(AP)  An elementary-school event in which kids were encouraged to dress as members of the opposite gender drew the ire of a Christian radio group, whose angry broadcast prompted outraged calls to the district office.

Students at Pineview Elementary had been dressing in costume all last week as part of an annual school tradition called Wacky Week. On Friday, students were encouraged to dress either as senior citizens or as members of the opposite sex.

A local resident informed the Voice of Christian Youth America on Friday. The Milwaukee-based radio network responded by interrupting its morning programming for a special broadcast that aired on nine radio stations throughout Wisconsin. The broadcast criticized the dress-up day and accused the district of promoting alternative lifestyles.

"We believe it's the wrong message to send to elementary students," said Jim Schneider, the network's program director. "Our station is one that promotes traditional family values. It concerns us when a school district strikes at the heart and core of the Biblical values. To promote this to elementary-school students is a great error."

Schneider co-hosts "Crosstalk," a nationally syndicated call-in Christian radio show, along with Vic Eliason and Ingrid Schlueter.

"We became aware of this from constituents in your area. Anything that concerns the populace is important enough to talk about," Eliason said. "This is tax-funded - this is not a dress-up party in somebody's house. There are parents, taxpayers who do not appreciate the imposition of a particular lifestyle being portrayed as a normal lifestyle for the kids."

After the program aired, both the school and Reedsburg School District office were flooded with calls complaining about the event.

The response surprised Principal Tammy Hayes, who said no one had raised any objections beforehand. She said a flier detailing Wacky Week had been sent home with children the prior week, and an announcement was also included in teacher newsletters.

"Nobody contacted me," Hayes said.

The dress-up day was not an attempt to promote cross-dressing, homosexuality or alternative gender roles, district administrator Tom Benson said.

"The promotion of transgenderism - that was not our purpose," Benson said. "Our purpose was to have a Wacky Week, mixing in a bit of silliness with our reading, writing and arithmetic."

The theme for Friday's dress-up day came from students, Hayes said. The Wacky Week schedule was created by Pineview's Student Senate with the guidance of secretary Shari Miller.

"It's different every year. They basically present the ideas, and they vote on what they would like from Monday through Friday," Hayes said. "I feel awful for the kids and Shari. They did not mean anything by this day. They were trying to have fun and come up with a fun dress-up day."

About 40 percent of the student body dressed up Friday, Hayes estimated, with half portraying senior citizens and half dressing as the opposite sex.

"I can assure you we will not be having this day (again)," Hayes said.

Schneider said VCY America had no plans to rebroadcast its news special.

Reedsburg is in southern Wisconsin, about 60 miles northwest of Madison.

Do you think "Britney" is the girl all the guys what to be? Nothing like a proud father seeing his son in a pair of fish net stockings, Daisy Duke cutoffs & a low cut blouse. Or maybe her pregnant little sister Jamie, but they will have to stuff a pillow under the shirt.

First it was grade school *** harassment, now it''s grade school gender-bending. When will parents allow kids to be kids. Why are the Self-righteous so afraid of everything???How soon before the uber-Christians start demanding women ware burkkas?? I want my kids to be exposed to the whole world, to know that life isn''t just black and white - that they need to understand before judging. What is wrong with imagination and play??? If you raise your kids with good values and honesty, they won''t disappoint. If you can''t pass on values, because you really don''t believe - or your values are false, then nothing you can do will stop children from discovering the lies their parents live.

must be a slow day at the church. this is ridiculous... I remember wacky days when I was in school and the LAST thing any of these kids are thinking is that it is wrong, they are all thinking, this is a fun way to break up a school week.

Good grief... these people need to get a freaking LIFE and stop objecting to everything. All this does is to show what THEY think...in other words it reveals their own perversions. Ever since people have started wearing clothes, they''ve cross-dressed for amusement and fun. Even when I was a kid in elementary school in the 60''s we''d have a silly "Cinder-fella" "pageant." Halloween costumes have always included dressing as the opposite ***. There is nothing wrong with this. The only thing wrong is these absurd "Christian" groups spreading their own perversions and ignorant bias. It''s THOSE people who cause damage to these kids'' minds, filling them full of weird bigotry.

It''s a basic fact of human psychology that the things that people condemn are often things that are wrong with THEM to begin with... i.e. the homophobe who is a closet homosexual and can''t accept it.

Get a life people, and stop messing with our kids'' minds. You''re the ones causing the most damage.

What are Christians so afraid of? Simply dressing as the opposite gender is not going to make some on gay or become a cross-dresser.

More religious nuts seeking to impose their abnormal control and doctrine on public school students.

And they enjoy tax exempt status. Outrageous.

I think it''s really sad that kids are not allowed to be kids anymore. When I was younger we had "wacky week" too and nobody complained. People, religious or not, are too paranoid about little things these days. Just because my daughter goes to school in jeans and a flannel (stereotypical boys wear) does not mean that she is or will be a lesbian, not does it mean that she wants to be a male. I think there are more important things to worry about such as children going hungry or children being abused. THAT is something worth doing a radio show about.

Hey! Great thought! Now end the mandatory pledge of allegiance with the words "under God" imposed by rightwingers in the ''50s, and we''ll be square.

I totally agree with clowry123. I personally will not get a Big Mac from any McDonalds employee who is not expressing appropriate gender orientation and have no concern that the real issue in regards to our children is filling up their ever increasingly fat riddled bodies with another 900 calories.

I am also concerned that children wearing Spiderman costumes on Halloween may become convinced that they are cartoons and may not breed appropriately.

"Wacky Week"? I never had that! I went to a Catholic school outside Philly. Getting the carap beat out of us by nuns was the usual order. But if we had a wacky week, I''d have opted for the senior citizen disguise. Since that was the direction I''d eventually be headed for. Not becoming the next Boy George.

even sadder is when the parents explain to this kids why they can''t have this activity next year...their silly reading, writing and arithmatic activity perverse? there''s gonna be a lot of confused, sad children...but oh well, if the christians tweak it just a little, maybe next year they can just stone these little children to death...

As long as the kids are not pressured into participating, then I don''t see any issue against it. It can be seen as just a way of using one''s imagination to try to put oneself in others'' shoes.

Ahh the Christian Right..you know the ones who demand everyone must live like they demand, except for them selves. We have ol Rush, a raido host who is a drug addict, but to them he has done nothing wrong. Let your kids do it and they belong in prison. Lets see, those on the Christian Right have been caught paying male and female hookers, caught tricking in the mens room, taking bribes, making fun of eacdh other in private and so on.

To them even kids having simple fun is bad. The kids did not think about "crossdressing" in the way the Christian Right makes it sound. It''s a shame people use the name of God to enforce their views on others.

Reminds me of a fundamentalist church near me that preached out against Halloween "dress-up" and then held an alternative "God and Family" party on October 31st at their fellowship hall in which girls were invited to wear dresses and guys military garb. I guess the "Voice of Christian Youth America" would be fine with the stereotyping of barefoot, pregnant, and enlisted. Anything but an "alternative" lifestyle! Oh no! Funny how fundamentalist America runs a close second in the contest of narrow-minded bigotry right behind fundamentalist Islam, the movement they are trying so hard to destroy. Good riddance to both for spreading their hatred and misery around the world.

It seems to me that too many teachers and schools these days are spending way too much time doing other than teaching. I wonder how many "Wacky Weeks" this school has each year? I wonder if the parents were informed that the school said it''s OK to dress up like the opposite ***? What kind of school is this anyway?

I think the teachers should dress up like teachers and the students should dress up like students and both should get back to the business of education.

Its a public school, that what kind of school it is. If you don''t want your children to participate in such activities, may I suggest you send them to private school and pay for it yourself. Then you will be informed of any and all activities in school including sneezing and taking bathroom breaks.

Please folks, we must be tolerant of the bible-thumping, bigoted, blind-eyed bozos who know what is better for us. (just ask them) We must accept their rule as the Muslim accept the rule of the Muslim clerics who know all and want to forbid all. You must apply the Orwellian law of "Everything not forbidden is compulsory."

And watch the entire world go to Hell, not just half of it...
