Many Americans are feeling the squeeze from the rising cost of food. Staples such as rice, wheat, corn and milk cost more than ever.

And reports CBS News correspondent Priya David, those and other rising costs are hitting the middle class hard.

One manifestation: At food banks across the country, donations are slowing down, because, among other things, people who once donated are now in need of food themselves. So, donations are decreasing as the need for their services increases. One food bank official calls it "the perfect storm":

Separately, an 11-year-old Florida boy, Jack Davis, has done his part to address the problem in his state, spearheading efforts that recently resulted in a law making it less potentially problematic for restaurants and others to donate leftover fresh food to food banks. That's right: We said -- ELEVEN-years-old!:

I gotta applaud this young MAN, Jack Davis, for doing what the so-called adults in corporate America can''t - take care of others. Jack has the potential in life to be a force to be reckoned with, provided his parents continue to support and nurture his desire to help others.

My Dad started me in volunteering, as well as the rest of my family, around 15 years ago. I''m 28 now and have been recognized for community service that others in my high school graduating class wouldn''t acknowledge.

Jack, keep up the good work. You are going to go far in this world.

As a former fast-food restaurant manager, I can tell you that with a few more ingenious ideas to cut out waste, fast-food places are some of the more efficient businesses. Where I worked, food was weighed out and accounted for if it needed discarded. Somedays, there wasn''t much, if any, to throw away.

I am glad to see that there is someone who is trying to get the business community involved. We cannot rely on them to do it on their own - WE MUST NOT ONLY SET THE GOAL AND THE STANDARDS, BUT COMPLETE THE TASK AND SEND CORPORATE AMERICA THE BILL!

The only way to wake up big business is to speak to their pocketbooks because that it where their ears are - near their behinds.

You people would not believe what Wal-Mart forces us to throw away every single day. Thousands and thusands of dollars of food, and why may you ask? - just because. I personally one day had to throw away over $140 worth of pizza (perfectly good pizza) because it was near a discard date, not past but near. The bakery department discards all baked goods 2, yes 2 days before their discard date and yet, the food is absolutely perfect. I have seen full sheet cakes go into the dumpster for no reason.

Wal-Mart also discontinued its policy of reducing hot and other fresh cooked foods before expiration. This means that I have had to discard thousands of dollars of fresh, fully cooked rotisserie chicken - just because. All of the above says nothing about the numerous other items that I have seen go in the dumpster, without a care in the world. People are hurting right now and the one company on earth who could be more than just leading the way is letting humanity down.

I guess if I earned $400 billion a year, I wouldn''t care either. Instead, I earn $11 an hour and need another job. Sam Walton would probably sh*t himself if he only knew what his company was doing today.

I can''t faulty Wal-Mart exclusively - IF ALL OF YOU GREEDY, BLOOD-SUCKING SH*THEADS DIDN''T SPEND EVERY WAKING MOMENT SUING THE COMPANY OVER STUPID STUFF, THIS MIGHT NOT BE HAPPENING!!

President Bush, commander of a Super Power country with the Treasury and military and Congress at his beck and call, reads an interview in the paper about...

Jack Davis, 11 years old, average US citizen, not yet able to vote, helps aide the hungry.

Interviewer: "Mr. Davis, what is your secret?"

Jack Davis: "I am too young to realize that I am powerless, voiceless, and unable to help change the world down here at my level. I haven''t yet been told to go back to my cable sports, my video games, and girls to keep my mind off the real issues of helping my fellow man and making the world better than I found it."

Interviewer: Well, done Mr. Davis!

President Bush nods and says, "now there is someone who can make a difference." President Bush then invited Mr. Davis to Washington, gave him a tour of the White House where those important world-effecting decisions are made, and presented him with a medal, saying "You have accomplished more in your short years than greater men have accomplished in a lifetime."

Then Jack Davis had his picture taken next to the President, no wait, President Bush had his picture taken next to Mr. Davis.

We must not wait any longer. Mr. President, pull all troops from the Middle East and invade Canada before your term expires! This is the only way for us to survive the coming famine.

Thank you JACK DAVIS - This was an amazing feat - I have known about this obstacle for many years, dating back to when I worked in restaurants for a living. I was living in San Francisco where there are so many homeless people and I felt sick to my stomach with how much food was wasted. It never occurred to me to do something about it, thinking I couldn''t make a difference. Thank you for being the difference this world needs more of! You are destined for even more greatness - THANK YOU for being inspirational to the world! Best wishes...Thanks for fighting the good fight - Keep it up!!!
