Facing Hunger: Feeding America

Early Show, Affiliates Holding Food Drive Through May 10; Learn How You Can Donate!

  • The Early Show Hitting Home

Stories, video, resources and expert advice for homeowners facing foreclosure.

  • Interactive Eye On The Economy

In-depth features on U.S. markets, taxes, employment and the Federal Reserve.

(CBS)  The Early Show kicked off our very own 12-day food drive on Monday, April 28. We called it "Facing Hunger: Feeding America."

With food prices rising, the economy slumping and more and more American families struggling to get by, help is needed more than ever.

We'll be collecting non-perishable foods through May 10, when the nation's largest single-day food drive, "Stamp Out Hunger," takes place.

We invite you all to stop by our plaza at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. to donate, or go to your local CBS affiliate and local food banks.

Non-perishable foods needed include canned meat and fish, canned vegetables, fruits, juices, and soup, pasta and rice, peanut butter, and boxed goods (such as cereals).

SATURDAY, MAY 10

We're wrapping up the food drive, during which we took in a total of $1,467,527 in donations from corporations.

May 10 is also "Stamp Out Hunger Day." Leave a bag of non-perishable food next to your mailbox, and your letter carrier will deliver it to one of more than 10,000 food banks nationwide.

WEEK OF MAY 5

On Friday, the second-to-last day of The Early Show's twelve-day food drive, came word that the show had raised nearly $1.5 million in corporate donations alone for America's Second Harvest. Also Friday, Wal-Mart announced on the show that it was donating $500,000 to the America's Second Harvest Backpack Program, which gives food on weekends and other days off from school to kids who rely on free or reduced-price school lunches. On Thursday, the ConAgra Foods Foundationissued a "challenge grant" to America's Second Harvest and will be matching individual gifts made to the organization through the end of the month, up to $250,000. That equates to 5 million pounds of food, or 4 million meals for hungry children in the U.S. The matching grant doubles the impact and enables America's Second Harvest to feed more than 30,000 kids in need with three meals each day for the entire, 12-week summer. Donations can be made by going to the Second Harvest Web site. On Wednesday, Kraft donated more than 75,000 pounds of food valued at more than $100,000 -- enough food to fill two giant trucks. Among the items Kraft gave were Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, Capri Sun, Triscuits, and Kraft salad dressing. Kraft also presented a check for $250,000, bring the grand total of its contribution to $350,000. On Tuesday, Pampered Chef donated $100,000, and The Snack Factory gave $25,000 worth of its gourmet snack Pretzel Crisps. On Monday, Sweet Leaf Tea donated more than than 12,000 bottles of its all-natural ice teas and lemonades, worth $20,000. Ragu contributed $20,000 of its new Fresh & Simple Pouch line. And Pepsico gave $30,000 in its goods, including Quaker and Gatorade offerings.

WEEK OF APRIL 28
On Friday, Tyson Foods gave $30,000 pounds of frozen chicken products, which would sell for $65,000, to Greensburg. On Thursday, Johanna Foods donated 160,000 Ssips drink boxes valued at more than $30,000, and Vitamin Shoppe gave $25,000 in natural and organic foods. On Wednesday, the Wegmans supermarket chain donated $32,527 worth of non-perishable food to the cause. On Tuesday, Hidden Valley and Uncle Ben's each donated $10,000 of their products.

Those donated foods will be distributed by our partner in this food drive, America’s Second Harvest, which calls itself "The Nation’s Food Bank Network" and is the largest domestic hunger relief organization in the United States. Through its network of more than 200 food banks, America’s Second Harvest provides food and grocery products to more than 25 million Americans annually in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. You can help support their important efforts by visiting its Web site and making a donation to fight hunger nationwide, or locate your local food bank to support efforts in your town.

In addition, many CBS affiliates and stations owned-and-operated by CBS accepting those types of food donations.

I am a Town clerk in a small town in northern Maine. I have been watching this program ,and watching the food donations from all these large corporations pour in ..Wonderful..But What About the rest of the country.People do not understand that the Country is in trouble. The winter here this winter was harsh and our small food pantry went from 30 people to todays of 89 and more needing help all the time. People on fixed incomes had to make the choice between being warm , medications they may need , and eating. We had families living on macroni and spaghetti because it feeds more people cheaply. We noticed the map on TV that would benefit from the food drive. Many states were not on it. We were one of them. These people we are talking about using the food pantries are from all walks of life, people are having hard times feeding thier families. What will happen when gas hits $ 5 or $ 6 a gallon. Our minimum wage is $7.50,and most travel more than 80 miles a day to go to work. All I can say is everyone needs to help your neighbors, keep on giving to food pantry''s everywhere. This is like the depression times my grandmother talked about. Big corporations need to help more places, it''s people who made them big.

I am a person who wants to help people and having a positive impact in the world is essential in my work and life. I have become involved with a foundation that values helping others. This "pay it forward" foundation is called Nourish the Children (NTC), which is led by Lee Iacocca (the American business legend that saved Chrysler a while back), and is dedicated to feeding malnourished children around the world. I''ve made a personal challenge for myself to see how many people I can get involved with NTC through either a one-time contribution, or an ongoing involvement. FYI, one bag of food provides meals for one child for a full month. Nourish the Children was instrumental in helping those impacted by Katrina, Hurricane Charlie, and other devastating disasters in America.
I, personally, donate 1-2 bags/month as my way of "paying it forward". I believe that when you find the value in this project, you will be able to help me with this challenge.
If you would like to learn more about Nourish The Children, or make a donation, go to www.shariperry.my-ntc.com or give me a call 724-813-7019, or email me back at shari.perry@earthlink.net
I thank you in advance for taking your time to help children. Peace and blessings for all of you,
Shari Perry

I think it''s wonderful that places up north have taken the time to help people like myself that really need help, I currently live in Maryville, TN. and I am unable to get no help what so ever, I''m currently on Social Security Disability and raising my son alone, and Imagine, the State of Tennessee will only offer me $34. in food stamps a month and my S.S. check is only $764. a month, Somebody explain how 2 people are to live on that alone, Shame on Tennessee and the Corrupt officials of Blount County !

shame on our politicians... they need to join the majority of the country in trenches, everyday life struggles of the middle class too rich for help to poor to pay...issues not addressed in our great country: people are in need of food some going hungry in the USA??? lost jobs, lost homes, poor medical care and unable to afford medical care leave alone insurance for medical care. I have a son that graduates this year from high school and will begin college next year, he has worked hard and is an honor student, the premium for one year of health insurance coverage for our family of three EXCEEDS the TOTAL COST (room, board, tuition)for one full year in college. Now the economy is attacking college loans, the future of our country is the hands of this next generation who will be paying off national debt forever... our country spends billions rebuilding and feeding, providing medical care to the rest of the world, although we of the USA are more fortunate than many there is no excuse for anyone with ambition in our great country to be hungry, not provided excellent medical care, or provided a college education of choice or vocational education or training.
