The Lord's Boot Camp

A First-Time Look At 700 Kids Training To Become Christian Missionaries

  •  (CBS)

In the summer of 2007, Tabitha Taylor, Nicole Scrivener, and Valerie Smith were among the 700 kids who gave up the luxuries of iPods and cell phones to attend The Lord's Boot Camp. At the two-week, no-frills training camp in central Florida, the girls face physical and mental challenges as they prepare to embark on evangelical missions in the U.S. and Africa and spread the word of God.

"The Lord's Boot Camp," a collaboration between CBS News and Loki Films, producers of the Academy Award-nominated documentary "Jesus Camp," follows the three teens as they complete their training and go on evangelical missions here in the U.S. and abroad. (Read more...)

We assembled a panel of students from Staples High School in Westport, Conn., to watch "The Lord's Boot Camp" and to share their reactions. Watch their discussion below.

I have never heard that Mormons believe they can become a god.

I struggle with whether Mormons will go to Heaven or not myself. The fact that they believe Jesus is the Messiah is all the Bible really says. But the Book of Mormon claims many other things and it does say not to add or take from the Bible, but that is no different than what the Catholic church has done by adding stories like Alexander the great to the Catholic bible. So I see no reason why Mormons would not go to Heaven.

Noel687, I challenge you on the topic of Mormons being Christian. We believe in the Bible to be the word of God, as well as the Book of Mormon. We are Christian, as the name of the church states, the CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints. Don''t be ignorant, please do your research.

thats it no more engagement!
to clarify and give reason to some unnessasary comments like kids can''t or are too young to make a reasonable decision about Jesus is absolutely crazy. i made a very early profession of faith, about three-four yrs old. sure i didnt know all the details that i know now, but the way my mother gave the clarity about Jesus loving me that he was willing to die for the whole world, and the devotion my parents gave Him i also wanted this same friend. which i began little by little to learn that he is also my Lord and Savior. so to say that kids cant make reasonable decisions is more than possible through the Holy Spirits illumination and revelation. The truth of the matter is that no one not even adults or reasonable people are able to come to the Savior without the Holy Spirit.

I attended the Lord''s Boot Camp in the summer of 1993 and went on a housing building mission to the jungles of Papua New Guinea. I think the point that a lot of people miss about teen missions is that it''s as much, if not more, for the benefit of the kids as for the people they go to visit for a short time.

Teen Missions is absolutely a life-altering experience... at least it can be. If you don''t believe me, check out my book at http://www.eleefrench.com.

This was a good show. I would love my grandchildren to do this when they are of age. My grandson always has many soul searching questions about God for me when I visit. This is what Jesus wants us to do, to help people who are suffering in the world. God will help Nicole to keep clean because she made the right decision, to go back and help people.
You should also see this show about real miracles happening TODAY in our time. Things are happening to people, and even myself-jesus helps me when i pray for help. He broke my arm and made me change, and from that someone else was effected and he is changing his thoughts. If Nicole stays close to Jesus like people she will have it easier with her addictions, that we cannot change once we are ruined should not stop us from asking, and thanking God the father and his son who are so filled with love for us their children, for help. But they are actually doing the will of God when they help people like they are doing.
Just saying that you believe in jesus and that he died for our sins is Good!
I never saw an atheist help people in Africa?

WOW....I was so shocked to see this on our local TV station. I was so very pleased with this show and how it helped these young men and women to know the LOVE of Jesus Christ. Thank you so much for sharing this story with US. I wish you would have more of these wonderful stories on. And if we want to learn more about these camps who do we contact or do you have a website? I Truely Loved this SHOW!

Thank you again

Way to go "Lord''s Boot Camp"! We are in shock that CBS gave up prime time to view the camp. Thank you and please offer more Christian, family valued programming. I am a Christian raised Baptist now Church of God, teacher, wife, and mother of 2 (7 & 9. My husband and I fear for the future of our children in this corrupt, selfish world. It was refreshing that the world was offered an "alternate" child rearing that was not polar opposite of the ten commandments. I loved the enthusiasm and spirit Tabby had in the program to reach others for Christ.

In 1962, when prayer was taken out of public schools, the worst problems encountered were chewing gum and throwing paper wads. However, now we are sending our children to war zones that we call public schools. I find it refreshing in a world where we are attempting to remove God from our very history, that CBS decided to clearly and unmistakenly show that God is alive and well and using young people willing to follow Him for purposes greater than themselves; all the while being a positive influence in our world. Thank you CBS!

Nowhere in the Bible does it say to pray and you will be saved. This doctrine was started in the 1800''s by Charles Scoffield (Scoffield Bible fame). In the 1st century adults that understood what they were doing were "cut to the heart" and baptized after they changed their ways (repented). Acts 2:37-38 1 Peter 3:21 2 Timothy 4:1-5
These people may be well intentioned but they should leave kids alone. Minors can''t vote, drink alcohol, or have *** for a reason. For the same reasons is why they should choose religion for themselves when they are consenting adults. "The road to hell is full of good intentions."
