Some call him a hero, some a maverick. Will Americans call him Mr. President?

(CBS/AP)  Democrat Barack Obama ridiculed Republican presidential rival John McCain on Wednesday for what he called a "sit back and watch" approach to the economic troubles gripping the nation.

Back campaigning after a brief family vacation in the Caribbean, the presidential candidate focused on the housing crisis that has rocked Wall Street and the economic downturn that has forced the Federal Reserve to intervene. And after days of sniping with rival Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign, Obama turned his attention to McCain.

On Tuesday, McCain derided government intervention to save and reward banks or small borrowers who behave irresponsibly and offered few immediate alternatives for fixing the country's growing housing crisis.

"John McCain has admitted he doesn't understand the economy as well as he should, and yesterday he proved it in giving a speech on the housing crisis," Obama told an auditorium of supporters.

Obama pointed out that McCain "said the best way for us to address the fact that millions of Americans are losing their homes is to just sit back and watch it happen. In his entire speech yesterday, he offered not one policy, not one idea, not one bit of relief to the nearly 35,000 North Carolinians who are forced to foreclose on their dreams in the last three months."

It's the housing crisis which threatens the American Dream most immediately and which will test the next president, reports CBS News correspondent Dean Reynolds.

McCain advocates lending reforms but is reluctant to intervene heavily, believe that would penalize taxpayers who played by the rules, Reynolds reports. Clinton offers a $30 billion emergency stimulus to help those at risk, while Obama would fund his $10 billion plan with money saved over time by ending the war in Iraq.

North Carolina holds its primary May 6 with 115 delegates at stake.

"John McCain may call helping struggling homeowners pandering, but I don't think the families in North Carolina who are losing their homes would see it that way," said Obama, who is due to give what aides are billing as a major economic speech Thursday in New York.

In response, McCain said he clearly is in favor of doing more for homeowners.

"I'll do whatever's necessary to help the homeowner, the legitimate homeowner, and we may have to do more," McCain told reporters in California. "But raise taxes as Senator Obama wants to do or some kind of massive bailout that is a needless expenditure of taxpayer dollars is obviously something that I don't support."

In California on Tuesday, McCain said he wants to leave the door open to an array of proposals to address the problems and seemed to suggest he might even be open to solutions that stray from the GOP line.

"I will not play election-year politics with the housing crisis," he said, adding he would evaluate all proposals. "I will not allow dogma to override commonsense."

But the small-government advocate and four-term Arizona senator also put restrictions on how far he was willing to go, saying: "it is not the duty of government to bail out and reward those who act irresponsibly, whether they are big banks or small borrowers."

In Greensboro, Obama used a question about his Christianity to again address the incendiary comments made by his former Chicago pastor, Jeremiah Wright.

"We can't afford to be distracted ... every time somebody somewhere says something stupid that everybody gets up in arms and we forget about the war in Iraq and we forget about the economy," Obama said.

Many in the crowd Wednesday were college students, in a town where students once played a defining role in U.S. history. In 1960, a year before Obama was born, black students staged sit-ins at a whites-only lunch counter at a Woolworth's five-and-dime in downtown Greensboro, an act of civil disobedience that spread throughout the South.

Being so closely associated with(and therefore influenced by) someone who says things like "God d**n America" can hardly be called a mere "distraction." Rather, it is very telling about that person''s true values and beliefs.

McCain will have to do the same thing you do, Mr. Obama, engage the experts and put together a plan.

I don''t know what money Mr. Obama thinks he''s going to use to solve the economic crisis. He says he''ll save money by eliminating the Iraq war.! But good God, we''re already trillions in debt for the Iraq war and will be paying it off for 30 years! Again, my question is what money is he going to use?

It would appear to me that YOU should be more concerned about things that really matter, like this Economy of this nation going right down the tubes. It''s time to get serious here and some old black minister IS not going to make or break our economy. Another 4 years of Trickle Down will. I''m sorry you freaks can''t get over your attitude about race and I''m sorry you feel you must USE this against Obama but right now WE''D better be thinking about putting food on the table there sparky. Obama is exactly right, McSame hasn''t a clue about the economy or what to do about it. Sieg Heil Bush

Now come on! You think this "Trickle Down" garbage is going to work? How many times do we try this insane economic plan before we accept the fact it''s a complete and absolute failure. McSame says he''s going to continue the same failed policy, Obama say''s we need to take on the Clinton type policy. Duh?? One produced 8 years of prosperity like none we''ve seen in a long long time, a Balanced Budget AND a surplus CLINTON wanted to us to pay back Social Security. It''s time to put the knives away folks.. it''s time we started thinking about America. The Republican''s and their policies have been a complete FAILURE!!

28% of Clintons supporters say they would cross over and vote for McCain rather than Obama. 18% of Obama''''s supports would do the same.

PRINCETON, NJ -- A sizable proportion of Democrats would vote for John McCain next November if he is matched against the candidate they do not support for the Democratic nomination. This is particularly true for Hillary Clinton supporters, more than a quarter of whom currently say they would vote for McCain if Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee.

How can anyone sit in a church where the minister says, for instance, that the U.S. government invented the AIDS virus to kill blacks? Obama may have been too young or too naive at some point along his 20-year relationship with Wright, but eventually, shouldn''''t the man who became an Illinois state senator and then a U.S. senator and then a presidential contender have spoken up before he was forced to? - - http://www.realclearpolitics.com/article

HILLARY CLINTON - READY TO LIE ON DAY ONE !!!!

First she denies that she was pro NAFTA. White House schedules have now been released, showing she held several high profile meetings to endorse NAFTA.

Second she tells outright lies about her bullet dodging trip to Bosnia.

The big problem for Hillary is that the American people know how easily the Clintons lie. Taking a leaf from Bill she will say: Well, it depends on how you define "sniper fire" and "ran". And then we will hear her say I DID NOT HAVE MILITARY RELATIONS WITH THAT SNIPER.
Misspeaking is one thing, repeating it over and over makes it a FLAT LIE !!

She cannot win the Democratic nomination without causing a civil war in the Democratic Party. Her recent actions, especially comparing herself to, and praising, McCain while undermining Obama, make it appear that she is willing to do just that -- split the party in two. Seriously, can you imagine McCain saying that that he had a lifetime of experience, Hillary had a lifetime of experience, but Romney didn''t? That would never happen. It''s unacceptable. And it has to stop.

I get that it sucks to lose. But, it happens. Hillary, drop out with your head up high. Unless of course you''re ducking sniper fire again

PEOPLE WITH NOTHING TO HIDE DONT USUALLY HIDE !!

Why wont Hillary release her tax returns? If Hillary can loan 5 million dollars to her campaign then surely the voters have a right to know the source of her funding.

The main excuse we''ve gotten so far is that Hillary Clinton just has too much on her plate. "I''m a little busy right now," she said during the Ohio debate. "I hardly have time to sleep. But I will certainly work toward releasing, and we will get that done and in the public domain."

That was three weeks ago. Two weeks ago, Howard Wolfson promised the returns would be released "on or around April 15." But weren''t the returns completed and filed a long time ago? Doesn''t Clinton''s accountant have time to print them out and make some copies (note to Clinton''s accountant: many Kinko''s are open 24 hours).

In short, it''s well past time for Hillary Clinton to be as "vetted" as she claims to already be -- and to have this vetting done now by Democratic voters rather than later by GOP hit squads. She needs to live up to the standard she laid out for Rick Lazio, the opponent in her 2000 Senate race. At that time, she hypocritically said it was "FRANKLY DISTURBING" that Lazio was holding back on releasing his tax returns and she even sent a staffer dressed as Uncle Sam to taunt him during campaign stops.

What a difference eight years -- and tens of millions of dollars (some of them from questionable Arab deals) -- can make.

Only Clinton has the brains, work ethic and experience we need ASAP to get us out of the huge messes that await the next President. What do Democrats do when they finally have a uniquely qualified, experienced candidate?
They go for a big unknown, inexperienced guy who copies almost all of Clinton''s policies and gives a great speech. And it doesn''t seem to matter that he doesn''t hold his own life to the same standards as his well crafted speeches. It is truly mind boggling.

We have ONE man out there right now who has the support and ability to unite this nation AND bring in a NEW economic plan, that''s Obama. Assume Rev. Wright had all the facts correct, to those who defend Rev. Wright here is Rev. Wright%u2019s logic:
1. Americans should not be indignant about the 9/11 attacks on WTC because our government had done something worse in the past.
2. Americans should not pay too much attention to the disappearing of the white Natalee Holloway in Aruba because there are much more black girls who died in Darfur of Sudan everyday.
Conclusion :
1. We should not be grieved and paid too much attention about the casualties and displacement of Katrina because there were much more casualties and displacement in the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
2. We should not feel sorry for a homicide of a black girl because there had been homicides of white girls.
3. You should not care too much for your wife or children when they were sick or had an accident because much more families in this world are broken and suffering.
4. We should not care too much for the suffering of any human being we know because too many we do not know had died and suffered in the second world war.
OBAMA HAD 20 YEARS OF THIS BRAIN WASHING.

I am an American black male who is 41 years of age, and who grew up in Macon, Georgia. I have lived away from my place of birth for over half of that time, and upon a recent visit I was struck by two things: 1. The number of blacks and whites that were really hanging out together like close friends would. 2. The advances that blacks had made in all avenues of business, and the congeniality of whites living in this environment.

Notice I put that I am an AMERICAN first. I know who I am, but I also know where my loyalty should lie. Mr. Wright seems to have misguided loyalties for this country, and due to Mr. Obama%u2019s association, I would have to conclude that his may be also. I am a fan of Bill Cosby, we as black AMERICANS need to gain a more OBJECTIVE viewpoint of the world, and our place in it!! I personally was never a supporter of Obama, but like others you have to give him is due; He is very intelligent, articulate, and an excellent speaker. To look at this election OBJECTIVELY, would be to acknowledge that part of the hope that white people saw in Mr. Obama is the fact that maybe he was a great deal more color blind than he seems to be (not an agitator like previous minstrels, the likes of Jesse Jackson). Obama%u2019s association has cost both him and us dearly, the opportunity to bridge the black-white divide even further has been lost this time around, and who knows for how long. Obama has disappointed many for pretending to be a uniter when he was just more of the same; a politician, with a chip on his shoulder!! The left leaning liberal media has a lot to do with this not being exposed until now, and we should blame them for not ferreting this out sooner.

John McCain claims:

"some kind of massive bailout that is a needless expenditure of taxpayer dollars is obviously something that I don''t support."

Silly man. Isn''t it obvious that he supports the Iraq war?

I saw those reports, Jester, and Brazille''s interview on ABC.

Richards lost all credibility, and Brazille''s interview turned into a mush mouthed talk and backed down from her previous rhetoric.

They all tried to mush mouth their way thru it.

Obama%u2019s greatest gifts are his charm, his charisma and his oratory skills. Some of the most dangerous leaders in history have had all three of these %u201Cgifts.%u201D They have the power to move a crowd. But character still counts, and he has been shown to have a very poor character. Last week, during all the hullabaloo with Wright he quietly admitted having more dealings with Rezko than he formerly admitted. His first book about his father has been determined to be largely mythical (this was discussed at length by the Daily Mail last year). During his initial TV tour last Fiday evening, he denied knowing about Wright%u2019s inflammatory remarks and he contradicted himself (when he saw that no one believed him) during his %u201CGreat Speech.%u201D Despite the fact that the speech was brilliant in its style and delivery, it was largely an apologia and an attempt to manipulate people by playing on %u201Cwhite guilt%u201D and diverting the subject from the exteme anti America speech that one often hears in the black liberations churches %u2014 speech that is tied to the message of the Left %u2014 to race, which he knows is still an %u201Cuntouchable topic.%u201D

Crossover republicans have already said they won''t vote for Obama. Neither will most of HIllary''s supporters. The DNC knows this. And the popular vote will come into play even more.

The DNC is in a mellova hess, no doubt about it!

Polls don''t mean krap! They target the pollsters to make their poll say whatever they want to.

Voters are the only thing that counts.

You are right, votes ARE the only thing that count!!! Obama is aware of that too, thats why he is leading in the popular vote. Someone should tell Hillary that the presidency cant be annointed to her, she actually has to get the most votes, which would translate into delegates to win.....

Buyers borrowed too much money and cannot pay the interest. Now there are mass foreclosures, and senators are talking about taking your money to pay for your neighbor''''s McMansion, even though no one in the US has been made homeless by foreclosure. In fact, forclosed owners end up far better off: they go reap large savings every month, since it costs less than half as much money in rent as they were paying to "own" the very same thing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you have sort of figures or facts to backup this assertion?

Yeah, dont help your neighbors, right? Help the predatory lenders!!! This is the kind of krap that people are sick of. Class warfare against those in need. The good christains in this country dont want their tax money going to help their neighbors save their homes. We cant have universal healthcare because we dont want to look after those who cant afford to look after themselves. Its all fine until it hits home, when you or one of your relatives come down with cancer and the insurance company wont cover most of the expensives and you lose your home paying for cancer treatments......

McCain has dementia. Hillary has a Republican evil twin sister. Obama is the only one who makes sense in this *ucked up mess of a country that George and Cheney have made. That''s my poll.

Dont believe the hype....if Hillary lead in anything, she would be shouting it from every rooftop!!! Her campaign has been trying to find something that she is leading in for weeks, but with no success. They even brought up electorial votes!!! How ridiculous!!! There are no hidden numbers, dream on.....

Yeah, she does. RealClearPolitics isnt adding Michigan in their popular vote, just Florida. Hillary is in fact in the lead with the popular vote.

She doesn''t have to shout it from the roofs. The DNC is the only one where those votes will count. They can''t disenfranchise those voters, and they know it.
