How Does Your Doggie's IQ Stack Up?

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  Most dog owners think theirs is the smartest around -- and now -- they can prove it! Sort of.

The Early Show's resident veterinarian, Dr. Debbye Turner, reported Monday that an IQ test for dogs has been developed.

It's called Pooch IQ and, while it's really designed to provide fun more than scientific measurements, it does challenge Fido with tasks that might indicate his or her doggie smarts.

The owners of three dogs at varying points on the presumed canine intelligence scale put their pets the test, then the "winner" went one-on-one with Dave Price's personal pooch!

How disappointing that Dr Turner appears to be relying on a flawed study done years ago that gauged intelligence based on the opinions of obedience judges who had little to no contact with most of the breeds that were ranked. As an owner of Afghan Hounds (since 1976) I take exception with the premise that Afghans in particular and sight hounds in general are unintelligent.
Instead of taking for gospel a study that most people who own these breeds dismiss as ill-informed, based on faulty assumptions and statistically irrelevant, the "smart" thing to would be to do some research on these breeds before misrepresenting them and their abilities on national tv.

I don''t think it is fair to say that a beagle is dumber than a golden retriever. For starters, this test is basically testing how well you can TRAIN a dog. Does training a dog really equate to a smarter dog?? Think about if you applied that to humans. You can train a person to be a terrorist, to be a racist, to be sexist...but the person who is smarter is the one who says "whoa, maybe I should think about this". I have a beagle and my best friend has a golden retriever. While his golden retriever may OBEY him more than my beagle it doesn''t make him smarter. My dog is wayyyy smarter than his golden. My dog knows when I am feeling sick, my dog knows how to get attention, my dog knows when my long time boyfriend and I are fighting, my dog knows how to finagle things to get what he wants, my dog knows how to get everyone to love him within moments of meeting someone, my dog knows when I am sad and my dog knows when I am happy. That golden retrieve doesn''t know any of that..he just knows how to obey his owner...to me that makes him a dumber dog. Don''t equate obedience as being smart. I would love it if Dr. Turner would reply to this comment.
