Get Used To It - Giants Become New Standard For Underdog Politicians

By John Bresnahan

(The Politico)  Hopefully, this doesn't become a trend - Democratic challenger Dennis Shulman, inspired by the New York Giants' huge, stunning, miraculous upset of the New England Patriots in Sunday's Super Bowl, invoked the Giants' upset image on Monday morning in releasing a statement noting that he had outraised incumbent GOP Rep. Scott Garrett (N.J.) in the 4th quarter of 2007. Shulman raised $143,000 to Garrett's $121,00, although Garrett still has a sizable lead in cash on hand over Shulman, $352,000 to $175,000.

"My campaign to bring sensible leadership to the district and to Congress is continuing to pick up momentum, driven by the shared conviction that we can and must do better," said Shulman in a press release. "Like the Giants, we will prove the naysayers wrong and bring real change to Washington."

So Shulman wins the first of The Crypt's "Lamest Press Release Based on Big Sporting Event" award. Hopefully, he is also the last.

Go Blue!
