicemen and -women inside Iraq," said Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

U.S. officials are also concerned by Iranian harassment of U.S. ships in the Persian Gulf as well as Iran's still growing nuclear program. New pictures of Iran's uranium enrichment plant show the country's defense minister in the background, as if deliberately mocking a recent finding by U.S. intelligence that Iran had ceased work on a nuclear weapon.

No attacks are imminent and the last thing the Pentagon wants is another war, but Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen has warned Iran not to assume the U.S. military can't strike.

"I have reserve capability, in particular our Navy and our Air Force so it would be a mistake to think that we are out of combat capability," Mullen said.

Targets would include everything from the plants where weapons are made to the headquarters of the organization known as the Quds Force which directs operations in Iraq. Later this week Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is expected to confront the Iranians with evidence of their meddling and demand a halt.

If that doesn't produce results, the State Department has begun drafting an ultimatum that would tell the Iranians to knock it off - or else.

Good, the U.S. doesn''t have to put up with Iran and the *** that there trying to pull. Sending weapons to Iraq and then playing dumb about it. I don''t want to see another war but if Iran keeps this up, were going to have to shut them up....for good.

Man, can you think of all the good we could have done with the money spent on these wars? bush already has us in awful pickle and he''s about to make it worse!

The Iraq war is morphing into the Iran war.

There are now two trains of thought on this subject. One, Iran is a threat that must be dealt with, or two, We need to get out of Iraq and wait and see what happens.

Not very good choices, but I think they are what we have to choose from.

Yep, what has Bush got to lose?? Nothing he''s out in just a few months anyway what does he care. My nephew is in the Navy and there has been a lot of talk about going over there and other places too. Of course it''s all clasified information so he really couldn''t tell me anything but when I asked he just said he hear talk of things...... I don''t doubt it for a minute.

I''ve been preparing for civil war against these Fascist Neocon Nazis for sometime now, and I''d advise everyone who remembers the old America, before these Scumbags took over, to get ready as well.
Our Constitutional Rights are being subverted by the cops(gestapo)everyday, and they actually believe citizens have no rights from searches, siezures, and imprisonment without cause or charge, since they were indoctrinated in the "new rules" of the "Patriot Act".
(Notice how these Traitors lable everything that''s the exact opposite of what it really is???)
Payback time''s coming.

The Pelosicrats supported the declaration of the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization... The War Pig Congress has also acceded to Bush''s doctrine of hitting terrorists anywhere in the world.
While the grants are legally suspect, to say the least, enough murkiness exists to allow Bush to claim the power for a strike. Pelosi, if memory serves, made sure that no bill was passed that required Bush to ask their permission prior to an attack on Iran.

Write to Congress all you want...it will serve no purpose...just as the vote for Democrats in 2006 served no purpose, the War Pigs can, with Cheney, rightfully say "So?" when confronted with the fact that Americans overwhelmingly oppose the war.

I remember President Bush utilizing no diplomatic sense at all by threatening Iraq''s Saddam Hussein, and instead of using international pressure from allies like France and Germany, invade Iraq, kill 4000 troops to date (1000 more than 9/11) and cost us billions. That act reduced the credibility of the USA. The right move is to again, push for diplomacy, attempt to negotiate with Iran, encourage dialogue and get out of the Middle-east. An attack on Iran is risky, as it will certainly upset China and Russia, who are capable of striking the USA with nuclear weapons. Are we all prepared for WWIII? Yes, a controlled strike on Iran may deter them temporarily, but a full scale invasion would be needed. The Middle-east is a place so different from the West, they do not have the same culture or values. The USA needs to gain respect from allies and foes alike by slowly withdrawing from that region. The government of the USA should establish meaniful dialogue with Iran, so we all can live in this world, together.

Many Americans are so set on the left/right paradigm that even after 2006 should have shown them the futility of believing in the Democrats as an alternative, they are lining up behind the Demopublicans once more...the authors of all of our discontents.

Citizens to Bush: HELLOOOO, WE DON''T BELIEVE YOU THIS TIME EITHER.

Is there no atrocity too horrible for this administration to commit? Is there no lie too blatant for them to broadcast? Will they be happy only when the entire world is aflame with U.S. bombs? Can''t somebody stop these madmen?

Iraq, who allegedly posed such a grave danger to the U.S., could not defeat Iran in almost ten years of war. A U.S. attack on Iran may very well signal the end of U.S. military might--the only good thing that could possibly come out of such an act of villainy.

wow, another propoganda piece. There are no facts anywhere in the story above. Where exactly are these weapons being funneled into Iraq made? WHO in Iran is supplying them? Names please. WHO in Iraq is receiving them? names please. WHO in the American military was killed by Iranian weapons? Names please. What proof does the US have that Iran is trying to build a Nuclear Weapon and not just a power plant? Show the proof please. See, there is proof for NONE of this. All it is doing here is trying to instill FEAR in the American public to support another "pre-emptive war" but this time in Iran.

STOP THE MADNESS already. Show us PROOF or shut up!

The last "PROOF" was an Iranian missile found in Iraq but had ENGLISH letters all over it. Come on people...

Good points. I would not be surprised if Bush decides to expand the war to Iran before the elections. All his talk seems to be building up to it. Though many are opposed to any expansion of war, there are probably a greater number of people who are susceptible to fear mongering. McCain would have an easy win in the face of an all out Middle east war.
