Mya Set To Debut On The Great White Way
The Pop Star Will Portray Velma Kelly In Broadway's "Chicago" This Spring
NEW YORK, Feb. 11, 2008
(AP) Mya struts into the long-running Broadway revival of "Chicago" this spring, ready to portray Velma Kelly, Roxie Hart's cohort in criminally entertaining show-biz razzle-dazzle.
The woman who is known for such hits as "Case of the Ex," "Ghetto Superstar" and "Lady Marmalade" will join the musical at the Ambassador Theatre for nine weeks only, May 12 to July 13.
"It's something I always wanted to do; sing, dance, act and tell a story," Mya said in a telephone interview. "It's probably the ultimate complete dream for me."
Mya has seen the stage show more than a half-dozen times in the last couple of years. She had a small role in the movie version, too.Photos: Celebrity Circuit
The performer is getting ready by doing a lot of cardio, muscle strengthening, stretching and making sure she takes her vitamins. Rehearsals start in April.
"I have gone through all the material with the show's musical director and everything is suited for my key. We don't have to do any transposing. It's perfect."
Mya's Roxie Hart will be Bianca Marroquin, a veteran of the Fosse-Kander and Ebb musical in New York and on the road.
"I don't experience butterflies anymore, although I believe I will on opening night," Mya said. "It will be fun."
