What Are They Advertising?

Andy Rooney "Fashions" Himself Into An Ad Critic

  •  (CBS)

(CBS)  The segment was first broadcast on March 9, 2008.

The CBS News offices get an awful lot of magazines, but most of them appear to be for women.

The magazines contain tons of advertising, but the trouble is some of the ads are so vague, Andy Rooney wonders what they're actually trying to sell.

Watch below, as Andy the ad analyst peruses the pages for some answers.

Mr Andy Rooney
I would like to comment( as above ) about an e-mail I received with your name attached. This email whether it was said by you or not is on the money. I am so tired of us as Americans backing away from what America stand for. This email doesn't do that. I watch everyone of your comments and smile. No one is more outspoken than you and I wish that more people would be the honest and outgoing person that you appear to be. From the smallest to the largest--Thanks-Whenever we go back to America and what it stands for I think everything will get better. In God we do trust. We can't help everyone everywhere and still be America. We have become a country that is truly hurting from our very core. And if you are looking for someone who is still working hard in the trenches of our daily lives we are here in hometown America. We still believe in freedom and I truly wish we could really get help from our leaders in this time of financial ruin. Not reform of thing that we can't afford and don't want at this time. Thanks for you time. I hope someone reads this for what it is worth.

Today I received an email of a piece I am told CBS allowed Andy Rooney to broadcast a few weeks ago. It is not titled or dated. It begins with "I don't think being a minority makes you a victim...." and is followed by some slightly offensive conservative-type views. Are you familiar with it? Did he really broadcast this? Please let me know if this is authentic as it does not strike me as something he would have broadcast. I can forward the email to you if you have not seen it.

Dear Andy:
You are sometimes amusing and sometimes annoying. Ok, regarding the story on the ads in magazines, I really think people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. You know very little about fashion and you didn't like the ad with the lady with HAIR IN HER EYES,but have you checked the mirror, YOUR drooping doglike EYEBROWS ARE IN YOUR EYES, and this is not attractive if you are on TV! I don't get it! I don't think it's your trademark either.

I guess I must be in the minority, but I like Andy.

I know your business is to entertain, but is it in your blood to report facts? But in order to do that you have to find the facts. And judging what comes out now that%u2019s not in reporter%u2019s blood. (TEST) why! In America we have so many brilliant thinkers, and so many leaders in charge of Americas affairs who clams to protect us from terrorist, yet when it comes to outside forces hurting us economically (gas prices) nobody saw it coming and if they did nothing was done? Terrorist takes our lives! American elite takes our money and freedom! What ever happened to? Give my Freedom or Give me death!
