Al Gore's New Campaign

Tells 60 Minutes That Doubting Global Warming Is Man-Made Is Akin To Believing Earth Is Flat

  • Play CBS Video Video The Gore Campaign

The former vice president and former presidential candidate Al Gore talks to Lesley Stahl about his campaign to make the world aware of global warming.

  • Video Stahl's Reporter's Notebook

Al Gore is uniting "strange bedfellows" in the fight against global warming. And he has recently been criticized for owning a mansion that contradicts his green message. Lesley Stahl comments.

    Al Gore  (CBS)

(CBS)  When Al Gore ran for president in 2000, he was often ridiculed as inauthentic and wooden. Today he is passionate and animated, a man transformed. His documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," won an Oscar, and last year he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Now he's a certified celebrity, the popular prophet of global warming, and has helped change the way the country thinks about the issue.

And yet while 70 percent of Americans believe global warming is a big problem, they still rank it near the very bottom of their list of top 25 concerns.

Photos: Al Gore "Green" Media Star
And so Al Gore is about to wage a new campaign to emphasize the urgency of what he says is the greatest challenge facing our time. But as correspondent Lesley Stahl found out while spending time with him and his wife Tipper, for the moment at least, there's another campaign Americans care about most.

"We were with you in the San Jose Airport. And a man came over to you and he says 'Who are you supporting, Obama or Hillary? Who are you supporting? Who are you supporting?'" Stahl asked.

Gore's response to the man? "Uh ha."

"So, let me ask you. Who are you supporting?" Stahl asked.

"I'm tryin' to stay out of it," Gore replied.

Getting Al Gore to talk about politics these days is hard work. But as a party leader and uncommitted superdelegate, his staying "out of it" isn't easy.

"Are they calling you every minute?" Stahl asked.

"Not every minute," Gore said.

"No? Lotta pressure though, I'll bet," Stahl remarked.

"We unplugged the phones for this interview, so I can't say with authority. But no, everyone -- they both call. And I appreciate that fact," Gore replied.

"And what about the idea of the honest broker who goes to the two candidates and helps push one or the other of them off to the side?" Stahl asked.

"Yeah, kind of a modern Boss Tweed," Gore remarked.

"Except his name would be Al Gore," Stahl said.

"Well, I'm not applying for the job of broker," Gore replied, laughing.

He's not ruling it out, but he says he already has a job, as he puts it, "P.R." agent for the planet.

"You have said, and I'm going to quote you, 'If I do my job right, all the candidates will be talking about the climate crisis,'" Stahl said. "I can't think of a time I've heard the candidates talk about it."

"Right. Well, I'm not finished yet," Gore said.

The Gore campaign on global warming went into high gear when his documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" was an unexpected hit. What he's been doing is holding seminars, where he trains other people to give his famous slideshow about the effects of greenhouse gases.

So far in all, he's coached about 2,000 people, teaching one little workshop at a time.

His slideshows are tailored to his audiences. For example, when he talks to evangelical Christians, he includes passages from the Bible.

Gore is trying to redefine this as a moral and spiritual issue. "We all share the exact same interest in doing the right thing on this. Who are we as human beings? Are we destined to destroy this place that we call home, planet earth? I can't believe that that's our destiny. It is not our destiny. But we have to awaken to the moral duty that we have to do the right thing and get out of this silly political game-playing about it. This is about survival," he said.

Maybe Al will suggest burning people at the stake that don''t agree with him viewpoint, a la the Spanish Inquisition. Oh wait, burning. Bad for the atmosphere.... that we can do more to be environmentally aware is certain. That ''without a doubt'' man is the driving force in today''s environment is past nutcase to the point of religious fanatic, Al.

The worst case scenario for global warming is extinction (ours) and the first response to impending death is denial. Once deniability is impossible comes anger the Cheney''s of the world will call down fire and brimstone on the heads of the bearers of bad news.Hopefully by the time we get to the barganing stage we will be able to to turn this mess around and save ourselves.

Water vapor is the principle greenhouse gas. Every water vapor molecule absorbs four times as much IR energy from sunlight as every CO2 and there are 193 times as many water vapor molecules in air as there aer CO2''s. (3% of air is water vapor, but only 0.038% of air is CO2) The net heating effect of water vapor it 768 times that of CO2. Or, water vapor is responsible for 99.875% of all atmospheric heating. CO2 is utterly insignificant and man is minor source of it making only 3.22% of all CO2 every year.

Al gore has been around the Clintons too long. He also seems to believe if you tell a big enough lie everyone will believe it. The sad thing is, many do believe him.

The earth is actually cooling... since 1998. Even the ocean temperatures are getting cooler.

No doubt CBS gave Gore 20 minutes of free commercial time.

Al Gore ? I thught he was borrowing Mr. Cheney''s undisclosed location until after the Dem convention.
I''ve been looking for him. I''ve been concerned that I have been overusing my carbon quota all winter when I used my snow thrower to clear my driveway. I was hoping that he might be able to send one of his true believers over to shovel it by hand. We still have at least 4'' of snow around the house.

If this is global warming I''d sure hate to see it when the cycle reverses and we start to get global cooling as I''m sure we will.

Al Gore updated his Tennesee home with solar panel because of all the grief he was getting for having a home that wasted energy. He paid for them with the carbon credits that morons pay to waste energy.

This is the guy who flunked Seminary School and couldn''t get through other academic adventures.

We know AL Gore is a complete liar and a robust egomaniac. When Al, a consumate politician and erstwhile B.S.er thinks that hundreds of SCIENCE PROFESSIONALS with rigorous PHDs in fields relative to the earth sciences who objectively dispute the "Church of Global Warming", are stupid; then he causes us to realize what we have already known; that Al really DOES think he is smarter than everybody.

Remember boys and girls, this is all about Al Gore. If biting the heads of chickens would give him the adulation he craves, he would do it.

Why doesn''t Gore practice what he preaches? Get a smaller house, get rid of his private jet? Now I would have those things with his money but I would not be promoting fear(state of fear by michael crichton). This warming trend has been occuring since the last ice age and although we love egocentrism humans don''t control everything. We like to have that sense of control b/c it decreases anxiety. However, we live on a living organism that will kick us off if we become too offensive. I would hope we would do what is right by the planet b/c it is right than out of fear. Peace in the middle east

If Al Bore is so sure of global warming, why won''t he debate with the scientists that disagree with him? What makes him think that humans are significant in the grand scheme of things? Just another Democrat elitist imposing his belief on everyone else. I''ll believe him when he drives a Prius and lives in the typical American neighborhood. Let''s concentrate on feeding the hungry people in the world instead!

Al Gore is a pompous, arrogant blowhard stuck on himself and his myth of a crisis. Hopefully all his lies will be completely exposed before long. The wheels on the cart of his theory are already starting to come off, which is why he must so completely malign those who disagree with his conclusions. And he must move for IMMEDIATE action (oh, for others, of course, not for him). The earth has been cooling for 10 years now. If he doesn''t get action soon, the scientific research will clearly prove him wrong, and he can''t have that. So we must act NOW! Please. We''ll do something, Al, when you convince China, India and other large polluting nations to do something. Until then, we will do nothing. The US already has some of the cleanest air and water on the planet. I think the guy is a mental case and need psychiatric help. And I love how CBS has such a thorough and OBJECTIVE person conduct the interview with this scoundrel!

I am amazed at the fact that anyone who disagrees with this clown is considered some sort of heretic. What ever happened to intelligent dialogue? I had the unfortunate opportunity to hear him address our business group (before his campaign on weather control), and most people walked away with the same impression. That the guy is lucky he is employed by the federal government because he was an empty suit. ''Good luck to anyone who buys his tripe.

If Al Gore is so certain of the truth, and so certain of the ignorance of his critics...why is he afraid to debate the issue with anyone?

Sure, when you can make a movie or do softball interviews, you don''t get challenged on your views. It''s easy to attack opponents who don''t even get a change to present their views, let alone defend themselves.

Rather than generalize, I''ll speak specifically about Al Gore now:

Mr. Gore, you are an intellectual coward. You literally hide behind your arrogance. Don''t tell the world people like me are wrong or ignorant...put up or shut up! Debate, publicly, a critic of your environmental theories. Let THEM put forth THEIR argument instead of setting up your fake straw-men and knocking them down.

Debate ME, if you have the stones. Surely you''re not afraid of an unknown flat-earth type like me, are you?

Wait...you''re afraid of ANYONE who doesn''t believe in Man-bear-pig...I mean global warming fanatacism.

We are getting more and more ACTUAL science on this issue every year. And virtually every single piece of new data proves what us ''deniers'' already presumed to be true: there is no such thing as ''global warming''. The planet is actually getting COLDER since 1998!!!! Want to question me?? Go ahead! But I''m using the same data IPCC uses!

Gore is a socialist *** who is as big a tool of the old soviet-style anti-american campaigns as the nutcases who marched through the streets of D.C. in the 1980s trying to end ''nukes''.

I''ll go ahead and take the mystery out of all this for you liberals now. Algore will never, ever, ever admit that he was wrong. No matter how much real science is stacked up to prove that his PR campaign about CO2 was complete *** it will still never result in an admission from Algore or the UN or any other Lefty organization that they have come to their senses. The real war is not against CO2 but against Capitalism. And its real easy to become a celebrity by taking on ''evil corporations'' and ''big polluters'' but its much harder to get famous by being in favor of actual solutions to poverty, crime and war.

Algore will be a millionaire 100 times over and his religion of Global Warming will go the same way as the Coming Ice Age (another ''catastrophe'' which has failed to occur). And we somehow didn''t get our apology for that last hoax, did we?

When, not if. When man-made global warming is proven to be at best a well intended mistake, at worst a fraud brought to us by the usual suspects (communist-socialist, anti-capitalist, anti-America types, etc..); what will these people try next?

There must be something else they can lie about to extort BILLIONS of dollars from the useful idiots they prey upon. Al Gore is the main snake oil salesman speaking for this group.

On another subject. How about that Al Gore for president idea they have started floating, again?

Is CBS going to provide any actual scientists in this episode who aren''t followers of the global warming religion? They''ve not really do that in the past but it would be a wonderful change in the journalistic policy to provide some REAL scientists when talking about an issue which is SUPPOSED to be about science.

Just a thought. I mean, its not like Iraq (an issue for which there could only possible be on viewpoint which is even remotely valid as the 9000 pieces 60 Minutes has done to prove).

Al Gore flunked science. In any science curriculum, there are a couple standard precepts that are taught.
1) Given a body of data, when you develop a theory that explains the data, it must explain ALL of the data. Data points that fall outside of your explanation mean that your theory is WRONG
2) You must be willing to debate your theory in front other trained scientific minds.
As to point one: The man made global warming crowd keeps changing their theories to suit the data, yet every time new data is brought forth, it is outside of their theory.Temperatures have not increased in 10 years, they have plateued for 5, last year globally was .5 degrees cooler than the "norm". Cold, snowy winters are not predicted by the models, so they change the model
As for point 2: Well, we all know the answer to that, Algore is totally unwilling and afraid to openly debate his assertions

Will Leslie Stahl as Algore why he has ducked every debate in since he left the White House about ''Global Warming''? Will she ask why Algore is so afraid of actually allowing any group of people to see him defend his religion in front of any group of people? Or why he has failed to change his ''movie'' in response to the UK court findings that it contains numerous lies?

Maybe she will ask Algore why the latest NASA data on ocean temperatures is showing that oceans are actually gettin COOLER? Or that global temperatures are not matching the IPCC climate models and going DOWN instead of UP like ''global warming'' predicted? Or maybe Algore could explain how CO2 (which comprises about 1% of the entire atmosphere) can create a greenhouse effect all by itself? Or maybe how CO2 is supposed to affect precipitation cycles which have a far more important effect on actual temperatures on any given day?

Or, maybe Algore can explain how he can predict what the temperature of the entire Earth will be 100 years from now when even the daily forecast for a single US city takes nearly 1,000,000,000 calculations (according to the US Weather Service)? Just a simple question Al.

Gore is a dupe or a dope. This world is heading for rewnewed global cooling not warming and it will be caused by reduced solar activity.

This guy is really pitiful.

Carbon Emissions do not cause globlan climate change. The climate has changed many time in our past history when there was no carbon being emitted. Just look back a little bit to the Little ICe Age and to the Medieval Warm Period that caused Greenland to be named Greenland.

Emissions might affeft health, but are not responsible for climate changes. Hell, ice has been melting and reform for eons.

In point of fact, Mr. Gore is intent on camouflaging the "inconvenient truth" that belief in global warming is a religion, a cult rather than being based on scientific fact. None of the so-called studies establish causality, the idea that humans are causing the temperature of the earth to rise. To prove his belief scientifically, he must show that we are the cause, not simply that the the rise in temperature and the advancement of industry and technology roughly coincide. Interestingly, he has stated we should have had more evidence before invading Iraq, yet his evidence is far less compelling.

From volcanoes like Mt. St. Helens (which spewed as much greenhouse gas into our atmosphere in two weeks as all of human industrial history in over a century) to the fact that hurricane experts, paleo-climatologists and other top scientists studying weather and climate have come out publicly disputing the creed that global warming is manmade, Gore wants us to ignore the man behind the curtain.

His dishonesty about the issue is astounding. His desire to exploit our fears is reprehensible. He is a charlatan who acts to divide our society for his own benefit. His hypocrisy apparently knows no bounds.

What a disgraceful individual.

Al Gore''s egocentric world view of course blames humans for climate change. We are the cause of everything. But Al, if you think people that don''t buy into your B.S. are like flat-earthers, then I would have to say your view, that people are at the center of this, is more like Aristotle%u2019s view of the heavens, with the earth (and man) as the center of the universe. How could "man" not be at the center of everything, Al?
Maybe the deniers of your claims are actually more like Copernicus, which placed the Sun at the center of our system, not earth.
My point is there are a lot of things we still don''t understand about the Sun and our solar system. My guess is the Sun probably plays a bigger role in our climate than we realize.
I used to live at the beach in Newport Beach, Ca. and I guarantee if I went back there today, the beach and tide levels are exactly as they have been. The oceans are not rising.
Eventually, it will be all about raising taxes on the Oil companies and more control of us, the people. Those were Al''s first words (raising taxes on Oil) when he was interviewed back stage after winning his Oscar.
Higher taxes-less freedom.
Al Gore is a charlatan.
Al, please, just go away.
