Impressions From Super Bowl 42

It's a tough assignment but someone had to do it: Andy Rooney took a trip to Super Bowl 42 to get a first-hand look at the annual spectacle.

(And it helps of course that Andy is a huge football fan and attends Giants home games, even if they are not played in New York, but New Jersey!)

Hi Andy,

You said last night that New England should be call Boston Patriots! How about the Jets and Giants, I think they should be called New Jersey Jets and Giants(since they both play at their home stadium in the meadow lands! Why not do a story about names of teams?

Good Morning Andy,

I''m 44 and have enjoyed your segment since I was a kid watching with my parents. You remind me of my mother. Her Dad immigrated from Ireland and her mom had Irish immigrant parents. They settled in Pittsburgh area and worked in the steel mills. She''s pushing 80 now. All the sensible "raised in the poverty of the depression" stuff is what I love about her. She can be annoying as h e l l sometimes too. If I call her with any complaint short of a head amputation, it will ellicit a lecture about counting your blessings and walking a hundred miles to school with holes in your shoes. I love her, but she drives me crazy. Have a great week.

Andy since your daughter lives and works here in Boston you should know that the Patriots do not play in Boston. And as a former (thank goodness) New Yorker, I know the Giants actually play in New JERSEY, not New York. For that matter so do the Jets. Why not change THEIR names?

I am a big fan. Your take on the football was interesting. Alas, I do not follow professional sports due to complete disinterest; I am sorry a pig was killed to make the ball - why can''t they be made synthetically? Or perhaps they are, that''s how long it''s been since I discussed sports with anyone...and I am lucky that my male companion is also disinterested, so I don''t have to suffer - but my thought is you were right not to buy the hat. Those commercial sports venues really stick it to the fans with regard to memorabilia and food.
Here''s an idea: The media are always talking about how fat Americans are; perhaps if the fans got off their couches and went out and played a game or two instead of watching pros play sports on TV everyone would be thinner? Just a thought...

I very much enjoyed your segment on the Super Bowl this evening. Your pre-game prediction was outstanding. I was surprised you didn''t make more of your ability to prognosticate the outcome so accurately. However, I must also comment on your Boston / New England observation.
As a proud resident of New Jersey, I wish the Giants (I''m a fan that goes back to the days at Yankee Stadium) had the decency to change their name to the New Jersey Giants, just as the Patriots changed their name to something more geographically accurate. They no longer play in Boston / New York, so rightly they changed their name to New England / the Giants should have given up the York and changed it to Jersey.

Your segment of 60 Minutes is one part I never miss. I''m a lifetime NE Patriots fan who, although I didn''t like the outcome of the Superbowl last week, congratulates the Giants on their win over the Patriots.
Using your logic that they should be called the Boston Patriots, your team should be called the East Rutherford[NJ] Giants (that really rolls of the tongue). The Patriots play in, and represent New England. The Giants haven''t played in New York in 30 years!!

I''ve been a loyal Pat''s fan since 1986 whether Boston or New England. I lived in NY during the great NY Giant days of YA Tittle and Sam Huff while they played in Yankee Stadium. I can''t wait to see your New Jersey Giants celebrate through the streets of Hoboken carrying the Vince Lombardi trophy.
