(Weekly Standard)  This column was written by Fred Barnes

You only had to watch last night's Democratic presidential debate to understand why Hillary Clinton stays in the race. She's losing the nomination fight to Barack Obama in both the delegate count and the popular vote. But if bad things happen to her in a debate or while campaigning, she'll be no worse off. She'll still be losing. Her prospects of winning may be slightly more remote, but they aren't exactly bright now.

But if bad things happen to Obama, that's another story. In a debate, he's bound to be asked questions about matters he'd rather not be front and center in this campaign. And indeed those matters were dwelled on last night: his pastor Reverend Jeremiah Wright, his week-old putdown of small town voters, the American flag pin he no longer wears. No good can come to Obama when these issues dominate a nationally televised debate, as they did last night.

Sure, Clinton had a tough time dealing with her lie about having been under sniper fire in Bosnia in 1995. But so what? She's already suffered whatever hurt that episode may have caused her. For now, all Clinton has to do is stay in the race and hope Obama makes more rookie mistakes. No Clinton candidacy, no TV debates, far less pressure on Obama.

He made a few mistakes last night under questioning by Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos — but not egregious ones. He compared his association with a former left-wing bomber to his friendship with a Republican senator. He said he hadn't signed a questionnaire in which he advocated a ban on guns, though it's been widely reported that his signature was on the document. He said he might raise the capital gains tax even though a higher rate might reduce the revenue it takes in.

Obama insisted repeatedly that the debate — indeed, the entire presidential campaign — had gotten off the track whenever he was asked about unfriendly issues. These were a distraction from the real issues confronting America, he insisted, though once again he and Clinton essentially agreed on almost every single one of those supposedly more important issues when they did come up.

Clinton, given her desperate position, was free to say just about anything. She cited her record of "35 years of producing results," though what these results might be remains a mystery. She claimed to be "ready to be commander-in-chief," but her only evidence was that some retired generals have endorsed her.

Obama doesn't have to provide Clinton a national audience for these dubious claims. All he has to do is refuse any further debates, including one in North Carolina before the state's May 6 primary that CBS wants to stage. Clinton has already accepted.

This won't keep Obama entirely out of trouble. He made the disastrous comment about working class people clinging to guns and religion at a private gathering in the San Francisco mansion of the Gettys, classic limousine liberals. But declining further debates will reduce the risks he faces as the frontrunner.

He was lucky in San Francisco. His remarks were tape recorded, but there was no video. Imagine if there had been. His condescending remarks about the denizens of rural Pennsylvania would still be playing everywhere, not just on cable news.

Clinton wasn't as lucky. Her peaceful arrival in Bosnia with no snipers around was videotaped for all to see. And no doubt anyone likely to vote this year did.

This may be the time of the Anti-Christ, but do you want to be on the list of people who voted for him?

Posted by olandug at 01:39 PM

Hehe do you realize you''re an absolute freak? :)

WHERE IS BIN LADEN? That has really been the only relevant question that needs asking since the invasion of Afghanistan.

Seven years of war. Civil rights breached by our commander in chief. Internationally recognized torture sanctioned by the White House. Two invaded and currently occupied countries. Hundreds of thousands dead, including OVER 4000 American soldiers. Billions of our tax dollars spent, and yes, are still being spent to this very moment.

Iraq, which had NOTHING to do with 9/11, is now an occupied country which will implode when we get out of it, whether that happens one, two, ten or five hundred years from now. A society that CHOOSES to be ruled by religion cannot become a democracy; it can only be a theocracy with voting cards.

Bin Laden still lives. The mastermind of 9/11 still walks free.

The one, simple word for this is: failure. No amount of deception, indignation or wailing by republicons can change these facts.

Failure of Bush. Failure of Cheney. Failure of the republicans.

Time for a change.

ROTFLMAO at olandug''s "Anti-Christ" comment....are you an old bitter person from the Midwest clinging to your White church''s message?

1. As First Lady, Hillary assumed authority over healthcare reform, a process that cost the taxpayers over $13 million. she told both Bill Bradley and Pat Moynihan, key votes needed to pass her legislation, that she would "demonize" anyone who opposed it. But it was opposed; she couldn''t even get it to a vote in a Congress controlled by her own party. (And in the next election, her party lost control of both the House and Senate.
2. Hillary assumed authority over selecting a female attorney general. Her first two recommendations (Zoe Baird and Kimba Wood) were forced to withdraw their names from consideration, and then she chose Janet Reno. Janet Reno has since been described by Bill himself as "my worst mistake."
3. Hillary recommended Lani Guanier to head the Civil Rights Commission. When Guanier''s radical views became known, she had to withdraw her name.
4. Hillary recommended her former law partners, Web Hubbell, Vince Foster, and William Kennedy for positions in the Justice Department, White House staff, and the Treasury, respectively. Hubbell was later imprisoned; Foster "committed suicide," and Kennedy was forced to resign.

6. In order to open "slots" in the White House for her friends, the Harry Thomasons (to whom millions of dollars in travel contracts could be awarded), Hillary had the entire staff of the White House Travel Office fired; they were reported to the FBI for "gross mismanagement" and their reputations ruined. After a 30-month investigation, only one, Billy Dale, was charged with a crime - mixing personal money with White House funds when he cashed checks. The jury acquitted him in less than two hours.
7. Another of Hillary''s assumed duties was directing the "bimgo eruption squad" and scandal defense; urging her husband not to settle the Paula Jones lawsuit; refusing to release the Whitewater documents, which led to the appointment of Ken Starr as Special Prosecutor after $80 million of taxpayer money was spent. Starr''s investigation led to Monica Lewinsky, which led to Bill lying about and later admitting his affairs.
---- Then they had to settle with Paula Jones after all.
---- And Bill lost his law license for lying to the grand jury.
--- And Bill was impeached by the House.
--- And Hillary almost got herself indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice (she avoided it mostly because she repeated, "I do not recall," "I have no recollection," and "I don''t know" 56 times under oath).

8. Hillary accepted the traditional First Lady''s role of decorator of the White House at Christmas, but in a unique Hillary way. In 1994, for example, the First Lady''s Tree in the Blue Room (the focal point each year) was decorated with drug paraphernalia, *** toys, and pornographic ornaments, all personally approved by Hillary as the invited artists'' depictions of the theme, "The Twelve Days of Christmas."
-- Hillary wrote "It Takes a Village," demonstrating her Socialist viewpoint.
-- Hillary decided to seek election to the Senate in a state she had never lived in. Her husband pardoned FALN terrorists in order to get Latino support and the New Square Hassidim to get Jewish support. Hillary also had Bill pardon her brother''s clients, for a small fee, to get financial support.
-- Then Hillary left the White House, but later had to return $200,000 in White House furniture, china, and artwork she had stolen.
-- In the campaign for the Senate, Hillary played the "woman card" by portraying her opponent (Lazio) as a bully picking on her.
-- Hillary''s husband further protected her by asking the National Archives to withhold from the public until 2012 many records of their time in the White House, including much of Hillary''s correspondence and her calendars. (There are ongoing lawsuits to force the release of those records.)

-- As the junior Senator from New York, Hillary has passed no major legislation. She has deferred to the senior Senator (Schumer) to tend to the needs of New Yorkers, even on the hot issue of medical problems of workers involved in the cleanup of Ground Zero after 9/11.
-- Hillary''s one notable vote, supporting the plan to invade Iraq, she has since disavowed.

No Anti-Christ thoughts here, but certainly Hillary is an Anti-American. She''s been on a tear for years to ruin this country. She sees an opportunity to take over from the Shrub because the USA doesn''t have far to go to die if she can get her evil hands in the White House.

Obama has cried out ONLY because he KNOWS he LOST the debate, which DID ask questions about IMPORTANT issues such as Capital Gains tax(where Obama said he would raise them, even after Gibson pointed out repeatably that raising Capital Gains Tax DOESN''T CREATE MORE TAX REVENUE for the government), Iraq(and withdrawing troops), raising the tax for the working class(where Obama said he would).

Hillary is the only one with the UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE PROGRAM that is needed to bring our country out of 3rd world status. "The United States is the only wealthy, industrialized nation that does not provide universal health care." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care

I watched the debate and I thought Obama SHOULD have to answer to the issues he was presented with. No one else but Obama created his association (for over 20 years) with a racist and bigot, no one else but Obama specifically said "I will not wear that, uh, pin(the American Flag)". No one else but Obama would not put his hand on his heart during the playing of our National Anthem(even though US Code says he should as a Gov. employee). No one else but Obama says "For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of the US".
No one else but Obama gave WEAK and UNSATISFYING answers to the tough questions previously mentioned.

Obama MUST have known that these controversial issues would come back to haunt him, he can''t possible be that naive. He should have had better answers and been able to make good of the situation. Instead, Obama is once again trying to DIVERT our attention to some OTHER problems, this is the game he plays whenever he does not have a REAL ANSWER to a problem. This is no leader, this is a SHAMMER and a LIAR.

The debate moderators were merely asking the questions that were posed by regular citizens.

Hillary Clinton also got the sniper question thrown at her, to which she gave a reasonable answer and hasn''t been crying about it since.

Obama''s baggage is a bit more complex and voters seem to resist delving into these multi layered stories, e.g., Rezko, the disqualification of Obama''s state senate opponents, the Auchi story, etc. But we can''t afford the luxury of being "dumbed down" just because we don''t want to consider these multi-detailed stories. We''ve given the press carte blanche to take themselves off the hook by not following up on these complex stories and because of that, they appear to be protecting Obama in addition to staying away from stories that are important but which are also stories we don''t care to read. Follow the money.

Obama did not give the finger to anyone. That is garbage talk. Also, Obama tried to move the discussion away from the negative, trivial questions that were put to both of them. Not just to him. Why is there no clear and balanced coverage? Its all spin talk and counter spin. No one seeks meaningful truth, common sense and real solutions to the massive problems America has at home and abroad (other than Obama in my opinion). May the American media, power structure and many of its "leading" people shape up to the challenges instead of playing this coy game. The press parrots what is said and spins things further, neglecting to take its investigative journalism role seriously. Its tabloid country instead. A symptom of the many ills of the nation. Massive change is indeed needed in America. The existing power politics is misguided, misleading, self serving and mistaken.

The title of this article could have easily been rewritten to "Hillary Overwhelmingly Wins the Debate on April 16th".

Hillary has everything to loose, shame on you for mocking that.

Hillary is a fighter, and it takes more than cheap "worship Obama(the unfit one)" reporting to take her out.

Talk about destroying the party, the Obama-Cultists and the Media-For-Obama-Can-Do-No-Wrong-foundation are the ones that are doing it.

If Barack Obama was such a stellar candidate, why has he not won the contest by a LANDSLIDE?

Get your head out of the clouds and look at the real issues, Barack is NOT the CLEAR winner. Barack is simply trying to FOOL America long enough to vie himself into the General Election. And if he succeeds, the GOP is going to eat him for breakfast and at least HALF of Democrats may vote against him.

The patterns have been clear, and will only continue to be proven, Barack Obama is a WEAK candidate. Don''t waste your vote on a Loser!

Barack is such a hypocrite, he says he runs a candidacy for hope and change and unity and bears and rangers being friends and yet he is traveling around the country saying "Hillary is throwing a kitchen sink, and dishes, and the buffet at me". What? "Kitchen sink and dishes?" What is this supposed to mean? Is this another "bitter" comment?

Barack Obama doesn''t care about the working class voter, he aims to raise taxes for them, not provide them with a UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE PROGRAM, and possibly take away their rights to own guns and worship who they want.

Obama has every reason to be questioned about his patriotism. He may be as patriotic as you and I, but his cumulative actions suggest the possibility of otherwise. Thus the need for a thorough reckoning.

For example:

Okay, Ames planted his last terrorist bomb 38 years ago, but he was unrepentant as of 9/11 and Obama went to his home for a fundraiser since then. (I can''t remember the last time I knowingly went to a terrorist''s home for tea and cookies.)

Given the no-reporters and no cameras restrictions on the ill-fated San Francisco bashing of PA rural voters, one has to wonder if Obama meant what he said or, alternatively, if he is merely inarticulate in the extreme.

Flag lapel pins are, admittedly, not a big deal. But, refusing to wear one is, at least, worthy of question.

Not crossing one''s heart with hand during the National Anthem is also, perhaps, not a big deal, but why defy the norms?

Obama''s wife, until her husband became a candidate for President, was not proud to be an American. I''m proud, and I''m 15 millionith on the list.

"The United States is the only wealthy, industrialized nation that does not provide universal health care."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care

People that are against Universal Healthcare are probably:
Working as an insurance company exec and are paid a lot of money by "Profiting" from denying people care that are dying.
Uninformed to the fact that the US is the only modern country that doesn''t take care of its people with a Universal Healthcare program.
Don''t realize that having Universal Healthcare will boost our economy and make things better for the working class.
Universal Healthcare will lead to other "for the people" changes(that other countries already know about), such as fewer overtime hours, more focus on family, and "Preventing" health problems as opposed to reporting to the Emergency room only to find out it''s too late.

Perhaps since Barack doesn''t care for our flag, he can replace it while he''s president.

Also, he could have it removed from our funeral processes for those who have paid the ultimate price for our country and way of life.
http://www.flags.com/faqdesk_info.html?faqPath=3&faqdesk_id=13

Perhaps Barack can also make a parking lot out of Arlington national cemetery because all those who lie there are part of the "old" ways that need "change".

Don''t fall for Baracks lies, you are better and smarter people than this.

Hillary is the one that will help the country, because she cares about America.

I would have liked to hear these questions asked,
"Sen. Clinton, it''s widely held that you are untrustworthy, what can you say to convince people that they can believe you?"

"Sen Clinton, your husband''s administration had more claims of corruption as well as successful legal actions taken against it than any other administration in the history of the USA. What would you do different to convince Americans that the Clintons aren''t bald faced crooks?"

"Sen Clinton, you claim that your experience comes from being the First Lady for eight years. What can you say about the many failures that you were charged with? Such as the failed healthcare reform, your recommendations of Zoe Baird and Kimba Wood who were forced to withdraw their names from consideration, and then you chose Janet Reno. Janet Reno has since been described by Bill himself as "my worst mistake."

"Sen Clinton, EVERYONE knows that you are an elitist that believes America somehow "owes" you the Presidency. What do you say to those that see through your attacks on your own party that are causing many to choose McCain over anything Democrat?"

"Finally, Sen Clinton, America is tired of the Clinton antics, when will you permanently go away and never come back? We REALLY want to know!"

"Sen Clinton, why did you refuse to release the Whitewater papers? Your secrecy over your business dealings led to the appointment of Ken Starr as Special Prosecutor (who was a Democrat favorite) His investigation led to Monica Lewinsky, which led to Bill lying about and later admitting his affairs. I agree this is a serious question, if legitimate. But what does it mean? Would a statistical analysis across various administrations show these occurrences of an official being imprisoned, dying by suicide, resigning a post are somehow significant? On the other hand, how many presidential candidates have had the sort of association that Obama has had with Rev. Wright?

I am not sure I would say that Wright, the pin, Rezko, bitter, finally proud, weathermen, are mistakes at all. To suggest that means that Barack wishes he had never known those people or said what he said. He isn''t sorry he chose Wright as his mentor regardless of what the pastor says each week. He might regret being a pal of Rezko right about now, but still he got the house and he wouldn''t trade that I would bet. He doesn''t like the idea that wearing a flag pin denotes a special feeling for the US. He only serves on a board with a member of the weathermen and so maybe Barack is in the habit of sitting on boards without knowing who else is serving with him. He certainly can''t be mad at this wife for finally be proud to live in the US now that Barack is a presidential candidate. Nope, I really don''t think these issues were in error at all. I think these incidents frame the man. If you like what you see vote for him. If you don''t, look elsewhere. It really is that simple.

Should we worship Obama like God with no faults? So untouchable that no one should dare to raise any question about him? Obama and his supporters view anybody undecided or supporting other candidates with contempt and anger. They are the ones with real antipathy to people not like them. No candidate''s perfect, no human''s perfect. But it''s legitimate to examine Obama if it''s ok to ask Chelsea question about Monica. They already so bitter about criticism now, imagine when Obama in the white house what kind of contempt towards criticism they would have. That''s certainly not the way to win skeptics over, and not fitting his attempt to project himself as a hopeful uniter.

The heading is probably right, Hillary "sniper-fire" Clinton has nothing to lose; she tucked away at least $5 Million in the pockets of her super delagates and other high profile campaign contractors. To the public it will look like she lost the $5 million she loaned her campaign, but no one will know that she will be getting it back from the places she put them away (if not already got them back). This is becoming such a joke that people are going to stay away from the poles in droves thus handing the election to McCain. As for Hillary..By God, if she can''t have it she''ll make dam sure that Obama doesn''t get it. Great politics democrats. Keep up the good work. And I suggest you all take a look at McCain''s economic policies. They make Bushes look good.

Of course Clinton has nothing to lose since a third Clinton term is illegal and violates the spirit of what the 2 term limit Law intended which is to prevent political corruption and too much political influence by one family! Switching the candidate to a former Presidents wife is a cute way around that 2 term limit Law! This is what people complain about when arguing about following the letter of a Law and understanding the "original intent" of a Law. It seems almost all politicians are Lawyers these days so they understand exactly what I''m talking about. In an "original intent" context, a third Clinton Presidential term is illegal in incarnation!

With this debate, ABC has become a poster child for all that is wrong with network TV news %u2013 pandering to base fears that can easily be dismissed with the smallest attention to facts. For example, Ayers'' association with Obama was clearly trivial as shown by this Fact-check

Also, Wright''s most inflammatory words were not even his own - they were quotes fron Ambassador Peck:

Meanwhile, real information about the candidates goes ignored, such as Obama''s 800+ bills in Illinois legislature including the only successful passage of health care reform by the three candidates

Or his US senate bills on WW threat reduction, government ethics, and immigration reform that he co-sponsored with Senator Lugar, Coburn and and Hagel.

There is a reason that every major Pensylvania newspaper is endorsing Obama - because they don''t get their facts from TV gossip.

I have been a lifelong Democrat. Never wanted to support the repubs. There have been some repubs that have served the country well but certainly not this current bunch. But I just changed my registration from democrat to independent. I no longer care to be associated with any party. Watching the democrats self destruct is very painful for me. I have never seen an assault on a candidate like the one being thrown at Obama. But at this point my own party members have convinced me that they do not deserve my support. Hillary has done an excellent job on Obama and should be proud that she has handed everything to McCain. I still won''t vote for John but I hope he turns out to be better than what we have had for the past 7 plus years. I guess we''ll see.

If Clinton loses the nomination and her scorched earth campaign causes Obama to lose the election she can point and say *see I told you so*.

"North Carolina before the state''s May 6 primary that CBS wants to stage. Clinton has already accepted."

I see why she would accept this debate "CBS" will back her again with their b.s.

Sen. Clinton and Sen. McCain openly support each other, in fact if Sen. Obama wins the Democratic nomination the McCain campaign has already said it will apply the Clinton campaign strategy and attacks against Sen. Obama since they are working so well! The only question now is did the McCain campaign send Clinton a thank you card.

Better that bad things happen to Obama now (see story) than to happen when the Republicans get a hold of him. Don''t forget, as another Democrat, Hillary can''t bring up anything NEW on Obama, but the Republicans can and will.

truth...You have a good point. The republicans will manage to turn Obama into Osama ben Laden before they get through with him. And they''ll probably be able to place him as a member of that Texas cult of pedophiles. However, all Hillary''s camp has to do is have someone follow Obama around with a hidden tape recorder and they''ll be able to get all kinds of fresh meat. Give a spin doctor a tape and a knife and he can work miracles. Remember it''s a long time till the convention.
