(CBS/AP)  Police have interviewed "persons of interest" but no arrests have been made in the shooting death of an Auburn University female student earlier this week, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Freshman Lauren A. Burk was found fatally shot on a highway just before her car was discovered in flames on campus Tuesday night, several miles away.

Burk, an 18-year-old from Marietta, Ga., was found wounded on Alabama Highway 147 around 9 p.m., and Auburn police said her Honda Civic was found engulfed in flames at the campus about 20 minutes later. She died later that night at a hospital.

Gov. Bob Riley's office is offering a $10,000 reward in the case, Stofer said.

"We have not named a suspect and are still investigating leads," Auburn police Capt. Tom Stofer said, adding that officials are remaining tightlipped because of the circumstances of Burk's death, reports the Journal Constitution.

Confusion and shock spread throughout campus quickly Wednesday morning, the Auburn Plainsman reported.

“I want to know what caused it, because obviously she was targeted,” Jeni Young, also a first-year student, told the newspaper.

About 80 students, mostly sorority sisters, gathered early Wednesday evening for a vigil in the parking lot where Burk's car was found. Some were crying and carrying flowers to leave on the spot where her car was discovered. They linked arms and formed a circle, leaning on each other, reports the Birmingham News.

Jay Seyfried, a friend of Burk's from high school, told CBS News affiliate WMAZ-TV in Macon, Ga. that he still can't believe that one of his closest friends is gone.

“She was just one of the biggest sweethearts. Friendly to everyone, outstanding and she loved to laugh,” he said.

An on-campus prayer vigil for Burk was being organized by her friends, and a memorial was being planned by her sorority, Delta Gamma.

"Delta Gammas across the country offer hope and friendship to Lauren's family and all who have been affected by this tragedy," the sorority's national office said in a statement.

An Auburn judicial affairs official told the Atlanta Journal Constitution the university is setting up a memorial service on campus on Monday.

@EyeSupremacy: Turn on the local news, fruitcake. In Metro Atlanta, 95% of the news concerning rapes, murders, etc are concerning black folk, and not all females either.

Shut your stupid mouth. Use your brain before you talk. THINK. OMG NOVEL CONCEPT: THINKING.

Please note the quotation marks around psychopaths - I was referring another poster to the long standing discussion on the other story on plusses and minuses of guns. I was not referring to gun owners as psychopaths myself.

I''m an Auburn student, and this is a terrible tradgedy that has really cast a gloom on the campus. What kind of *** would use the murder of a beautiful innocent girl to push his own slanted political agenda? Go to he11 "EyeSupremacy"

How could the victim be to blame , she was murdered while driving her car on the highway ?

Posted by ranger1948 at 08:27 PM : Mar 06, 2008

If she had oil in her back yard or it could bring trillions of tax dollars in corporate welfare, I''m sure the media would find a way.

How could the victim be to blame , she was murdered while driving her car on the highway ? This country should be safe to walk or drive anywhere buty it isn''t because of the liberals. I carry a gun, yes it is registered and i have a permit to carry. Simply because there are to many crazies running loose in the U.S. I have no desire to shoot, hurt or kill anyone, but if i have to to protect my family i will do so without hesitation. I am not some weirdo who gets off on carrying a firearm. I am retired from the military and police. I do not believe in war or killing.

Regarding the issue of guns. People kill, whether it be with guns or something else. Las Vegas has a great policy. When you move there you are required to bring in any handgun you own to the police department and register it. They do a balistics test at the same time on the weapon. Law abiding citizens do not mind having to comply with these type of requirements. England also has a gun law. If you rob a bank and get caught yopu get 10 years sentence, if you use a gun to rob the bank and get caught you get a 30 year sentence. Make the punishment fit the crime. Require thorough background checks of anyone purchasing a firearm, even if buying from an individual.

I agree with sbbm. EyeSupremecy...you need to cut the ***. If it''s not this, it''s something else. All your "comments" are fueling the racist fire. It doesn''t matter whether someone is black or white, the point is a life was tragically taken in the quiet unassuming town of Auburn...where I happen to go to school.

Clearly you aren''t up to date with your NATIONAL news. Right underneath the link for this article is a link referring to the "Memphis Massacre." That massacre included NINE African American individuals. So your point it not valid. And had you only read that article you probably would have questioned why African Amreicans are the only one targeted.

Get your stuff together before you go targeting sensitive articles like these. People have emotions and are reading this article in order to figure out why this innocent individual was murdered. The last thing that they want to read are your invalid comments about race/minorities. You know it''s not a sin to be sensitive regardless of race. Take your opinions elsewhere and get over your "race complex."

Blaming guns will never solve a single thing.
All it does is place the responsibility on an inanimate object rather than the criminal who uses it illegally.
I don''t know why some people don''t respect their own lives or the lives of others but blaming guns is just not going to solve the problem.
In a dangerous world good people need to be able to choose whether or not they want to defend themselves and having a gun and knowing how to use it properly and safely can be very helpful.

With the tons of drugs and millions of illegals that cross the border every year how can anyone think that banning guns would do anything but disarm the law abiding citizen while creating a new market for the criminals?

I don''t like the gun issue, but it is an issue.
I''m not aware of the gun numbers, but I have to say that a lot of these are probably unlicensed guns. I haven''t heard that they traced shell casings back to a gun since every other episode of law and order.
Sometimes yes, but anyone who is crazy enough to murder someone with a registered gun, it well ... crazy or has a death wish.
