Captured In Iraq in 2004, Staff Sgt. Matthew Maupin Is Confirmed Dead

(AP)  The parents of Staff Sgt. Keith Matthew Maupin had vowed never to let the U.S. Army forget about finding their son.

Their efforts included trips to the Pentagon and even meeting with President Bush, but they ended in disappointment Sunday: An Army general told them the remains of Maupin, a soldier who had been listed as missing-captured in Iraq since 2004, had been found.

"My heart sinks, but I know they can't hurt him anymore," Keith Maupin said after receiving word about the remains of his son, who went by Matt.

On Monday, Defense Secretary Robert Gates expressed sympathy to Maupin's family.

"This has been especially difficult for the Maupin family because of not knowing for almost exactly four years. So I want to extend my condolences," Gates said, speaking to reporters aboard a flight to Denmark.

The Army didn't say how or where in Iraq his son's remains were discovered, only that the identification was made with DNA testing, Maupin said. The discovery of a shirt worn by soldiers at the time Matt was captured helped the Army focus its search.

The Department of Defense issued a terse statement Monday announcing an official change in status from missing-captured to deceased. There were no details of how and when Maupin died or where his remains were found.

The Army was continuing its investigation, Maupin said.

Matt Maupin was a 20-year-old private first class when he was captured April 9, 2004, after his fuel convoy, part of the Bartonville, Ill.-based 724th Transportation Company, was ambushed west of Baghdad.

A week later, the Arab television network Al-Jazeera aired a videotape showing a stunned-looking Maupin wearing camouflage and a floppy desert hat, sitting on the floor surrounded by five masked men holding automatic rifles.

That June, Al-Jazeera aired another tape purporting to show a U.S. soldier being shot. But the dark and grainy tape showed only the back of the victim's head and not the execution.

The Maupins refused to believe their son was dead. They lobbied hard for the Army to continue listing him as missing-captured, fearing that another designation would undermine efforts to find him.

The Pentagon agreed to give the Maupins regular briefings, and Bush met with them when he traveled to Cincinnati.

Keith Maupin said the Army told him soon after his son's capture that there was only a 50 percent chance he would be found alive. He said he doesn't hold the Army responsible for his son's death, but that he did hold the Army responsible for bringing his son home.

"I told them when we'd go up to the Pentagon, whether he walks off a plane or is carried off, you're not going to leave him in Iraq like you did those guys in Vietnam," Maupin said.

Keith Maupin and his ex-wife, Carolyn, held a candlelight vigil Sunday night outside the Yellow Ribbon Support Center in Batavia, an office they used to package thousands of boxes of donated snacks and toiletries for shipment to soldiers in Iraq.

"It hurts," Carolyn Maupin said. "After you go through almost four years of hope, and this is what happens, it's like a letdown, so I'm trying to get through that right now."

On Monday, the Maupins rode as planned in the baseball season opening day parade for the Reds in downtown Cincinnati.

"It was important to be here to let everyone know that we thank them for their support and their love of our family and for standing by Matt as they are today," Carolyn Maupin said.

Despite a light rain, the Maupins rode in an open convertible and were greeted with applause and cheers all along the parade route. "That touched my heart," she said. "I don't think they'll forget him."

The Maupins were told by an Army official on Friday to expect an update on their son over the weekend, Keith Maupin said. The Army broke the news about their son's remains at a somber meeting.

"When you look out there in the parking lot and see a three-star general get out of a car, you know it ain't good news," Keith Maupin said.

Four U.S. service members remain missing in Iraq: Capt. Michael Speicher, a Navy pilot, has been missing since the 1991 Persian Gulf War; Sgt. Ahmed al-Taie, a 41-year-old Iraqi-born reserve soldier from Ann Arbor, Mich., was abducted while visiting his Iraqi wife in October 2006 in Baghdad, and Pfc. Byron Fouty and Sgt. Alex Jimenez have been missing since May 12.

Matt Maupin graduated from Glen Este High School, just east of Cincinnati, in 2001 and attended the University of Cincinnati for a year before joining the Army Reserves.

Dan Simmons, the athletic director at Glen Este, remembered him as a quiet but hardworking backup player on the school's football team.

"Matt was a selfless kid on the football field," Simmons said. "He did whatever the coaches told him. He wasn't a starter, but he made the other kids play harder."

A month after his capture, Maupin was promoted to the rank of specialist. In April 2005, he was promoted to sergeant.

Hey demslie, you are so brainwashed or a complete moron. Support the troops, what do you do to support them besides spreading the neocon bush rhetoric. These parents have been living in hell for the past four years and now can grieve the loss of their 20 year old son.935 lies and counting that got us into this mess thanks to rummy bush cheney and rice. Why do you think Colin Powell resigned? He couldn''t take the lies anymore, he at least is an honorable man.

Day after Day, Week after week, the terrorists in IRAQ, IRAN and around the world get their greatest motivation from Democrats in America. As you can read here and any other post that gives voice to the Democrats evil agenda, they have never said a word against the genocidal terrorists that torture and murder our troops. The Democrats join their partners in Iran and Al Qaeda in denouncing the United States. The Democrats say, they support the troops but, the truth is, Democrats support terrorists that kill the troops because it fits their evil angry Anti-American Political Agenda, in perfect concert with Islamic Killers of troops, women and children.

In recent months, many have complained of the treatment of the detainees, at least they are alive. This is what happens whenever one of ours is captured. They are brutalized, mutilated and killed. As a vet this sickens and dismays me. May God bless this family and may Christ ease their pain. They will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I would point out what the father said in his own words,
"My heart sinks, but I know they can''t hurt him anymore," Keith Maupin said after receiving word about the remains of his son, who went by Matt.

They can''t hurt him anymore. Torture is evil and your Christ would turn his back on anyone who would support or condone it. Evil does not cancel evil. It doubles it.

To the family of this beautiful brave young man. When I read your story I wept and my heart felt as though it was breaking. I am an old man and have had the chance to experiance life but this young man never had that chance. He should be honored and never, never forgotten. I curse the people that sent him to his death because I believe that they had no right to do so. Please know that you, his family, are in our hearts and minds and we are eternally grateful. God Bless.

Oh, just the usual treatment of the families of the people serving in the militar, under this administration. This president is so ashamed of his "war" that the media is not allowed to show the caskets of our returning heroes. This is an evil adminstration and that evil just peculates right on down the ladder..

It''s just like everything else in this dirty little war. They don''t have the guts to tell us what really happened. Just vague hints around the edge of everything. They don''t want to tell us the truth, because then we would find out the horrible things that were done to this man. That could conflict with Mr. Bush''s version of reality, and we don''t want to do that. Bread and Circus''s...so goes Rome.

Not being a vet it is hard to know what to do. You did something and i am sure his parents appreciate your gesture. The truth is when we lose a comrade in arms there is really nothing anyione can do to make it any easier. This man died serving his country. He died a hero. God bless him and all our troops.

I saw this mother''''s pain on the news.

It''''s always sad to lose a child, but to lose it to a needless war makes it even more tragic.

My heart and prayers go out to those who''''ve lost loved ones in this war.

Does this include the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi families touched by Bush''s war of choice?

So I took half the day off and did what Matt would do if he could,.......spent time with my Father. It was GREAT! I hope this helps Mr. and Mrs. Maupin.

Yes, I''m sure they feel much better knowing that you did this noble and courageous thing.

I was looking at another story this morning and Sarge said that there wasn''t but one comment made for Matt. There''s a few more but not near enough. I''m not a vet, but an American citizen who appreciates them. I never seem to come up with the right words to say that could ever console the parents of an (: AMERICAN HERO :) like Matt. So I took half the day off and did what Matt would do if he could,.......spent time with my Father. It was GREAT! I hope this helps Mr. and Mrs. Maupin.

What a loss.

All for 935 Lies.

In the meantime, Jenna Bush getting ready for her spectacular wedding extravanganza!

Her proud dad by her side, aka Butcher of Crawford.

That should be a proud and happy day for her!

I am from Ohio too, a small town called Barnesville. We are all here for what ever reason to protect our freedom at home at any price. I want to say to the parents, that this warrior is to be honored for his sacrifice and service to his country. My God be with the family at this time of sorry.
