Patrick said during his gubernatorial campaign a year and a half ago that words matter, like "I have a dream" and "all men are created equal."
Obama used the same lines Saturday night in Wisconsin. Obama said that Patrick suggested he use the lines to respond to Hillary Rodham Clinton's suggestion that Obama is more of a talker than a doer.
Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson accused Obama of plagiarizing Patrick, and that's particularly troubling since Obama's appeal is based in large part on his rhetorical skills.
"It raises questions about the premise of his candidacy," Wolfson told reporters in a conference call. Clinton told reporters late Monday evening: "If your whole candidacy is about words, those words should be your own. That's what I think."
Obama, D-Ill., says that's going too far.
"Now hold on a second. Let's see - I've written two books, wrote most of my speeches," Obama told reporters at a news conference after touring a titanium plant.
"I'm happy to give Deval credit, as I give credit to a lot people for spurring all kinds of ideas," he said. "But I think that it is fair to say that everything that we've been doing in generating excitement and the interest that people have in the election is based on the core belief in me that we need change in America."
Asked whether he wished he would have given him credit given the criticism he's facing, Obama responded: "I was on the stump, and he had suggested that we use these lines. I thought they were good lines. I'm sure I should have - didn't this time."
"I really don't think this is too big of a deal," he said. He said he's noticed Clinton using his phrases sometimes, like "it's time to turn the page" and "fired up, ready to go."
Obama focused on the economy during his trip to this economically depressed manufacturing region of Ohio. He promised he would end tax breaks for companies which move jobs overseas and use the money to give tax breaks to companies who invest in the United States.
At his news conference, Obama also said he didn't expect any immediate endorsement from John Edwards after his secret meeting with his former rival yesterday. "I think he's still mulling things over," Obama said.

- I have a new phrase- "Obama-bots"
Unlike "Bushbots", Obamabots have a bias liberal news outlet to protect him from any self inflicted damage. In fact, you don''t even need a platform to be an Obama-bot. All you need to do is repeat the phrase:
"Change & Hope, Change & Hope, Change & Hope, Change & Hope, Change & Hope, Change & Hope, Change & Hope, Change & Hope" - Reply to this comment
- [Finally the general election rolled around with the far left was just silly with the prospect of their shiny new candidate winning it all and they could hardly contain their excitement on election night. They awoke the next morning much to their dismay to find that their shiny new candidate had won only two states out of the whole country while the other side had won forty eight by a man who didn''''t have a chance. The winner was Richard NIxon and the liberal was McGovern.]

this is revisionist history. mcgovern had no chance to win in ''72 ... his first vp selection had to drop out due to rumours about his mental stability ... his next vp pick had virtually no govt experience ... mcgovern was known to be a poor campaigner ... all against a superior nixon campaign machine. - Reply to this comment
- Sorry but this is the truth. Barrark mis-leads his followers. He did not show up for the Iraq vote. He did not vote against the war... which he leads people to believe. It was a political postioning. DUH!
He is a puppet- He does not represent the poor or the struggling. He represents the educated elite. He travels in high educational circles. Sweet talkin orator that likes to lead a bunch of sheep. Educate yourself and really read Obamas voting record and read Hillarys. Picking Obama would be like having open heart surgery- and picking the new doctor that had new ideas and no experience. Not the seasoned veteran. Obama is not bad-give him time to learn.
I just don''''t want him learning on the job like Bush.
Haven''t you wondered why the Republicans are delighted Obama is doing well? They know they can win the election if McCain goes against him. Connections, and experience. It is not what you know- It is who you know. (Would give the author credit if I knew who said it) Unlike some people I know! Would not be good to do that at the United Nations Mr. Obama. Think we are embarassed now with Georges lack of prodocol. Old tradions of Honor, Respect, Humility should not be forgotten just for the hype of change. Change fellow Americans will happen no matter who is in the White House. Make sure those words- "just words" are not too Rehearsed and just lines of an act. I think Hillary Clinton is the real deal. - Reply to this comment

Interesting point of view. However, I have a couple of questions for you.
Is it better for us to spend another 5 or 6 trillion dollars that we will borrow from China and another 5,000 American lives so that when we leave the Islamic movement will take over anyway? All you need to do is look at the history of what happened in Vietnam.
We fought, spents billions, lost ten of thousands of Americans, left and the Viet Cong took over. The Arabs have been fighting between factions for thousands of years, so a 20 year occupation is not going to change that.
Perhaps you should credit Obama for having enough sense to leave and cut our losses. - Reply to this comment
- All Obama stands for is defeat of America in Iraq. Nothing else. Name one policy initative he has done. One. Can''t, can you, Obama supporters. Just point to the brainless Hollyweird celebs who back this boy.
And a wife who couldn''t find anything proud of being an American until this campaign. Pathetic.
I don''t like McCain and I have been pretty upfront about it, but if the Dems are so stupid as to nominate this guy, McCain will get my vote.
Frederick Douglass he ain''t - or as Abe Lincoln would tell him if he were alive today: "I knew Frederick Douglass. He was a friend of mine. Senator, you are NO Fred Douglass. - Reply to this comment

Anyone can file a suit, especially if they''ve got financial backing from a candidate''s political opponents. Looks suspiciously like another "swift boat" attack to me. Americans are getting tired of campaign slander. Peddle your trash somewhere else. - Reply to this comment
- "President Obama? NO That doesn''''t sound right, maybe in Kenyan or something tribal."

Are you so shallow that you would base your acceptance on the sound of a name? It''s prejudice like yours that caused many immigrants to change their names to ones that sounded more Anglo. Would you vote for him if his name was Jones? Somehow I doubt that his name is the problem. - Reply to this comment
- No, race baiting, Islamo-baiting, and Atheist baiting was not enough.
Now it''s gay baiting.
One thing that the voters have made clear: this low road BS isn''t gonna make a damned bit of difference. You got any positive message from your candidate? No? I thought not.
Yeah, right and McCain is gay and fathered a black child......(2000 S.C. push poll)
Keep up with the fabrications, imbeciles. - Reply to this comment
- Obama is the only candidate that gives the country hope of getting out of Iraq. Clinton would be acceptable, but this country needs to move on from the Clinton and Bush years. McCain is a sad old Bush want-to-be war monger who hasn''t figured out that embracing Bush and Bush''s policies is not going to win the whitehouse for him.
