One Inmate Dead In Texas Prison Riot

(AP)  One inmate was killed and 15 others were hospitalized after a riot at a federal prison in South Texas early Friday.

How the inmate died is still being investigated, said Federal Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Deborah Denham. She did not believe that guards used any potentially lethal force to break up the fight.

No staff members were injured. Seven inmates were treated at the prison for minor injuries.

A pair of fights broke out in two housing units at the prison around 7 a.m., when breakfast was wrapping up and guards on the day shift were coming on duty. What sparked the fights and how many inmates were involved is still under investigation, Denham said.

Denham said the incident was brought under control quickly, and the community was never in danger.

An autopsy will be performed on the inmate who died, Denham said. His identity was not immediately released because authorities were notifying his family.

The medium-security facility in Three Rivers, located in a rural area 70 miles southeast of San Antonio, has about 1,160 inmates.

The riot was the second at a federal prison in Texas this month. Houston police and firefighters were called to the federal prison in downtown Houston two weeks ago after receiving reports that up to 80 inmates were fighting. A stun grenade was used to stop that brawl.

Good morning to all while reading the prison riot story. I hurt to see the term "prison guard" used. I am a Correctional Officer in Virginia. All Correctional Officers in the United States are highly trained Professionals, not everyone can do our jobs it takes a special type of person to spend 12 hours locked up in a correctional facility, to be a police officer a councelor a therapist a first responder ready to provide medical aid and ready to put him or herself in harms way to keep offenders from killing each other and being unbiased to child molesters, rapists, murderers just to name a few. So calling us "guards" is like calling the Police "pigs" the police don''t like to be called "pigs" and Correctional Officers don''t like to be called "guards". WE ARE PROFESSIONALS WHO TAKES PRIDE IN OUR JOBS IF IT WASN''T FOR US SOCIETY WOULD BE IN CHAOS. WE KEEP THEM IN SO YOU CAN LIVE IN PEACE.

Calling one of us a "prison guard" is just about the most offensive thing you can call us.

I wish bleeding heart liberals like you would come behind the fence and WORK inside. Then you would shut your mouth! Most all of the Correctional workers bust their butts everyday to do the right thing. Inmates can act like animals and sometimes do. Other inmates are just trying to do their time and go about their business. I am so sick of listening to Jack a**es like you who don''t have a clue. They are in prison for crimes!!!! IF it were your little sister that was raped and killed then you wouldn''t care what happens to the inmates. BUT I KNOW THAT even the killers get free education, room, board, food, health care, dental, optical. More than half of the inmates in the Federal Prison system are better off now behind the fence than they ever were before they were on the streets. SO by your posting I would guess that your little thug was in prison..I am sure he did nothing wrong..no matter howmany people he has hurt, drugs he has sold, or women he has raped...

Please. The incarceration industry is going strong. Your little vanity about your job title is typical of your breed. You are not doing alot of correction in that job are you? You are guards. Many of you are brutal but most are not. Collect your government pension and shut your pie holes.

I do not work for the Texas Department of Corrections. I work for the Missouri Department of Corrections. Do NOT call us "guard". We, as well as those working for the Texas Dept. of Corrections are NOT "guards". We are Corrections Officers. Calling us "guard" is like using the "n" word to describe an African-American. People, there IS a difference between a "guard" and us.

Exactly how we do it in NY too. We are Correction Officers, we maintain the peace in accordance with the law, DOCS guidelines, and facility rules.

"Prison guards" are the scummmbags that smuggle in drugs, weapons, and have *** with inmates. Calling one of us a "prison guard" is just about the most offensive thing you can call us.

Many inmates sitting in federal prison today are decent people who made a poor choice. Most inmates are not killers and rapists and most inmates deserve a second chance after they have done their time.

So those that are rioting are doing what? Behaving? Acting in accordance with facility rules?

Texas should let out their prisoners and let them tap dance on Crawford. This would show shrub the location of the real war (of course he still would not understand with "0" intelligence). As the saying goes, better clean your own porch, before you worry about others!

I understand the anger towards people who have skirted the rules and broken the law, but surely they don''t all deserve stabbing and death. Many inmates sitting in federal prison today are decent people who made a poor choice. Most inmates are not killers and rapists and most inmates deserve a second chance after they have done their time.
