(AP)  In his first major public address since recovering from complications due to cancer, Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan said Sunday that presidential candidate Barack Obama is the "hope of the entire world" that the U.S. will change for the better.

Farrakhan, addressing an estimated crowd of 20,000 people at the annual Saviours' Day celebration, never outrightly endorsed Obama but spent the majority of the nearly two-hour speech praising the Illinois senator.

"This young man is the hope of the entire world that America will change and be made better," he said. "This young man is capturing audiences of black and brown and red and yellow. If you look at Barack Obama's audiences and look at the effect of his words, those people are being transformed."

Farrakhan compared Obama to the religion's founder, Fard Muhammad, who also had a white mother and black father.

"A black man with a white mother became a savior to us," he told the crowd of mostly followers dressed in Nation of Islam attire including long white suits and matching head scarfs for women and navy-colored uniforms with caps for men. "A black man with a white mother could turn out to be one who can lift America from her fall."

Obama's campaign spokesman Bill Burton said, "Senator Obama has been clear in his objections to Minister Farrakhan's past pronouncements and has not solicited the minister's support."

Farrakhan rebuilt the Nation of Islam, which promotes black empowerment and nationalism, in the late 1970s after W.D. Mohammed, the son of longtime leader Elijah Mohammed, moved his followers toward mainstream Islam.

Farrakhan has drawn attention for calling Judaism a "gutter religion" and suggesting crack cocaine might have been a CIA plot to enslave blacks.

In recent years, however, officials with the Nation of Islam have said they favor unity and tolerance among religions. Farrakhan now often quotes the texts of other religions, such as the Bible, in his speeches.

Farrakhan also leveled small jabs at Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama's rival for the Democratic nomination, suggesting that she represents the politics of the past and has been engaging in dirty politics.

Farrakhan's keynote address at McCormick Place, the city's convention center, wrapped up three days of events geared at unifying followers and targeting youth.

It had a remarkably different tone than a year ago, when Farrakhan made what was called his final public address at a Saviours' Day event in Detroit. The 74-year-old was recovering from complications from prostate cancer and months earlier had temporarily passed on leadership duties of the organization's day-to-day activities to an executive board.

In a letter to followers dated Sept. 11, 2006, he said he was seriously ill and had dropped more than twenty pounds. He said Sunday he once weighed as little as 158 pounds.

But over the past year, Farrakhan has been regaining strength and slowly increasing his public appearances, giving lectures at the Nation's Mosque Maryam on the city's South Side, speaking in churches about unity and granting occasional interviews.

"I spent most of the year working on the inside of the Nation," he said.

He told the crowd that he flew back to Chicago from one of his homes in Phoenix last week after complaining of pain and underwent many hours of medical tests. A Nation of Islam spokesman later told The Associated Press that the tests revealed no further problems.

"The Minister Farrakhan is back," said Ishmael Muhammad, an assistant minister at Mosque Maryam for 17 years who is largely expected to be Farrakhan's successor. "The doctors have even said it's truly a miracle, his recovery and health."

Muhammad said Farrakhan has assumed all his previous leadership duties at the Chicago-based Nation of Islam.

On Sunday, Farrakhan appeared healthy and joked that he's "a little on the pudgy side" at a robust 192 pounds.

"People are wondering 'Is he sick? How's he doing?"' he said. "I'm doing fine."

bizzz,

Hey, so are you negating the suffering of innoncent women and children. Why did white people treat other human beings so bad. How can a so-called human being rape, rob, and kill women and children for reason at all? What kind of mind would allow such evil to on for over 310 years? What kind of mind and heart after more than 150 years would make comments of how our own people sold us? Yes our brothers sold us because they thought that they would receive more gold than they were earning in their own country. We always have traitors Bendict Arnold types. But why did caucasian do what they did once we got on the ships. Caucasian treated their dogs better than they treated my people coming over here on the slave ships. Go and read "Roots".

Caucasian people would put our body parts in their pocket for souvenir. Would burn a human being at the stake and allow their children to watch. Please tell me are you any better than your fathers, by making such comments in light of the effect that it had on black people?

Peace

Chaz 08,

Thank you!!!

Finally someone who is thinking logically.

The sad true is that well over 60% of the hues of skin color in America is due to the rape of black women and girls during slavery. Thomas Jefferson raped black women and so did George Washington. This is actual fact. Now, multiply what they did just 10x.

So, once again thank you for you rising above emotion into reason and logic

Peace

croft777,
Remember the one drop rule that was law in this country? Master Fard''s mother was a caucasian woman and his father was a Black man. By the very law set up by the American government during the time he was here would qualify him as a black. Today, I guess the term is bi-racial. What makes Brother Farrakhan evil? How would you rate evil compared to one black innocent child raped and murdered by and adult? Is it wrong for a man to speak out for the hurt, pain and suffering of his own people? Is it wrong for Brother Farrakhan to say like the Jewish people say "Never again"? Jewish people never allow you to forget what happen to them and they never allow their children to forget. Don''t you think that we have the same right? Brother Farrakhan does not rob, kill or steal, what makes him evil?

Why is white america scare of the voice of Farrakhan? Be very careful how yor treat a person you just might be entertaining an angel.

Peace

Croft777,

You to have violated the Rules of Engagement. Such language and false comments. I would advise that you also visit the www.finalcall.com or www.noi.com. Your sources are not accurate and you should not slander Brother Farrakhan and try to connect him with terrorism and this is a bold face lie. Brother Farrakhan will never engage in or support any act of terrorism, nor does he teach us to do so.truth1919

Another thing, I don''t give false information. There is much information on Farrakhan. He is an evil man. There is a book called "The Islamic Invasion" by Robert Morey C 1992. I do know that the black Muslim movement was founded by Wallace D. Fard, its funny , he was a white man. then came Elijah Muhammad . Of course Farrakhan thinks that God manifested himself in both Fard and Elijah Muhammad, now he thinks Allah is manifested into himself. The man is a nut case. He believes he was encountered by a giant plane shaped whell, and that the white race are devils. Everything that comes out of Farrakhans mouth is evil, racist, and insane. The man thinks hes God, says he heals the sick and made the blind see...lol He took a large gift of money from Libyan dictator Khadafy to renovate the mosque in Chicago, hey they are buddies, and Khadafy is a known sponser of Terrorism throughout the world. If you want to believe in this ***, fine, but I know most people see it disgraceful, evil, and not normal.

Croft777,

We to have family in this country we help to build America. And caucaisan people put terror in us to make us build it. Let us deal with facts. I know you must recall how America was built. With the blood and flesh of Black people at the whip of a whiteman. It was lawful to do this in the U.S.A.

Now to hear you say such things about one Black man who speaks into the hurt and pain that caucasian caused is shocking to say the least.truth1919

So your a black muslim? Sounds like it. Your brother Farrakhan..lol

your ignorance amuses me buddy. For one, many of the African people sold their own people into slavery. They wanted those colorful glass beads around their necks.Don''t blame it all on the white folks. My ancesstors had nothing to do with the slave trade. Another thing, unless you were rich, you could not aford a slave. You should be glad that your not living over in Africa where there is so much chaos going on. Be thankful. If your black, you have more in common with us white folks then you do with those Africans over seas. I know a black man who was born in Africa, but it parents moved here when he was a baby, he said that as an adult with a family, he went to Africa, the place he was born. He was feeling Culture Shock, meaning the place was alien to him, he felt out of place. He said his home was in America.

The Founders of this country allowed slavery to go on for 310 years or more. Robbed Black people of their names, their God, their families, their language, etc

truth1919,
And where would you be today if not for the ugliness of our Founding Fathers who you despise? Would you be in Darfar, perhaps in Kenya or Nigeria chopping someones arm or leg off?
Would you be driving down the street in a car, going out to dinner or watching TV in an air conditioned room? Would you be wearing the clothes you have on?HOW EXACTLY MISERABLE EXACTLY WOULD YOU BE TODAY IF IT WEREN"T FOR OUR FOUNDING FATHERS??? IT''S NOT HARD TO IMAGINE HOW MISERABLE YOU WOULD BE. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS WATCH THE NEWS AND YOU"D SEE WHERE YOU''D BE

[Quoting Louis Farrakhan] "My mother told me that my father was a man named Percival Clarke, a man that I never really knew but that his father was a teacher and that lineage came from Portugal. I thought to myself if the lineage of my father was from Portugal then my father"s ancestors were among those Jews who found a home in the Caribbean..."

Any resemblance of the above to accurate genealogical research is purely coincidental.

Farrakhan is not the descendant of Portuguese Jews except in his goofy fantasies...

"Farrakhan made several controversial statements about race, including "White people are potential humans - they haven"t evolved yet" in March 2000, and "Murder and lying comes easy for white people" in 1994..."

----------------------------------------------------

I''m not trying to defend Farrakhan. But the idea that he does NOT have white lineage is just silly - just look at the guy. Most American blacks have White and Indian in them of varying degrees. There are many American Blacks who would never even be considered Black if they were born and raised in other countries.
All that other stuff about Yacub comes from their founder Fard, who interesting enough looks like any other White guy.
