(AP)  A young Barack Obama was searching for answers, and perhaps a place to belong, when he decided to visit a fast-growing church recommended by friends. What he heard left him in tears.

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright preached that day about suffering - about the seemingly endless problems of the world and of individuals. But he also talked about the importance of hope, the audacity of believing things can be made better.

"Hope is what saves us," Wright said.

That message moved Obama to embrace Trinity United Church of Christ, along with its philosophy of translating faith into action. But it's a side of Wright that has been overshadowed by his inflammatory remarks about everything from race relations to the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

The furor over Wright's remarks has provoked the greatest crisis for Obama's presidential campaign thus far, but Obama has refused to leave Trinity or sever his ties with Wright, saying there is much more to Wright and the church.

Asked Wednesday on MSNBC's "Hardball" if he thought the questions about his relationship with Wright were unfair, Obama said: "I think that's fair game in the sense that what my former pastor said was offensive. I think that in politics, whether I was white, black, Hispanic or Asian, somebody would be trying to use it against me. I do think that it is important to keep things in perspective."

Trinity is a predominantly black congregation in a mainline, mostly white denomination - the United Church of Christ. Its 8,000 members include politicians, doctors, lawyers and other leaders on Chicago's South Side.

The rapper Common, the former director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, the former director of the state Department of Professional Regulation, and at least one state representative are members of the church. Oprah Winfrey has attended services there.

The church offers a long list of services - housing and employment programs, scholarships, a ministry to people with HIV/AIDS - that mesh well with Obama's political philosophy.

"It's his deep faith in God and his desire to be an agent of change in the world. That's kind of the Trinity mantra," said the Rev. Michael Pfleger, a priest at a South Side Roman Catholic church.

Obama, 46, eventually joined Trinity and was baptized there. Wright performed his wedding ceremony and baptized Obama's two daughters. Years later, he took the theme of Wright's sermon as the title for a book, "The Audacity of Hope."

Most Americans know Wright only from video excerpts of sermons in which he says God should damn the United States for its racism, accuses the government of spreading AIDS and suggests the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks were retribution for the country's past wrongs. Obama's long connection with Wright has raised doubts among some voters about Obama's beliefs and judgment.

His Democratic rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton, said she would have left the church if it had been her pastor saying such things. Obama denounced the most inflammatory of Wright's comments, which he said he didn't know about until recently. But he acknowledges, without providing any detail, hearing Wright make other controversial remarks.

In response to the controversy generated by Wright's remarks, leaders of the national United Church of Christ and the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA are calling for a nationwide "sacred conversation" about race. United Church of Christ leaders also are asking ministers in the church's 5,700 congregations, seminaries and other ministry settings to preach about race on Sunday, May 18.

Obama argues it would be wrong for people to judge Wright solely on a handful of remarks. He has tried to place Wright's comments in the context of anger from a black man who came of age in a time of segregation and civil rights turmoil.

In his first book, "Dreams from My Father," which includes Obama's account of his tearful visit to Trinity, Obama described the impact of working closely with South Side churches as a community organizer in the late 1980s. A religious skeptic, he was moved by their devotion and by the support that churches provided their members.

Quote

I think that's fair game in the sense that what my former pastor said was offensive. I think that in politics, whether I was white, black, Hispanic or Asian, somebody would be trying to use it against me.

Barack Obama
Friends urged Obama to consider joining a church, often mentioning Trinity. Mike Kruglik, a co-worker at the time, said joining helped Obama connect to the local pastors who were vital to his organizing efforts and that Trinity, where many professionals were doing community work, was a logical choice.

"It was very well within the mainstream of the community. It wasn't radical at all," said John Owens, another organizer who worked with Obama at the time.

Jerry Kellman, who hired Obama as a community organizer and is now a lay minister for Chicago's Catholic archdiocese, said Trinity offered a kind of home for Obama, particularly after he got engaged and was planning a family. Its members ranged from the wealthy and well-educated to families just scraping by, he said.

"When Barack joined the church, he wasn't giving his allegiance to Wright. He was joining a community," Kellman said.

Trinity, like other United Church of Christ churches, relies heavily on the membership to make decisions through boards and committees, he added. Even as senior pastor, Wright did not single-handedly control Trinity's direction.

Trinity was an early leader in ministering to people with HIV and AIDS. It offers housing and employment programs to people in need. It has scholarship programs and services for cancer patients, domestic abuse victims, drug addicts and more.

Members are expected to volunteer for one or more of these ministries. They usually announce their choice on the same day they're baptized, said Jane Fisler Hoffman, a United Church of Christ minister who joined Trinity.

"There's this kind of constant encouragement to live your faith, learn your faith," she said.

The church proclaims itself "unashamedly black and unapologetically Christian." It supports charity work in Africa, gives some of its ministries Swahili names, uses Africa-themed decorations.

People familiar with Trinity compare its emphasis on African culture to the way some Catholic churches play up Irish or Italian roots. And they emphatically reject the accusations in widely circulated e-mails that the church is separatist or turns away white members.

"That's such a bunch of hooey," said Hoffman, who is white.

She tells the story of a group of young Germans visiting the church. Wright met with them before the service and prayed with them in German, she said. Later, he delivered part of his sermon in German and the choir sang in German.

"To me, it's a testimony that this is not a church that rejects people of other cultures and races," she said.

She and others say Wright is far from the hothead he may appear to be in video excerpts. They describe him as a serious biblical scholar who thinks carefully about issues.

"Wright is one of the most respected pastors in the African-American church in the United States," said Kellman, who nevertheless says Wright "blew it" in a few sermons.

Pfleger, one of Chicago's most outspoken members of the clergy, said Wright and Obama are similar in their intellectual approach. "They examine things, they study things. They are not quick to make judgments," he said.

Wright's sermons, even when they included strong critiques of racism and inequality in America, were always grounded in the Bible, church members said. Wright sometimes used harsh, painful language, his supporters acknowledge, but mostly he was well within a black tradition of emotional, social commentary.

"It's just speaking a different language to a slightly different culture," said Dwight Hopkins, a Trinity member and a theology professor at the University of Chicago, "and I can see how someone in the suburbs in the high Episcopal church would see those snippets as angry."

So, it''s just okay to spout that kind of krap in a black church because of some conceived SOCIAL issue? But if any such thing is said in a white church, for any reason whatsoever, that church would be crucified! Which is what is happening with Obama''s church! THIS IS NOT WHAT CHURCH IS FOR! There is NO teaching in the Bible whatsoever condoning ANY kind of racism. So Rev. Wright is NOT teaching from the Bible when he says this krap! Doesn''t anybody get that?

Besides that, Mr. Obama spews his disgust at being half white in his books! And touts he doesn''t want to have anything to do with being a white man. And spews his admiration for his black father and his Islamic beliefs! That''s not his church speaking! That''s his own words! He sells this on the market!

This article is nonsense!

I was born and raised in South Texas during the 30''s, 40''s, 50''s, 60''s, 70''s and forward. At times, as a young hispanic male, I could not go in the front door of eating places, mingle with white kids, swim in the muncipal swimming pool, etc. Yet, I and my brothers all volunteer for the armed forces. Had any one of us heard what Wright was preaching, we would either have stopped him or changed churches. There is no context or excuse. Either you love America or you do not. If you do not love her, no one is keeping you here. Obama never objected during his 20 years hearing Wright''s sermons or moved to another church.

we all know what the church''s social action is ... anti-white America, anti=Israel, and on and on. Like Mayor Michael Nutter said in Philadelphia, there is no place for hate in our culture any more and he would have left the church ... NObama didn''t ... it''s that simple.

And his own biased separatist words are in his books, and that''s an issues too! Much more serious than his church!

The Hamas Party has raised money to build schools, medical centers, hospitals, orphanages and mosques for the Palestinians.
Does that excuse their terrorist actions?

Obama needs to disassociate himself completely with Rev. Wright''s Church to even have a chance of being believable.

"My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you''ll join with me as we try to change it."
-- Barack Obama

These did. Also "typical white person". And wait we''ll get to a few more before it''s over. Also, this ain''t ever going away. Whether their his words or not. He won''t disassociate himself from the pinhead Wright and quite frankly the crux of B. Hussein Obama''s philosopy is very much in line with Wright''s liberation theology of which are: government takeover of free markets, government takeover of all schools (indoctrination) and government takeover of healthcare. Suffice it to say, it ain''t going away.

Regarding the question about where Hillary Clinton''s religious beliefs are rooted....they are strongly rooted in Methodism which anyone would know or could find out if they took the time to do a little research rather than allow everything they are told or believe to come conveniently from the media. Moreover, if they were to do a little research they would also learn that she was far more committed and involved in the process of ending racial and sexual discrimination in this country than Obama ever has been. She didn''t opportunistically join a church because it gave her a electorial base. Her faith is rooted in her belief that it is her Christian obligation to commit everyday trying to do something good in the lives of others. She is truly committed to ending poverty and discrimination for ALL people regardless of race, ***, creed, or economic status. Obama on the other hand has only committed himself to the cause of blacks and selectively in the Chicago community. How anyone in their right mind can believe that he is a man for ALL Americans is truly beyond me. If anyone is truly interested, they should read Carl Bernstein''s Bestseller, "A Woman In Charge". It will not only answer your questions about her commitment to ALL Americans but will also answer some of those pesky little questions people like to harp on such as why she has stayed with Bill.

Obama was trying to be more "Black" than he actually is,..he is 6.25% African,..43.75% Arab and 50% Caucasion.

Federal law says that to call yourself any particular race you must be 12.5% of that heritage,..Obama is Legally not an African American,...it is too bad that because of people''s racist ways they have assumed him to be African American,...OOPS!!

Even if elected he will not be the first "African American" president but could claim legally to be the first Arab-American president.

The Democrat Party has no problem forgiving Obama''s anti-American and racist affiliation a pass since most of them share those viewpoints. However, when it comes time to comparing a real war hero like John McCain to this smug hypocrite, there will be no contest. The Left is even attacking McCain for having bad teeth, but what they failed to realize was that his teeth were knocked out when he was being beaten and tortured in a Vietnamese Prison camp. I think that compares more favorably with a guy who bowls at a 37 and a party that lionized an unpatriotic bag of trash like John Kerry.

One of my strongest objections to McCain that most people are unaware of was his opposition to the medal of honor awards being resended that were issued to soldiers involved in the massacre at Wounded Knee. It baffles me how the respected soldier that he truly is could justify the massacre of innocent people.

In college, Obama explains to a girl why he was reading Joseph Conrad''s 1902 classic, "Heart of Darkness": "I read the book to help me understand just what it is that makes white people so afraid. Their demons. The way ideas get twisted around. I helps me understand how people learn to hate."

By contrast, Malcolm X''s autobiography "spoke" to Obama. One line in particular "stayed with me," he says. "He spoke of a wish he''d once had, the wish that the white blood that ran through him, there by an act of violence, might somehow be expunged."

Forget Rev. Jeremiah Wright -- Wright is Booker T. Washington compared to this guy.

Let me clear something up. The exact words that Rev. Wright used was "God D*** America for killing innocent people." Now! what if Rev. wright had said - "Shame on you- America for killing innocent people? Would he be speaking the truth? Remember Dr. Martin Luther King was killed and he was innocent. Maybe it is not what he (Rev. Wright) said but rather how it was said - because if you believe that America has killed innocent people then Rev. Wright is speaking the truth. Unfortunately, Rev. Wright is speaking part of the truth. And the words he chose are coming from an angry man. A man who is still hung up in the Jim Crow era. He still remembers the pain that era has caused him. Obama is correct in stating that Rev. Wright must look at how far we have come as a nation and thank God for this milestone. Rev. Wright doesn''t hate he is angry. Rev. Wright should not carry this anger. He should talk about how far we have come and rejoice in everyones accomplishments!

As far as leaving Trinity church...it is too late for Obama to leave now...he should have done it years ago. Those that claim the hateful cr@p that came out of Wright''s mouth are only sound bites....well, they are sound bites taken from videos made by Trinity Church. Do you you really think they would make videos of his worst sermons??? No they wouldn''t...they would pick his best sermons to put on video!! Which proves to me they agree with his negative views.

Jeremiah Wright and his disciple, Barack Obama believe that hope requires audacity. Jesus taught that it required humility--I realize humility is a virtue in short supply among any politician, since it also requires honesty. Edwards had more than any of the candidates, which I guess is why the media knocked him out first--and now they''re working on Hillary, since at least she has a little more than Obama. If she is denied the nomination, being much more experienced and competent than Obama, I will be forced to vote Republican for the first time--for McCain, the lesser of two evils.

Thats bullshiz! Trinity does more then play up to it. They make Africa their top priority! Unshamefully black, do we say, unshamefully white. What are they trying to do, make us believe their lies, think again. Making excuses won''t work. Its racist in all sense. Catholics don''t just help out the white people they help out everyone. elicatlover,

Rev. Wright''s comments about America were offensive and I think were also scripturally and historically wrong. I don''t see where they weren''t bigoted. Bigotry generally refers to prejudice against individuals and he didn''t attack people, he attacked the policies of the government.

I don''t agree that all Churches are equally involved in social action. If that were true we wouldn''t have the slums and homelessness to the degree that we do.

You certainly have a basis for criticizing the comments of Wright but there''s no basis for you to characterize the entire Congregation as bigots. Doing so makes you the bigot.

WE MUST RELEASE OURSELVES FROM THE GRIP OF RELIGION

Obama has both support AND INFLUENCE from those who are in the grip of blinded Moslem Ideology. This Moslem Ideology has made inroads with many of Obama''s fellow church congregants who in turn, recognize fellow Black Muslim views. Soon enough, these Obama church members often believe and accept the spin and other propaganda of Black Muslims, some of who unfortunately are dominated by well known purveyor of hate against Whites and against Jews, Louis Farakkan.

The whole scene then becomes perverted and poisoned by the religious mentality, now sharing and exchanging additional, often violent and hostile, religious views.

U.K.: Airliner Bomb Plot "Unprecedented"
Prosecutor Says 8 Brits Planned To Blow Up North America-Bound Planes, Kill Hundreds In 2006

"The plan was designed to bring about what would have been a civilian death toll on an almost unprecedented scale," Wright said. (prosecutor Peter Wright)
He said the plot was intended to be a "violent and deadly statement of intent" and designed to "inflict heavy casualties on an unwitting civilian population all in the name of Islam."

croft777,

For starters, I''m a Christian and mercy is what I''m supposed to afford to others.

Secondly, you don''t have a clue what the Congregation is listening to. Like the rest of us you''ve only heard the 2 or 3 most controversial comments he''s made selectively chosen for a particular political impact.

I don''t know you well enough to make a judgement about your character but if I had to make an assessment solely on the basis of your comments here I would have to conclude that you''re a stupid ***.

But that would be unfair.
