(CBS/AP)  Police in Chapel Hill say they have found additional surveillance photos of the suspect in the slaying of University of North Carolina student body president Eve Carson.

Chapel Hill Police Chief Brian Curran said Monday that detectives now have a photo of the suspect attempting to use Carson's ATM card at a convenience store.

Curran said the subject of that photo appears to be the same young man seen in two ATM surveillance photos released on Saturday. In those photos, the suspect is seen in a baseball cap and hooded sweat shirt driving a sport utility vehicle that may be Carson's Toyota Highlander. Detectives also believe a dark shape in the photo is a male passenger in the rear seat.

"We have been exploring ways to enhance the quality of this photo in an effort to learn more about this person," police said in a statement.

The photo clearly shows the driver of the SUV, who is wearing what appears to be a Houston Astros hat. Police Chief Brian Curran said Monday the hat could be a sign the still-unidentified suspect is a gang member.

"That's always been a possible scenario," Curran said.

Carson, 22, of Athens, Ga., was found last week lying on a street about a mile from campus. She had been shot several times, including once in the right temple. Police have said they believe she was the victim of a random act.

Curran played down speculation that Carson might have been in the back seat of the SUV - perhaps held at gunpoint - when the pictures were taken.

He said, "We've seen nothing to indicate that she is. We are not operating on that theory now," reports CBS affiliate WRAL. “I do not see her in the car.”

Officers recovered Carson's cell phone about 1-1/2 miles from the scene of her death, according to search warrants. Sprint Nextel helped police find the phone near a shopping center located on the main road that runs between Chapel Hill and Durham.

Police also retrieved Carson's laptop and memory cards from her campus office, according to the warrants. Investigators were using those, along with bank and phone records, to re-create the final hours of Carson's life.

Her SUV was found the day after her death, a few blocks from her home, but police said this weekend they have yet to locate her wallet or keys. Police have not said when the surveillance photos were taken or the exact location of the ATM machine, saying only it is in Chapel Hill.

Police said Monday they received a number of tips after releasing the photos on Saturday. The school's Board of Trustees, of which Carson was a member, has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in her death.

Crime Stoppers received more than 200 calls since the photos were released Saturday morning, Curran said.

Police said they received tips from the public throughout the weekend and were following those, but had not yet identified the man or men in the surveillance photos.

"It's circulating on Facebook and stuff, too," UNC student Luke Eldridge said. "There's Facebook groups about it, so hopefully someone will see it and call."

Photography expert William E. Mathis enhanced the color of the original black-and-white images for The Raleigh Chronicle in hopes of assisting in the investigation. Mathis said he noticed a dark spot in the photo and determined that it was the shadow of another person in the vehicle.

(Chapel Hill Police Dept./WRAL)
Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said Monday that the quality of the surveillance photos was especially high.

"This image is especially good; it's better than most that I see," Woodall said. "And I know they're hoping, and I certainly hope that it generates some leads, and I believe it is generating leads."

Woodall urged Chapel Hill residents to take precautions in the wake of the killing, although he expressed confidence that the case would be solved.

Investigators believe that Carson's killer, at some point, had access to her SUV, which was found a day after her death about a mile from the crime scene. Police would like to hear from anyone who saw the SUV on Wednesday or Thursday. The Highlander's Georgia license plate is AIV-6690.

Investigators still have no motive in the shooting death of Carson and urged individuals to call police at 919-968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515. Callers can remain anonymous if they wish.

Woodall said he hoped the $25,000 reward offered by the UNC Board of Trustees would "encourage" someone to come forward with information.

Well, crick, if these were not unarmed victim zones the criminals would not have such an easy time committing their crimes. But most schools and colleges will not allow concealed carry so the students and instructors are at the mercy of these criminals. I know The ONE who shall remain nameless (because the name changes almost daily) and many others will condemn me for saying this, but the simple truth is, if people cannot have weapons the criminals have already won. There have been many on here who say "the gun owners have no experience except shooting paper targets that aren''t shooting back". Well, most of the criminals are also not experienced at having their targets shoot back. I would prefer to have an opportunity to protect myself, my family and my property from the criminals. Remember, when SECONDS count the police are only MINUTES away.

These thugs are going to target girls. Why go for men when you have so many girls on a college campus that are easy pickings? You can''t stay inside the dorm or library 24-7. You have to go out. Just don''t take stupid risks. Rethink whether you want to dress like a h o o k e r. Don''t jog at night while listening to your IPod.

Soon as black boys reach puberty, you might as well get a prison cell ready for them. Not all of course. But a h e l l of a lot.

I invite you to prove me wrong.

Is this open season on college students? The local news--WRAL--is reporting breaking news that an NC State graduate student was robbed at gunpoint leaving class late this afternoon by two men wearing masks.

The NC State campus is not like UNC, where you can leave campus and walk across Franklin St. to restaurants and bars, etc. The NC State campus is pretty much closed off from the outside world by brick walls.

Geez, what a world.

Many police officers are well trained (aka well regulated) but they are not omnipresent. Many civilian gun owners are also well trained. Your denial does not change that truth.

RE: "The fact remains that millions of Jews did find refuge in Britain and North America."

I"m not sure if that is an accurate statement.

The great wave of Jewish immigration to the United States was before 1925.

During the Holocaust, Jewish immigration was restricted greatly (with tragic results) and it was not until 1948 that it was eased up.

The voyage of the St Louis (the "Ship of Fools") has already been alluded to.

I know about that shameful episode, which must have haunted FDR"s conscience.

The fact remains that millions of Jews did find refuge in Britain and North America.

It was the only hope then.

The Weimar Republic should have kept guns out of the hands of Hitler and his followers.

Some of the Brown Shirts actually had machine guns during the Beer Hall Putsch.

No historian, Jew or Gentile, claims the Jews could have defeated the Nazi Regime with private guns and vigilante methods. They were too outnumbered.

The only thing to do was for as many of them to escape to America or the British Isles as could.

And that is what they did.

So which would be closer to the truth:

The Movie of the Week, or the German Commander"s official report to Himmler ?

Answer: the Movie of the Week.

I should have been more skeptical of that figure of 16 Germans killed in the battle.

ibsteve2u, when you"re right, you"re right.

A valid point, I admit, since 16 does seem a miniscule figure.

"Officially 16 [Germans] killed in action and 85 wounded, according to the Jurgen Stroop''s [German commander"s report for Heinrich Himmler.] Edelman [Jewish source] estimated that up to 1,300 Germans and collaborators were either killed or wounded in the uprising."

Perhaps Edelman inflated his figure, but if we accept 1,300, it was still a lopsided battle.

It also says the Germans suffered 16 killed in the battle, the Jews over 50,000.

If that is what you call "beating the snot out of the Waffen SS" -- I"d hate to think how a more closely contested battle would have turned out.

By the way - aren''t you making that basic error that historians should never make?

That is, failing to take into consideration the fact that "the victors write the history"? Since the Germans both killed almost all witnesses at Warsaw and were surely motivated to suppress their true casualty figures in order to avoid encouraging any repetition of such resistance, you''d think you''d suspect their extremely low casualty figures.

You give a figure o 16 killed.

Common sense would make most people ask: "Why did the Germans take so long to overcome the resistance when they suffered, on average, only 0.5 KIA per day? Is that how the SS got their reputation for cowardice ( --- sarcasm)"?

No doubt he has seen movie or TV depictions of the Warsaw Uprising, where a single Jewish resistance fighter is seen mowing down hundreds of Nazi troops "Rambo style."

"Or look, they"re beating the snot out of the Waffen SS" he shouted at the screen. "See ? Guns would have saved the Jews from the Holocaust !!

I knew it !!"

Since there were only approximately 750 fighters in the ZOB (Zydowska Organizacja Bojowa) and they held off German police units and the Waffen SS, that is close enough for me, particularly in light of the disparity in the arms the two sides possessed.

Wikipedia (with external sources) says that too.

The Yugoslavs and Greeks (together more numerous than the Jews) did take up arms and resist the Nazis.

Their efforts were heroic.

Not one historian credits them with having much effect on the outcome of the war by "tying up German divisions."

As with the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, ibsteve2u believes the history lessons he gets from the "Movie of the Week" (like my satiric quoting of Kung Fu) rather than the hard facts of history.

Tell the other part:

Why was that? Because their governments turned into collaborators with the Nazis and, among other things, worked to disarm and/or betray any resistance to the Nazis.

It is always some "I want to be safe!" type who surrenders freedom - and believes they have the right to surrender your freedom, too.

This crime has nothing to do with the Holocaust. It and the Auburn student that was murdered are exactly what Bill Cosby and the black Harvard professor on Oprah were talking about. The black communities are destroying themselves within.
