(AP)  A U.S. Marine accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in southern Japan was arrested Monday, but the suspect denied the allegation, police said.

Police took custody of Tyrone Luther Hadnott, 38, of Camp Courtney in Okinawa, an Okinawa police official said on condition of anonymity citing policy. Hadnott's hometown was not immediately available. He has not been charged.

Under a mutual security pact, the United States has about 50,000 troops deployed around Japan. Most of them are based on Okinawa and tensions over potential accidents, land use and troop-related crimes are common.

In 1995, the rape of a schoolgirl in Okinawa by three American servicemen sparked large-scale protests. The three served prison terms of six and a half to seven years.

Hadnott, a Marine staff sergeant, is alleged to have offered to take the girl to her home on his motorbike on Sunday, but then took her to his house instead, another local police official told The Associated Press.

When the girl started crying, he said he would drive her home, but he is accused of then raping her in a car, the official said, also speaking on condition of anonymity in line with policy.

Hadnott told investigators he forced the girl down and kissed her, but that he did not rape her, the official said.

Lt. Gen. Bruce Wright, commander of U.S. Forces in Japan, said the U.S. was aware of the "serious allegations in Okinawa."

"(We) are closely monitoring the situation while fully cooperating with Japanese officials," Wright said in a statement. "If the allegations are true, our hearts are with the victim and family."

Anything that may have happened 60 years ago has no relevance on a possible rape of a 14 year old girl today. With that kind of thinking maybe they should put all white people into camps like we did to Japanese American CITIZENS! Anyway this has nothing to do with WW2, but has to do with a possible rape of a 14 year old girl. If this guy didn''t mess around with a 14 year old girl to begin with then none of this would be happening.

When my Grandfather was in Japan, as a Marine (he was a Highschool Dropout and did not have a GED), he very much used Japan''s PROSTITUTES that are there to "service" our "service people". This is the SAME SENERIO as any other place American service people are at, including our very own bases here in the good ole'' USA. These service people are doing everything that normal citizens are doing, only we hold them in higher regards because of what they do, just like cops and politicians.
Who cares which war is a real war? Our service people are still over there fighting and dying. Just because Congress didn''t "declare war" doesn''t mean that the service people are just over there for a holiday.
Oh, by the way, if your a Marine now, and caught using drugs, you are sent on a ship in the middle of the ocean until the proceedings to get you kicked out of the Marines are complete. Back in Vietnam, our Service People were smoking loads of dope! My husband tried to join the Marines and couldn''t because he does not have a regular diploma. Oh, and you can not join the military if you have any charges pending, and any charges on the books unless they are approved charges, like speeding as a 16 year old, or something minor. Druggies, non-educated, criminal, and poor are absolutely NOT the only people in the military. And, guess what, some join as a SERVICE TO THEIR COUNTRY! They have pride, unlike the people who put them and the Country down.

I lived on Okinawa back in 1949 to 1951, and even then you had some bad army personnel. I remember hearing my parents talk about several cases that took place during that time frame and they were not pretty either. I do not know what ever happened to the perpetrators but they were prosecuted for their crimes. Of course back then they were tried by court martial and not Okinawan courts.

Right now the military is taking anyone they can get that breaths and are willing to go where ever they are sent which is why you are hearing about more crimes against the civilian population of various countries. They are not checking out the enlistees the way they should. Back when there was the draft, you had bad ones get drafted, but they were soon discharged when it was found out they had criminal records. Now they are getting waivers which is not to the good of the service or this country.

All you ex-mil people harping on freedoms in America being secured by people who served their country:
That was last true from 1941-45 when we were engaged in a world war. No other war since then has been a matter of defending America. Not Korea, not Viet Nam, not Grenada or Panama or the Balkans or Iraq (either time) And before you point out 9/11 and Afghanistan (which I think was justified) that was far from being a real attack on America as Pearl harbor was. And if you think all those wars were justified, then why was war never declared?

"Hadnott told investigators he forced the girl down and kissed her, but that he did not rape her..."

So, is this guy believable? A 38 year old who sexually assaults a 14 year old girl? And that''s what forcing her down and kissing her is, so by his own admission he AT LEAST sexually assaulted her.

If it''s determined to be rape, have a Japanese swordsman get out a katana and castrate him in public! Military people have to be taught they don''t have impunity in other countries, especially countries of our ALLIES!

Let me also are honourable persons that served. They are the ones that thanked. The bad asres they can clean out the loo. Let not pick on our spelling..congress only declared 2 wars that being ww1 and ww2. The rest illgal. The American Rev (ILLGAL) War started in the state of MA 1775-83. to tell HM George this nation was going to do as she saw fit right or wrong ye can''t stop her.

frankbowers, whenever I hear that someone abandoned their career after a lengthy period of service, as in your case, I often wonder why. After reading your diatribe I feel reasonably sure that you were discharged because you had reached the peak of your abilities. Judging from your atroscious grammar, 6th grade spelling level and illiterate, disjointed comments, I''d say you were involuntarily released without any option to continue to serve. Compared with the civil population, the military has a lower crime rate than does the civilian world. Like richzurb and gunnerv1, I entered service out of high school and exited 21 years later with 3 college degrees, all earned after hours and on weekends. As a personnel officer it was my job to get rid of dead wood, such as yourself. CWO USASA Retired.

Frankbowers You my dear Sir are full of S*H*I*T. The scum puppies are weeded out real early. Felons are not allowed in, and don''t get any DUI''s or your out in a flash. Those who have less than a HS Diploma are given one year to obtain a GED. When I enlisted (1964) I too was an HS dropout just because I was a lazy s*h*i*t and was just spinning my wheels. 21 years later I left as an E-8, obtained my BS and am now in the 6 figure income bracket also.

having served 8 years with 3 honorable discharges I wish to enter the fact. due to gw bush''s desire to fight a war of no need in Iraq for theoil and what ever probabley Iseral we have lowered the bar to thelowest level ever. The US of A is allowing drug addicts, rapist, and jail birds as well as any moron in the service today and then are giving the anytwhere from10,000 to 30,000 to enlist and up to 50,000 to re enlist. Yes, we have went to the bottom to get the young and new ones. Mr. richzurb (spelling might be off the fact is not) might wish to defend the honor of a deseter gw bush and dic cheney the draft dodger, I know he was a deseerter there in Houston in 72 I lived there while and when the QP''s looked for him as drugs was not allowed and his blood was full of them. You might wish to ask Kay Hutchinson, the Tx senator whe was the disjokey at the 3 Palms and the 4 Aces down on telephone road and she knew him well, if you get the drift of knowing him well. the best of good byes to all Frank Bowers in Austin, Tx

The military is full of rapists and gang bangers lately, it''''s because they have low standards and are desperate to get idiots to go die in irak.

andrew_693 who is the idiot it is spelled Iraq not irak. I spent 20 years in the military and trust me I am not the bottom of the barrel. I have a master%u2019s degree and a six figure salary. So go cash your welfare check and leave those that secure your freedom to be a moron alone since you have no idea what you are talking about. Remeber the freedom you enjoy was secured not by the pen but by the sword carried by those that are brave enough to serve thier country.

pam1sadge WHAT young girls don''t make this stuff up?
As much as i pray that you were right the fact is - you are not. It is becasue of the few who do report a false rape that many rapes go unreported. As many as 2 in 3 rapes are not reported becasue the victim is afraid of being told it did not happen or people thinking she made it up.
Where are you from never never land? People do lie. Someone is here and I pray that it is the victim.

We also have Army, Air Force and Navy in Japan. We are still in Japan for strategic reasons (China and North Korea the big reasons), The 7th fleet is based in Japan and they spend a lot of time in the Persian Gulf under the 5th fleet.

Someone refresh my memory... why do we have 50,000 marines protecting Japan? Are we still so intent on securing the victory of ''45 that we can''t use the fine troops elsewhere in the world?

The rate of crime for military in Japan is a bit high due to the fact a lot of people don''t want to be over seas.

andrew_693 - You are an ignorant S O B. The military is definately a reflection of society as a whole. I was a Military Police Investigator (CID) for 15 years and the crime rate involving military personnel was no higher than the statistics reported by the FBI for civilian offenders. And to claim the military service members are the dregs of society is Stupid, Ignorant and Offensive. Don''t bad mouth people who serve until you have at least done the same. I have never agreed with this war but until EVERYONE stands up and votes for a change your stuck with what we have, good or bad.
