But in Wednesday's edition of The Early Show's continuing "Recession-Proofing Your Life" series, it was pointed out that eating less meat is also better for your pocketbook!
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, a six-ounce serving of beef costs $1.56, but a serving of veggies costs only 12-cents.
If your family of four were to have meatless meals just twice a week, you'd save almost $600 a year on your grocery bill!
You'll typically pay less for veggies if you buy them fresh, as opposed to canned or frozen.
The five least expensive veggies are potatoes, cabbage, carrots, onions and sweet potatoes.
You'll spend the most on green peas and asparagus.
