Auburn police were investigating Tuesday's death of Lauren Burk as a homicide but made no immediate arrests.
"As soon as we know more we might release it, but what information we have now we're holding it close to our chest," police Capt. Tom Stofer said.
University officials advised students in an e-mail around noon Wednesday that there was "no indication of additional danger to campus or student safety." But the school said the police presence on campus had been increased.
Burk, an 18-year-old freshman from Marietta, Ga., was found wounded on Alabama Highway 147 around 9 p.m. Tuesday, and Auburn police said her Honda Civic was found engulfed in flames at the campus about 20 minutes later. She died Tuesday night at a hospital.
Gov. Bob Riley's office is offering a $10,000 reward in the case, Stofer said.
Confusion and shock spread throughout campus quickly Wednesday morning, the Auburn Plainsman reported.
“I want to know what caused it, because obviously she was targeted,” Jeni Young, a freshman in special education, told the newspaper.
An on-campus prayer vigil for Burk was being organized by her friends, and a memorial was being planned by her sorority, Delta Gamma.
"Delta Gammas across the country offer hope and friendship to Lauren's family and all who have been affected by this tragedy," the sorority's national office said in a statement.

- I have also read extensively on the holocaust and no reputable historian blames it on the lack of guns in the Jewish population. Posted by USBrit
Are you implying that the prevalence of gas chambers caused the holocaust? - Reply to this comment
- I would never say her problem was she did not have a gun and should have. The problem is there is too much violence. Guns are sometimes used in this violence. How do we stop the violence greybeard?

I agree. What I don''t see is anyone from the gun-hugging side coming up with any answer than arm the whole country. Then we''ll all have to stay indoors because every argument will be settled with a shooting. - Reply to this comment
- Schoolmast1 - Remember the poster who "outed" you said he''d been informed of your identity by a high ranking person at CBS. I suggest CBS out him/her asap otherwise blogs(?) like this will be useless.

- I actually hope that anyone with an inclination to do so will google all of this info. and enlighten everyone as to whether or not it''''s accurate. I''''m sure everyone is only interested in the truth, if there are discrepancies, by all means, straighten it out, but don''''t just argue about it because you don''''t like what it says. Hmm... Hmm... (USBRIT)

Well I see we''re back at it bright and early this morning. The reason I go on about numbers, and no I don''t know about Australia yet, is that the numbers in the US are just much higher than anywhere outside of South Africa and South America. So you can say Great Britain''s gun deaths rose by 20% last year sounds bad. A rise from 48 to 56 says what are you worried about. Per capita you are between 50 and 100 times more likely to be killed by a gun in the US than the UK.

- gunmastr1 However with all the crazy people running loose in the world,
gunmastr1 - There aren''t all that many crazy people running loose all over the world in developed nations like we have hear in the USA. If you gauge this craziness by levels of crime, violent crime in particular and incarceration rates - the insanity is not only coming from the criminals but from our government which hasn''t a clue, and out society at large which feeds this pathological illness not found on this scale in any other developed nation. - Reply to this comment
- When they catch this guy, I wouldn''t be surprised to hear that he has been involved in violent crime his entire life and well known to police. Our justice system puts every law abiding citizen at the mercy of any passing criminal, and there are millions of them just walking around.
Also, the murderer that committed this act deserves a swift trial and if found guilty, swift execution. But our stupid justice system is do bogged down with lawyers BS and a corrupt system, that justice is almost non-existent and almost never fair to the victims or their families. - Reply to this comment
- Most street killings are committed with illegal or stolen guns. Owning a firearm with a proper background check and liscensing process is every American''s right. Once the legal requirements are met people are Free to own guns. If stricter requirements are passed fine but don''t interferring with law biding people''s rights.

- no shallow solutions from the punks in the NRA about how she should have been carrying a gun.
Posted by greybeardvet
Punks huh, who says you are not a stereotipical punk yourself?
I believe the NRA does a lot of good for the right of the US citizens. If you feel good about giving up your rights so be it, move to Iran. If not get an education about he NRA before you pop off.

- Some studies say that CCWs instead of decreasing crime may actually INCREASE it!~

Show me these studies you reference. I think you are a liar. - Reply to this comment
- I won''''t say they condome murder but they do facilitate it since close to 70% of all murders are gun related and they promote guns.
Posted by ElCantante1
I agree and if those killers that killed with guns did not have a gun to use they never would have killed.
I think we should blame the medical association also, since most people who die in hospitals have seen a doctor.

I do not know why you are against gunowners. If you do nothing wrong then you have nothing to fear from legal gunowners. I fought for the right of choice so i have a right to my opinion and the right to bear arms. I do not hunt as i do not want to hurt animals or people. However with all the crazy people running loose in the world, i feel it is necessary to own and carry a concealed weapon. The streets are no longer safe for law abiding citizens. I don''t have alll the answers to fix the problems with society, but everywhere they banned guns the crime rate went up, everywhere they passed he right to carry the crimes went down, after a period of adjustment by the criminals, may they rest in peace. - Reply to this comment
- By the way, I would never recommend that a person carry a weapon unless they are trained and qualified. And, I strongly support a person''s right to do so if they are trained and qualified and they choose to do so.
