The balance of power shifts and new leadership takes control as the latest session convenes.

(AP)  Democratic leaders told President Bush on Friday that it's not too late to change course in Iraq and pleaded with him not to hand the war off to the next president.

"We believe there is still time for you to recognize that a change in strategy is necessary to repair the grave damage done to our nation's security," the Democrats wrote.

The letter was intended as advance rebuttal to next week's testimony by Gen. David Petraeus, the top military commander in Iraq, and Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador there. Petraeus and Crocker are expected to say the recent buildup in troops has succeeded in improving security but that more time is needed before more U.S. forces can be withdrawn in significant numbers.

The Democrats said this approach is unacceptable and that they would pursue an alternative policy through legislation. But they face an uphill battle.

Lacking a veto-proof majority, Democrats failed both last year and this year to force Mr. Bush to withdraw troops. The only guarantee to end the war would be for Congress to cut off money for troops while in combat - a position that not enough Democrats support and which Republicans universally oppose.

The lack of options has left Democrats with mostly rhetoric, as it becomes all but certain that the next president will have to manage the war once Mr. Bush leaves office.

"The current Iraq strategy has no discernible end in sight and requires the United States to spend additional hundreds of billions of dollars despite urgent national needs in education, health care, and infrastructure improvement, and when high oil prices have provided the Iraqi government with billions in additional revenue that could pay for their own redevelopment and security," the Democrats wrote.

"This strategy is neither sustainable nor in our broader national security or economic interest," they said.

The letter was signed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, and Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois.

The Iraq War has NOTHING to do with our domestic security. Anyone who believes this probably believed Joseph McCarthy when he saw communists in the closet, woodpile and attic. When I think of the untold billions we''ve dumped into the Middle East, and how we could have used that money here to shore up our infrastructure, fix highways, improve education, give financial assistance to poor and middle-class youth who are earnest about college, it makes me physically ill. Dubya and the Quail Hunter got to pertect them OIL INTERESTS!

More sick Liberal hypocrisy. The Democrats have supported terrorism by undermining the war and are directly responsible for the deaths of 4,000 soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqis. They are the real enemy. They are the real murderers.

Actually, it was the Republicans who supports terrorism by selling weapons to Saudi Arabia.

Then the Saudis sell weapons to Palestine. The terrorists make explosives and kill children in Israel.

Can you say Iran-Contra? One day they are freedom fighters, the next, terrorists. You have no clue

The failure of the Iraq war lies directly at the feet of Bush/Cheney who lied thousands of times to get us there! The plan to invade Iraq was on Bush''s desk the first day he sat down in the Oval Office. Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld and the New World Order already had the invasion and takeover of the Middle East planned!

Their allowing/causing 9/11 to happen gave them the perfect excuse!

However, the failure of Congress to bring it to a close is definitely an issue and reflects corruptness from the very top of Congress down! Especially after the democratic majority in the House, Ms. Pelosi! Pelosi''s leadership needs to be called into question when all the information supports the lies of the administration!

The stranglehold of the republicans in the senate is also the most corrupt issue facing us today. People need to stand up and get these guys out!

Oh, please. This C-student (apparently the best grade money can buy a party boy at Yale) Republican President is responsible for too many atrocities to mention. That doesn''t mean the democrats are correct all the time either. But, to make that statement is total lunacy.

The evil, cowardly Whimpo-crats in Congress have sent the Great Emperor Bush II a letter saying that there is still time for him to change course (not "STAY THE COURSE!") in Iraq.

It is expected that the Great Emperor will file the letter in the circular "filing cabinet" next to his throne in the Oval Office.

After all, the cowardly Whimpo-crats do not tell the leader of the neocon Fascist Nazis what to do. The Great Emperor Bush II is answerable to no one (except maybe the First Lady?), and has demonstrated that time and time again, in particular with the recently leaked memos regarding torture and illegal search and seizures.

Besides, the Great Emperor wouldn''t be pleased more than to "hand off" the problems HE caused, to the next occupant of the throne in the Oval Office, no matter if it be Obama, Clinton, "Bagdad John" McCain, or Ralph Nader(what????)!

That way, the neocon Fascist Nazis could shift the blame for the entire mess the new Emperor/Emperess would inherit on to them instead of the Great Emperor Bush II!

SIG HEIL, BUSH!!!
sig heil, (more of the same) McCain!!!

IT IS TOO LATE FOR OVER 4,000 AMERICAN TROOPS, AND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF IRAQI''S THAT HAVE BEEN KILLED OR WOUNDED IN THIS UNNECESSARY, CORRUPT, ARROGANT, AND MOST BLUNDERED WAR IN HISTORY. THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION FABRICATED, MANIPULATED, AND CREATED FALSE EVIDENCE TO LAUNCH A WAR FOR POLITICAL GAIN.

Did Libs just agree to give Pelosi this position on an interim or temp basis because nobody else wanted the job?

these two surrendercrats obviously pay no attention to the polls which show the majority of Americans wabnt stability before withdrawel. These two have been screaming defeat for months and now they are ignoring another fact that this latest effort has created progress in Iraq on the security and political front. Knowing these truthswhy would they still believe surrender is the only course? Because of rank politics without any vision or care regarding the results of abandoning Iraq. These two idiots are some of the reasons why there will be a republican president in 08.

Bush and Cheney do not want this war stopped at all because to them it''s been a huge success. Their friends in the war contracting business and big oil are making obscene amounts of money (and you can bet Bush and Cheney are getting a cut) and they don''t care how many people, including our troops, have to die for the money.

Jack, it''s not all about liberals and conservatives. You might want to contemplate long and hard about whether staying the course is the right thing to do or not. As for me, I''m not sure. All I know is people are dying every day, private contractors are exploiting billions of dollars of taxes you and I pay, and (as far as I know) the "death to America" chants haven''t gotten any quieter. By the way, it doesn''t sound to intelligent when you call half of the population "IDIOTS". If you want people to take your ideas seriously you might want to think about altering the way you communicate.

I am in no way defending the Democrats because they are equally complicit in this mess. But there is one other aspect totally unrelated to anyone''s political party affiliation that people should pay attention to: our military is close to reaching the breaking point. This is something that military commanders have been admonishing and no one is listening. This is a grave situation with disastrous implications in many ways. Add to that the fact that the military is levying exorbitant interests rates on loans and credit cards military personnel have, effectively rendering reimbursement virually impossible. As a result, the military is deducting what is owed from military personnels'' paychecks. Finally, the military and federal government are doing little to help families at home with members serving abroad. It is time to end the occupation and bring home the troops NOW.

First of all, had Bush not been in office manipulating this country right from the get go, 9/11 very possibly wouldn''t have happened in the first place.

Second of all, he went to Afghanistan and lost Osama, (supposedly, if you believe what you''ve been fed...frankly I think he move him to Florida in Jeb''s spare bedroom).

Then he concocted 935 lies telling this country, Saddam had something to do with it, and that he had WMD''s, which come to find out, he knew he didn''t.

Then, come to find out, the Neocon''s plans to invide the Middle East was on Bush''s desk the first day he stepped in office. Iraq didn''t have anything to do with 9/11 at all. It was for the incorporation of the middle east, and the privatizing of their oil.

Had we gotten a democratic president in the first place, we''d still be paying $40/barrel, and a couple of bucks at the pump, and they''d have realized Poppa Bush''s NAFTA krap wasn''t producing jobs as he promised with his trumped up statistics that he fed to Congress and Clinton.

And third of all, Nancy Pelosi''s leadership in congress hasn''t been worth a ***, especially now that information has been released as to Bush''s corruption regarding Iraq.

A bunch of mewly bills trying to get him to bring the troops home, and saying impeachment is off the table just doesn''t cut it. Her leadership skills are NIL, and most want to even put somebody in the White House that has absolutely NO leadership skills.

Go figure!

"We believe there is still time for you to recognize that a change in strategy is necessary to repair the grave damage done to our nation''s security," the Democrats wrote.

So, all "glorious" SPUN history aside let''s get to the MEAT of the election.

Unemployment, Poverty, lack of Health-care, the number of "discouraged workers" that ARE NOT part of the unemployment picture, and more DEPRESSION INDICATORS are all soaring off the charts.

WHAT are ALL the candidates proposing and what are their Political/Social ACTION Histories in that regard?
THAT is the REAL test of Leadership in my book.

Having served over 20 years in the Military I''m well aware that it''s made up of a VERY DIVERSE cross-section of America and reflects it.

McCain is a PERFECT example as the Bio PROVES.

As a member of a DYNASTIC MILITARY ELITE; his way was PAVED by INFLUENCE through an elite military Ivy-league equivalent school despite SUB PAR PERFORMANCE that would have had ANY non-elite TOSSED OUT.

Sounds like W''s way being paved through Harvard through the INFLUENCE of HIS POLITICAL/BANKING/OIL DYNASTIC FAMILY''S INFLUENCE despite HIS SUB-PAR performance ALSO.

So, what has McCain proposed to alter for the benefit of this nation all the encroaching DEPRESSION INDICATORS?

MORE WAR - the elite has always considered war a "profitable venture" since they are "above the fray".

LET THEM EAT CAKE - another elite concept attributed to Marie Antoinette but also shown by the NERO fiddling while Rome burned story.
McCain puts it in the terms that he doesn''t believe in "bailing out" the POOR but he''s go along with "bail out EXCEPTIONS" for the ELITE.

Thanks for the UNRELATED facts.
Interpreting YOUR "facts" indicates that the unemployment of non-discouraged workers RISES AFTER a "conflict" AKA war.

Hmmm... THIS rise is happening during a war "surge".

That''s ODD - maybe THIS TIME the "war used as employment" strategy hasn''t worked so well.

Also I was pointing out the incongruity that IRAQI CIVILIANS (which DON''T seem to be listed in your gas pricing) pay about ONE TENTH what our military are being GOUGED or PROFITEERED on concerning gas pricing.

Was Interesting though that these prices show where the US stands in the world:
United States $2.88
Kazakhstan $2.75
Russia $2.68
Mexico $2.38
China $2.19
Nigeria $1.92
Saudi Arabia $0.45
Venezuela $0.19

BTW WHERE can I FIND the $2.88 CHEAP GAS you''re showing in your "facts"?
Most of the nation would LOVE to pay that little.

Although it IS enticing to see the nations that Haliburton and the many of the NEOCON ELITE are MOVING TO have such CHEAP GAS.

One other thing Gateway concerning your "facts".

The biggest laugh - Venezuela at $.19 per Gallon? Hugo Chavez really must be sticking in the craw of the WAR PROFITEERS that used IRAQ to JACK UP OIL PRICES.
No wonder they want him put out at ANY cost.

Good hint as to the next WAR TARGET might be.

Will the "summer surprise attack" to insure ANOTHER NEOCON PUPPET is SELECTED be blamed on VENEZUELAN INSURGENT AL-QUAEDA??

Shouldn''t be that hard to twist those "brown people" from SA into al-queda - after all SAUDI/SUNNI BIN LADEN has become "forgotten" while putting out taunts almost weekly and the SHIITES are now called al-queda and BLAMED for 9/11.

due to the two''s ignorance and stupid idea to promise gw bush not to impeach him ifshe made speaker of the house he and cheney they lost their only chance of doing anything other than to pray and as all can see that is doing no good so I wish the two would just fade away in to the sunset and I jhope the Senate and the house opens their eyes to the two lousy idiots and replace the two of them as bush could not stop the impeachment but the few republicans in congress can stop all the acts they wish to try to stop the war I do not believe they didn''t want the war to stop I think they wanted it to go on and claim they are doing all they can and we know they have not and will not so tell them to please shut up and leave it alone.
