John McCain
Some call him a hero, some a maverick. Will Americans call him Mr. President?
Back campaigning after a brief family vacation in the Caribbean, the presidential candidate focused on the housing crisis that has rocked Wall Street and the economic downturn that has forced the Federal Reserve to intervene. And after days of sniping with rival Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign, Obama turned his attention to McCain.
On Tuesday, McCain derided government intervention to save and reward banks or small borrowers who behave irresponsibly and offered few immediate alternatives for fixing the country's growing housing crisis.
"John McCain has admitted he doesn't understand the economy as well as he should, and yesterday he proved it in giving a speech on the housing crisis," Obama told an auditorium of supporters.
Obama pointed out that McCain "said the best way for us to address the fact that millions of Americans are losing their homes is to just sit back and watch it happen. In his entire speech yesterday, he offered not one policy, not one idea, not one bit of relief to the nearly 35,000 North Carolinians who are forced to foreclose on their dreams in the last three months."
It's the housing crisis which threatens the American Dream most immediately and which will test the next president, reports CBS News correspondent Dean Reynolds.
McCain advocates lending reforms but is reluctant to intervene heavily, believe that would penalize taxpayers who played by the rules, Reynolds reports. Clinton offers a $30 billion emergency stimulus to help those at risk, while Obama would fund his $10 billion plan with money saved over time by ending the war in Iraq.
North Carolina holds its primary May 6 with 115 delegates at stake.
"John McCain may call helping struggling homeowners pandering, but I don't think the families in North Carolina who are losing their homes would see it that way," said Obama, who is due to give what aides are billing as a major economic speech Thursday in New York.
In response, McCain said he clearly is in favor of doing more for homeowners.
"I'll do whatever's necessary to help the homeowner, the legitimate homeowner, and we may have to do more," McCain told reporters in California. "But raise taxes as Senator Obama wants to do or some kind of massive bailout that is a needless expenditure of taxpayer dollars is obviously something that I don't support."
In California on Tuesday, McCain said he wants to leave the door open to an array of proposals to address the problems and seemed to suggest he might even be open to solutions that stray from the GOP line.
"I will not play election-year politics with the housing crisis," he said, adding he would evaluate all proposals. "I will not allow dogma to override commonsense."
But the small-government advocate and four-term Arizona senator also put restrictions on how far he was willing to go, saying: "it is not the duty of government to bail out and reward those who act irresponsibly, whether they are big banks or small borrowers."
In Greensboro, Obama used a question about his Christianity to again address the incendiary comments made by his former Chicago pastor, Jeremiah Wright.
"We can't afford to be distracted ... every time somebody somewhere says something stupid that everybody gets up in arms and we forget about the war in Iraq and we forget about the economy," Obama said.
Many in the crowd Wednesday were college students, in a town where students once played a defining role in U.S. history. In 1960, a year before Obama was born, black students staged sit-ins at a whites-only lunch counter at a Woolworth's five-and-dime in downtown Greensboro, an act of civil disobedience that spread throughout the South.

See all 157 CommentsMcCain will have to do the same thing you do, Mr. Obama, engage the experts and put together a plan.
I don''t know what money Mr. Obama thinks he''s going to use to solve the economic crisis. He says he''ll save money by eliminating the Iraq war.! But good God, we''re already trillions in debt for the Iraq war and will be paying it off for 30 years! Again, my question is what money is he going to use?

It would appear to me that YOU should be more concerned about things that really matter, like this Economy of this nation going right down the tubes. It''s time to get serious here and some old black minister IS not going to make or break our economy. Another 4 years of Trickle Down will. I''m sorry you freaks can''t get over your attitude about race and I''m sorry you feel you must USE this against Obama but right now WE''D better be thinking about putting food on the table there sparky. Obama is exactly right, McSame hasn''t a clue about the economy or what to do about it. Sieg Heil Bush

Now come on! You think this "Trickle Down" garbage is going to work? How many times do we try this insane economic plan before we accept the fact it''s a complete and absolute failure. McSame says he''s going to continue the same failed policy, Obama say''s we need to take on the Clinton type policy. Duh?? One produced 8 years of prosperity like none we''ve seen in a long long time, a Balanced Budget AND a surplus CLINTON wanted to us to pay back Social Security. It''s time to put the knives away folks.. it''s time we started thinking about America. The Republican''s and their policies have been a complete FAILURE!!
PRINCETON, NJ -- A sizable proportion of Democrats would vote for John McCain next November if he is matched against the candidate they do not support for the Democratic nomination. This is particularly true for Hillary Clinton supporters, more than a quarter of whom currently say they would vote for McCain if Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee.

This IS not the Republican Party and not a bunch of follow along losers... of course they will say that now. By November though, their minds will have changed and you can bank on it. Geeeezzzz! I''m 60 years old and have been through a LOT of these. This is NOT the democrat party of Ted Kennedy and Jimmy Carter, things are just a wee bit different today than then. Sieg Heil Bush

How can anyone sit in a meeting with a group that professes a party for the WHITE RACE? That''s the group that Lott and the Congressmen from Georgia made speeches to and accepted the backing of. I mean if you want to play those games the Republican''s have a lot more to loose! Sieg Heil Bush
He tells things like it is ! God bless him, keep it up McVet....
First she denies that she was pro NAFTA. White House schedules have now been released, showing she held several high profile meetings to endorse NAFTA.
Second she tells outright lies about her bullet dodging trip to Bosnia.
The big problem for Hillary is that the American people know how easily the Clintons lie. Taking a leaf from Bill she will say: Well, it depends on how you define "sniper fire" and "ran". And then we will hear her say I DID NOT HAVE MILITARY RELATIONS WITH THAT SNIPER.
Misspeaking is one thing, repeating it over and over makes it a FLAT LIE !!
She cannot win the Democratic nomination without causing a civil war in the Democratic Party. Her recent actions, especially comparing herself to, and praising, McCain while undermining Obama, make it appear that she is willing to do just that -- split the party in two. Seriously, can you imagine McCain saying that that he had a lifetime of experience, Hillary had a lifetime of experience, but Romney didn''t? That would never happen. It''s unacceptable. And it has to stop.
I get that it sucks to lose. But, it happens. Hillary, drop out with your head up high. Unless of course you''re ducking sniper fire again
Why wont Hillary release her tax returns? If Hillary can loan 5 million dollars to her campaign then surely the voters have a right to know the source of her funding.
The main excuse we''ve gotten so far is that Hillary Clinton just has too much on her plate. "I''m a little busy right now," she said during the Ohio debate. "I hardly have time to sleep. But I will certainly work toward releasing, and we will get that done and in the public domain."
That was three weeks ago. Two weeks ago, Howard Wolfson promised the returns would be released "on or around April 15." But weren''t the returns completed and filed a long time ago? Doesn''t Clinton''s accountant have time to print them out and make some copies (note to Clinton''s accountant: many Kinko''s are open 24 hours).
In short, it''s well past time for Hillary Clinton to be as "vetted" as she claims to already be -- and to have this vetting done now by Democratic voters rather than later by GOP hit squads. She needs to live up to the standard she laid out for Rick Lazio, the opponent in her 2000 Senate race. At that time, she hypocritically said it was "FRANKLY DISTURBING" that Lazio was holding back on releasing his tax returns and she even sent a staffer dressed as Uncle Sam to taunt him during campaign stops.
What a difference eight years -- and tens of millions of dollars (some of them from questionable Arab deals) -- can make.

Rather be caught lieing for that, then having a racist pig for an uncle wright....like Obama chose....
They go for a big unknown, inexperienced guy who copies almost all of Clinton''s policies and gives a great speech. And it doesn''t seem to matter that he doesn''t hold his own life to the same standards as his well crafted speeches. It is truly mind boggling.

Of ourse he did personal attacks are all a hater like Obama can do, he has no record, xerox positions, evil Partorns and a wife who hates America again...
LOSER, Dems are going turn out in mass now that they know the DNC fixed the race for Obama and wipe his math lead out by counting all anti Obama voters...so ingorne his evil attacks they are boring a pitiful jsut pitiful he and his surrgates have been threatening and beating on Hillary she just laughs them off and has higher favorably within the Party then Obama.

There comes a time when you have to put away the weapons of war my friend. Clinton is beaten.. there''s no way she can get the nod. We have ONE man out there right now who has the support and ability to unite this nation AND bring in a NEW economic plan, that''s Obama. It''s time we all understood that the country and our way of life in hanging in the balance here. Mr. Bush has really made a royal mess of things and we, all of us, have to clean it up.

CBS reported last night on their latenight program that party bigwigs, and not just Richardson, and a growing number of average democrats calling for her to get out of the race. She''s really starting to **** some people off that count now.Shouldn''t be too long.I couldn''t sleep,LOL
1. Americans should not be indignant about the 9/11 attacks on WTC because our government had done something worse in the past.
2. Americans should not pay too much attention to the disappearing of the white Natalee Holloway in Aruba because there are much more black girls who died in Darfur of Sudan everyday.
Conclusion :
1. We should not be grieved and paid too much attention about the casualties and displacement of Katrina because there were much more casualties and displacement in the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
2. We should not feel sorry for a homicide of a black girl because there had been homicides of white girls.
3. You should not care too much for your wife or children when they were sick or had an accident because much more families in this world are broken and suffering.
4. We should not care too much for the suffering of any human being we know because too many we do not know had died and suffered in the second world war.
OBAMA HAD 20 YEARS OF THIS BRAIN WASHING.
Al Sharpton is a FAKE, just as Obama is!%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026.I think you do a great job , please don%u2019t give up!%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026..even if you are being called a RACIST!%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026.Don%u2019t back down, this is what people want you to do%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026
O%u2019Bama has been lying as well. he is now hedging about Michigan and Florida %u2014 first he announced to the media that he will go along with what the party decides on these two states now, he is saying he would not give Michigan and Florida a chance for a RE-VOTE %u2026he is slurping his own spit. OBAMA, HAS MORE TO GAIN BY ALLOWING MICHIGAN AND FLORIDA THEIR RE-VOTE OPPORTUNITY, look at it this way %u2026 if he fails to acknowledge that these people have a constitutional right to a re-vote %u2026 these votes will most likely go to the Republican party or they just won%u2019t vote . OBama should not be too confident that he will win the nomination or election without Michigan and Florida. Every vote should count%u2026 this is America not Africa or the middle east.

I agree with you that we need to know more about this man. After all as we know from past experiences, getting elected to the senate doesn''t automatically qualify you for sainthood.
Today Gallup reported that 28% of Hillary''''s supporters won''''t support Obama, if he wins and would cross over to McCain. 18% of Obama''''s supporters would also cross over if Hillary wins the nomination.

"some kind of massive bailout that is a needless expenditure of taxpayer dollars is obviously something that I don''t support."
Silly man. Isn''t it obvious that he supports the Iraq war?
Richards lost all credibility, and Brazille''s interview turned into a mush mouthed talk and backed down from her previous rhetoric.
They all tried to mush mouth their way thru it.

You are right, votes ARE the only thing that count!!! Obama is aware of that too, thats why he is leading in the popular vote. Someone should tell Hillary that the presidency cant be annointed to her, she actually has to get the most votes, which would translate into delegates to win.....
Posted by obama8years
Do you have sort of figures or facts to backup this assertion?
An excellent observation.
Oh, but he''s not and the DNC knows it! And so does CNN. Go add ''em up!

Yeah, dont help your neighbors, right? Help the predatory lenders!!! This is the kind of krap that people are sick of. Class warfare against those in need. The good christains in this country dont want their tax money going to help their neighbors save their homes. We cant have universal healthcare because we dont want to look after those who cant afford to look after themselves. Its all fine until it hits home, when you or one of your relatives come down with cancer and the insurance company wont cover most of the expensives and you lose your home paying for cancer treatments......

Dont believe the hype....if Hillary lead in anything, she would be shouting it from every rooftop!!! Her campaign has been trying to find something that she is leading in for weeks, but with no success. They even brought up electorial votes!!! How ridiculous!!! There are no hidden numbers, dream on.....
I agree...MSNBC is the way to go!!!
Yeah, she does. RealClearPolitics isnt adding Michigan in their popular vote, just Florida. Hillary is in fact in the lead with the popular vote.
She doesn''t have to shout it from the roofs. The DNC is the only one where those votes will count. They can''t disenfranchise those voters, and they know it.
