(AP)  Gov. David Paterson said Monday he used cocaine in his 20s and smoked marijuana when he was younger.

In reference to cocaine, Paterson, 53, said in a television interview that he "tried it a couple of times" when he was "about 22 or 23."

"And marijuana probably when I was about 20," he said on the NY1 cable news station. "I don't think I touched marijuana since the '70s."

He said "more Americans have tried a lot more during that period of time and gone on to lead responsible lives and hopefully have lived their lives to their fullest."

Paterson was lieutenant governor under Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who resigned this month amid a prostitution scandal.

Last week, Paterson and his wife, Michelle Paterson, disclosed they each had committed adultery several years ago during marital strife. The couple were separated for a "couple years" at the time, David Paterson said Monday.

In Monday's interview, Paterson pointed out that he had acknowledged to a television journalist after a 2006 gubernatorial Democratic primary debate that he had used illegal drugs.

The NY1 interviewer, Dominic Carter, noted that few people paid attention to Paterson's revelation in 2006 because he was running for lieutenant governor.

Get it all out. Did you ever cheat on a spelling test when you were 11 or steal candy from a baby? Ever speed in a school zone? Call your mother a dirty word? Take two newspapers from the machine? Don''t make us hurt you, Guv!!

Drugs are good for your mind, body and soul.
those who have chosen a life of complete sobriety have done themselves a great disservice.

If you haven''t experimented with drugs in the past then you can not speak with conviction and sincerity about the subject.

also, Michelle if you are legally blind, how are you reading this right now?

also, how many fingers am I holding up

MichelleM99: Never done any drugs? Alcohol? Caffeine? Tobacco? Prescription Drugs? If so, you are one of the few in the country. Despite what groups such as the Partnership For A Drug Free America would have you believe, the vast majority of people in the US of A take drugs. At least it appears so by my 50+ years of living.

I have never done drugs never and I am appalled that a blind person has. I am legally blind and we as blind folks must not lower to that. I do hope he can put them demons away and realise the sighted watch others like a hank. They do. I do hope he can do his best as gov. He is a role model for the blind in his state.

he is evolving from a LIBERAL mindend person to a responsible person (if there is one). That is what happens when said person actually stops caring just for just himself.

So what. Does anyone care? Let''s worry about what politicians have done lately, not when they were kids. I thought this was a news outlet. This is not news.

If he had admitted these problems and then been elected anyway, I have no problem.
He''s doing it now because he knows his life is now under scrutiny and that these things would probably come out.
I could lie to prospective employers about my record and probably get away with it for anything except jobs requiring an in depth background check.
If an employer asks I tell them. Unfortunately it''s a question on most employment applications. I''m honest about it. I could probably pass because it was 35 years ago and my record has been spotless since then.
I''ve actually had employers check and not find it.
Most companies only go back 7-15 years.
The problem in some cases is their insurance companies. They have a non-felony clause. It doesn''t matter to them that I have a great work record and have only taken 3 sick days in the last 20 years. How many of you have watched the SuperBowl.
I was the guy in the satellite truck responsible for the World Feed for SuperBowls 33,34,35 and 36. I also provided 2002 World Cup Soccer coverage for the Brazilian team in Japan, six weeks of torture. 800,000,000 viewers depending on me to do my job, and millions of dollars of advertising at my fingertips. I could have made a whole lot of people irate and gone down in history with the "Heidi" incident just by pushing a button. Now I can''t find a job because of the economy and my 35 year old record? Yes they need to be held to the standards they enforce.

A good moral politician. Are we cleaning house yet, or what? Who cares what party, criminals shouldn''t become representatives.

exCoachKen..."we should demand a history of better decision making from our Governors and Presidential candidates" Are you kidding? What kind of decision have you made over the years? Everyone makes a stupid decision every now and then. If we only employed or elected people with squeeky clean "histories" nobody would be employed and certainly nobody would ever be elected. Get off your high horse.

[A great law would be to have politicians tested for drugs and have drug dogs going through the government offices and government cars. Drug test those holding office.]
[Posted by rushlimpdrug at 11:10 AM : Mar 25, 2008]

why don''t we just start in your neighborhood ... and we send teams in to search everyone''s house, research their past ... apply today''s standard to yesterdays action ... and incarcerate anyone who doesn''t live up to the ''standard of the day''?

then we''ll move to the next neighborhood ... *** the idea of freedom and pursuit of happieness ... since that''s obviously the same for everyone ... and some government *** can define what the standard should be.

[I agree with you....an adulterer and druggie replaces the other adulterer and druggie running New York......why do the citizens of New York elect such people.....?]
[Posted by navyjimfl at 11:39 AM : Mar 25, 2008]

maybe they can elect a alleged ''man of god'' who plays w/ little boys ... or maybe one who doesn''t respect the rule of law and pisses on the constitution daily. is this better?

at least he''s honest about who he is/was.

That doesn''t surprise anyone.
Just look further south,In New Orleans-that incompetent fool, who left 100 school buses get washed over, and hundreds of his fellow citizens to die-he''s still mayor.
Some say he''s the local mafia capo-but that''s another story.
