Obama's comment, which the Illinois senator made during a San Francisco fundraiser last week, set off an exchange of insults between the final contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination as they vie for blue-collar support in the state's April 22 primary. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has criticized the comment as “elitist,” while Obama has mocked the New York senator's own recent emphasis on support for gun owners' rights.
In interviews Monday in Pennsylvania communities like the ones to which Obama referred, Democrats on both sides of the race were divided over the controversy.
“It's so difficult to watch every word,” said Mary Ellen Matunis, a Clinton backer from Shenandoah.
“I was not offended,” she said. “Poor choice of words, but I think it was just misspoken.”
Matunis, 56, is a retired teacher in this central Pennsylvania borough of barely 5,000 residents that was once a boom town of the anthracite coal industry. But that industry has been on the decline for longer than most residents have been alive, and the textile factories that followed are gone too.
Dennis Yezulinas, another Clinton supporter in Shenandoah, said he is more offended by the rhetorical fight that followed Obama's comment than by the remark itself.
“Not just for the good of the Democratic Party, but for the good of the country, they need to make it less contentious,” said Yezulinas, a former state prison guard who has been laid off from a plant that manufactures doors in a neighboring town.
In the southeastern Pennsylvania community of Coatesville - a once booming steel city outside of Philadelphia that now has empty storefronts downtown - two Clinton supporters sharing a meal at a Coatesville restaurant said they felt Obama was wrong to stereotype small-town voters.
“It's like we're not smart enough to understand what the politicians are saying. It's an insult to our intelligence,” said Susan Kamerdze, 50.
Mike Zemacke, 57, said that, while Coatesville has seen better days, he's not bitter. He said he used to work as a press operator before a disability led him to retirement.
“I'm just frustrated,” he said. “I used to live a lot better than this.”
At another Coatesville eatery, lifelong resident Armon Richardson said he remains firmly committed to Obama.
“We're getting in the silly season,” said Richardson, 33, a computer analyst. “It's being overanalyzed.”
In Pottsville, a city south of Shenandoah that also thrived during the coal boom and is now known as the home of Yuengling beer, coffeehouse owner Mary Ann Price, 56, said she is undecided about which candidate will get her vote in the primary, but that Obama's remarks won't affect her decision. She said she is more concerned about U.S. standing in the international community.
“The whole world hates us, and with good reason,” she said.
Mike McGeever, 47, a Clinton backer who works for a neighborhood revitalization agency in Pottsville, called Obama's comment “uninformed, rather than elitist.”
“To throw a blanket indictment out there against the people in this area, it is definitely patronizing,” he said.
Truck salesman Bob Bildheiser, 49, said he is tentatively supporting Obama and that he agreed with the point that Obama was trying to make about the nation's economic problems.
“The people are bitter about the economy, about jobs, about the gas prices. It's terrible,” he said.
At the California event, Obama said some small-town voters bitter about their economic circumstances “cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
Clinton, who polls show still leading in the Pennsylvania primary, criticized the comment as “elitist and divisive,” and suggested that it could cost Democrats the presidency if Obama were the nominee. Obama said he was disappointed by Clinton's criticism and questioned her opposition to the NAFTA free-trade agreement that some voters believe eliminated thousands of U.S. jobs

- Didn''t Senator Obama say in the debate April 16, 2008 that he would raise taxes on people who make over $97,000.00 and up to $200,000.00 by raising the amount of their income that is subject to the FICA tax? That is a big tax increase for many middle class people.

- BLACKSPIRIT3 - Hillary Clinton is running.
She has a impeccable record, Everyone Knows how hard she works. How much she loves this country, How much she has done for the people. Even Teddy Kennedy knows and has stated it.
Now Mr Obama his voting record is mostly Present when is there, saying. "I am here and I do not care." takes the pay check anyhow.
With his time in the Senate, when he could of been doing some of this stuff he says he wants to do, he failed to do anything, He was in the perfect spot to actually do something. He Choose not to.
Hi Best Friends are like something out of mafia story book. Rezko, whom he lied about so many, many times. first he did not know him, then he knew him as a fund raiser. Then he knew him as a fund raiser who was politically active, whom he attend his fund raisers, but rezko only gave him 20k. Then rezko helped him buy his house, since rezko had no money, he tool money from Aucci and used that, Bone head idea Obama said. then he gave him no more than 60k, then it grew to 250k and rezko was a friend for 18 years, Then rezko offered him a job while he was in college. Then he worked for him doing some legal stuff.
Goodness, each step clearing up a lie, The whole truth is not all out about rezko, so more lies to come. - Reply to this comment

- As you''re all painfully aware, today is Tax Day--that time of year when Americans are reminded that while we might be constrained to work within a household budget, the U.S. Congress is already thinking of creative ways to spend our money or extract more of it. The latest example comes from House Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) whose bill, the "Taxpayer Assistance and Simplification Act" (H.R. 5719), is scheduled for a vote this week. Ironically, the only assistance his legislation offers is to put a greater tax burden on the seven million Americans who have Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). Under HSAs, participants can set aside their own money and invest it. If they use that money for medical purposes, members aren''t required to pay taxes on their account. Rangel''s H.R. 5719 would force HSA members to wade through piles of paperwork, which, if filled out incorrectly, would result in a hefty fine. Chairman Rangel (who has never met a tax hike he didn''t like) sees this bill as an opportunity to create more unnecessary government bureaucracy in pursuit of more tax dollars. Unfortunately, this is just the beginning of tax hikes to come as Rangel and the Democratic majority plan on letting the Bush tax cuts expire. Without permanent tax relief, the average family will be paying an extra $3,500 every year to Uncle Sam.
And along comes an Oreo who advocates bigger government intervention into your lives and you all bend your knees in a show of reverence. - Reply to this comment

- The fact that this non-issue continues to be discussed provides a clear snapshot into just how desperate the Clinton Campaign is.
She''s losing badly and is only hanging around trying to bring down Obama to a level that will allow her to get the nomination. What a great attribute - "I''m nothing to write home about, but look at him", what higher praise for a potential President - She''''s always has been, and always will be a loser! She is severely hampering the chances of the Democratic party in the national election - the only good news is that as she does this she is wearing out her welcome badly so we will never have to go through this with her again. - Reply to this comment
- Barack should break the tie for Pennsylvanians by urging Hillary to disclose the donor list of her shill 527 set up by the Godfather of 527''s Harold Ickes right after he came on board to help her thwart campaign finance laws during her campaign''s time of financial and managerial crisis.
The list must not look good for Clinton if the American Leadership Project is refusing to release the donor list . . . the Saudis, the Columbians and the Chinese could be shoring up her finances for all we know . . . - Reply to this comment

At no time in history have you and I had such ready access to information. We are on the cutting edge of what is happening. It is only reasonable to think "Don''t our elected Officials know about Obama''s bad company? I hope so. In fact I would like to think so, because so much is riding in the balance.
Personally I have no affinity for any candidate. For such resposible issues I refuse to become personally involved with candidates. These people are professional politicians. They assume their duties and make decisions with no regard individual people. Their challenge is the safety and welfare of all citizens. At least thats the way it is supposed to be.
I wish you well in this amazing Election season. Please don''t become involved with the drama. Stick to the impersonal facts. There lies your decision. - Reply to this comment
- Andrew McCarthy published in the National review in March an opinion called "The Bad Company of Barack Obama". On this cbsnews site go to opinions and scrol down to the afore mentioned title.
After reading I was shocked. First I thought Opinion? Hmmmm... Then I did what McCarthy did. I dug into the facts. His opinion is right on the money. Barack followers should especially read this collection of facts. I will not subordinate the Constitution for some so-called higher ideal.
Those of you who are born in this country like me have this blind spot in our minds which has no understandig of a life style outside this country. In fact we are the very embodyment of a society made possible through an environment outlined in the Constitution.
It is possible some of us feel guilty and hate what our government represents, but remember the government is not nessecarily reflective of the Constitution. The Constitution is the only real heritage we have. No place on Earth is quite like our home. That is why you must weigh carefully all information available when considering your candidate.
McCarthy is just one finder of facts out there. What he has found out about Obama is fact. You can pretend such information is not true, but you are only kidding yourselves. These people have a serious agenda in process and all the Obama groupies are collateral damage. If you can''t stand Hillary vote for McCain, but vote.

- Barack Obama was 100% correct in what he said. Some people of course twist his words and meaning into a cheap shot attack on him by pretending his comments were elitist, but they''re people who didn''t like him anyway and were never going to vote for him. The tiny tiny tiny handful of people who actually were offend are delusional.

Some people in Pennsylvania do cling to religion because it''''s an important part of their spirtual lives. Others don''''t.
Some people in Pennsylvania do have anti-trade or anti-immigration positions because they or someone they know has lost a job to an immigrant or overseas. Others don''''t.
Some people in Pennsylvania do feel antipathy towards people who aren''t like them because they lack maturity. Others don''''t.
