(CBS)  This story was written by CBSNews.com's Tucker Reals in London, and Sami Yousafzai, reporting from Peshawar, Pakistan.

A senior Taliban commander who became a hero to Islamic militants for his role in shooting down a U.S. helicopter in 2005, killing all 16 special forces troops aboard, has been killed by Pakistani security forces, officials and Taliban militants tell CBS News.

Mullah Ismail, a notorious Taliban commander from the Afghan province of Kunar, was killed in a shootout with Pakistani police as he traveled with a kidnapped trader, a local police officer said Wednesday. He was apparently on his way into the lawless Northwest Frontier Province along the Afghan border.

Officer Mukarma Khan said Ismail, also known as Mullah Ahmad Shah, had kidnapped the trader from a camp for Afghan refugees in Pakistan and was trying to transport him back to the border when he failed to stop at the checkpoint. He apparently opened fire on the police and was killed in the following exchange of gunfire.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the death of the key commander and said he was a prominent Taliban figure in the area.

Abdul Jalal Jalal, chief of police in Afghanistan's Kunar province, where Ismail was based, told CBS News that he was also aware about the militant's death in Pakistan. He described him as the "most wanted terrorist in Kunar province."

A Taliban sub-commander in Kunar province, who spoke on condition of anonymity, would not confirm the killing. But he told CBS News Ismail's death "would be a full-scale blow." He praised Ismail for the shooting down of the Chinook in 2005.

Ismail was also said to be a key facilitator of al Qaeda militants in the region - many of whom come from outside southeast Asia and do not speak the local languages. According to Taliban sources, Osama bin Laden personally honored Ismail's authority in the area after the Chinook attack in a letter sent through an intermediary.

Police chief Jalal said Ismail and the militants under his command were behind many attacks on NATO, U.S. and Afghan forces in the northeastern part of Afghanistan.

Ismail became a hero for al Qaeda and the Taliban after his group hit a U.S. Navy MH-47 Chinook helicopter in late June 2005, apparently with a shoulder-fired rocket. The helicopter was one of four aircraft ferrying special forces into the area on a reconnaissance mission.

It was considered a lucky shot from an inaccurate weapon; but it left eight Navy SEALs and eight Army air crew from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment dead. Read report from June 30, 2005.

It was the deadliest single attack on U.S. troops in Afghanistan since the invasion to topple the Taliban in 2001.

The Chinook was shot down as it ferried troops into the region to search for four Navy SEALs who had gone missing in the area in late June. Three of the men were found dead, but one, who was wounded, managed to escape - read report from July 3, 2005 - to a local home, where he was hidden from the Taliban and eventually rescued by U.S. forces.

On Wednesday, Afghan shepherd Gulab Khan, who says he's the one who saved the life of the only surviving SEAL, told CBS News that Mullah Ismail attacked his village the day after the helicopter was shot down, searching for any survivors.

Khan said he protected the SEAL, but his actions brought death threats from Ismail and his militants, which prompted the shepherd to relocate his entire family to the provincial capital. He described Ismail as the most powerful militant in Kunar province.

If we know where their camps are located, why then can we not release one of those MOAB''s via parachute and vaporize the entire gathering? Massive Ordnance Air Burst, I think it is called, will kill any living thing within a quarter mile of the explosion. Those who take note will soon distance themselves from any gathering of terrorists, I would think. If not, too bad. New scripture should read: "where 3 or more gather in the name of terrorism, MOAB shall come".

Pakistan with American assistance flew thousands of Arab fighters out of Afghanistan when the Taliban Regime fell...Now, they''ve managed to kill a trick shooting Talibani...will this close the circus? Kidnapping a trader and trying to run through a police barricade doesn''t sound like an enterprise that a ''high level'' leader would be undertaking.

Ya Boy, that shows how dumb or bullet proof he thought he was. It was not a trader he was kidnapping but a traitor. His last words were "Oh great Allah, shield me from the infidels bulleee......" Allah had better plans for this miserable pig in human body. Down to Satan he goes with all his terrorist and murderous kind. Victory for Allah!

Most civilian deaths have been caused by Alqeda in Iraq or rival factions...not by the US or coalition forces. Your 1 million figure is also highy exagerated....libtard.

al Qaeda is a US asset and we brought them to Iraq... We flew their troops out when we overthrew the Taliban Regime and installed the Narco-Oil-Regime in Kabul...we have used them in Bosnia and in Kosovo we protected the al Qaeda brother of al Qaeda #2, al Zawahiri, in his KLA terrorist camp.

We are using the "Dirty War" tactics used in Argentina and Algeria...Italy with OPERATION GLADIO and other places...like Ireland.

The attacks against civilians only benefit the US as it tends to make Americans believe that we are needed there to ''protect'' Iraqis. We saw Phil Berg leave official American custody in Iraq and immediately end up in the hands of the unofficial American custody of al Qaeda...where he was taken by fat guys wearing jewelry to his beheading video in an Abu Ghraib-like background complete with English voices in the background.

The wicked are but for a moment but the righteous shall inherit the earth. Thank you Pakistan for saving hundreds of innocent bystanders from suicidally deceived murderers like this most wanted terrorist and senior Taliban commander. Less heroin will flow in the streets now that this drug terrorist is gone. And the kidnapped worker he had with not be tortured now.

Rebuttal:

Libh8er are another conservative, out of many on these boards, who has chosen to fight a safe enemy, his fellow countrymen, an "enemy" that can''t hurt him, from behind the safety of his keyboard (for that added bit of protection).

Meanwhile, US troops made up of self-sacrificing Americans from all political and cultural walks of life, very much including those liberals that Libh8er so despises, have gone to Afghanistan as well as Iraq to actually fight the real war, dodging real enemy bullets. These troops do so to maintain the freedoms of this country, to keep the freedoms for people like Libh8er so he can continue to trash fellow Americans from behind the anonymity of his keyboard in safety.

Thing is...I didn''t know the right to hate was one of the freedoms our troops are fighting and dying for.

I propose that these words of Libh8er may be carved into one of the new 4000 grave headstones risen since the War on Terror started, so that the parents of these dead soldiers can see what their kids died for, died so that people like Libh8er can post hateful, pointless, and untrue comments about fellow citizens here, over political affiliation.

Signed, a liberal that served.

notblue, respectfully. If you read your post, it is you who has come on these boards and made vague unsubstantiated generalizations about liberals.

You have heard me say America needs conservatives for a fair and balanced government. America doesn''t need conservatives like Bush/Cheney/Rove/Gonzales that do your party horrible injustice.

And I don''t blame them for everything. I of course don''t blame Bush for hurricanes but I sure as helll do regarding the fact that we have spent more US taxpayer dollars on reconstructing Iraq than New Orleans.

I do believe you are a concerned conservative, but if you had any real interest in politics, you would try saving your own party from the criminals that have stolen it from you.

We liberals have enough to do, fighting against the spread of war, rabid over-development and loss of the environment, polluted drinking water and climate change, dismantling of civil liberties, and increase in the plight of America''s poor. The entire planet no longer has time for these stupid Limbaugh games.

And notblue, if you conservatives can''t even clean up your own party and politics, you aren''t qualified to tell liberals what''s wrong with theirs.

Again, respectfully.

Secondly, after my hip replacement which happened after a college football injury I still tried after graduation to enlist but could not pass the meps physical, however my brother after college enlisted in the marine corp, spent time in combat in Panama and gulf war 1. He is forced recon and eod. Notblue and I have engaged several times over the course of the Bush Administration''s reign. He is as staunch a detractor of liberals as I am defender. LOL.

(I still like him though. He comes up with some great stuff at times.)

The reason I try to be respectful is because between Rush Limbaugh''s hate retoric being smeared across America like rancid butter and Bush''s neglect of this country in his race for some vague romantic idea of Victory in war lies half an entire nation of decent hard-working Repulicans that have been sold WAY down the road by these two. It is to them, and I include notblue in this, that I give my respect.

If We, the People ever plan to mend this nation once Bush is gone and once more become One Nation, Under God like our money sez, we have got to get back to giving one another a little respect.

My point is, Iraq is the size of California; naturally, if you are going to rebuild a country, it will cost more than a city.

Lousiana and New Orleans, three years later, should be the ones blamed for not rebuilding, or at least deciding what they will and what they will not rebuild of the city.

"The sad thing is that dog''''s hole probably really believes this. Every American is against terrorism"

I believe it because it is patently obvious that liberals would gladly, eagerly - yes desperately yearn for ANY setback for the United States while a Republican occupies the White House - whether that be a successful terrorist attack or an economic downturn - so that they can use it as leverage against the opposition party...

In fact, just observe whenever any good news or progress gets reported (a rarity from the liberal mass media) - you can literally see, read & feel liberals start to squirm.... they LOATHE any success against this nation''s enemies while it can in any way be attributed to conservative lead efforts...

That is why liberals are traitors to this great nation - who they have backstabbed at every opportunity since the late 1940s...

Still higher than yours. MSEE BTW! Just tired of your assumptions. Let''s see Ronnie the R etard refused to go after the bombers of the Marine barracks so by your definition he''s an enemy apologist. I wanted to go after the b astards. I would have blown up every terrorist camp in the ME on 9/12 with low yield thermonuclear devices. I don''t believe in attacking those however that did not attack us (Iraq). We have matched Hitler''s march into Poland in ''39 for preemptive BS. A course I might add that was advocated by a group of DRAFT DODGERS from Viet Nam (Iraq)!!!

"It should be obvious that liberals hate facist fanatical religous groups "

First - liberals ARE a fascist fanatical group - just try disagreeing with them some time - or as they would say, ''hating''...

And yes, liberals DO hate Christians - And many hate Israeli Jews - that much they''ve repeatedly made obvious...

Can''t say as I''ve heard them come out against Muslims much - heaven''s no - that''d be BIGOTRY - that''d be ''hate''...

In fact, I''d say liberals are member of the godless church of liberalism - it''s a dogma, a cult if you will... and it''s every bit as dangerous as radical Islam with whom they have allied themselves in a fight against Bush...

Your message bashing Bush and blaming him for all the trouble in the world is typical of blinded libs. Not once in your statement di you blame the Islamic extremists for the problems you feel are unfixable. This is the problem and a major cause of didvide in this country. Just once it would be great to here blame go to the Jihadists instead of fellow Americans.
