Plea Deal For Pa. Man Accused Of Giving Nyquil To Daughter So He Could Put Her To Bed

Warning signs, state-by-state child services information and a history of child welfare reforms.

(AP)  A man accused of drugging his 9-year-old daughter with cold medicine so he could meet his mistress has pleaded guilty to endangerment for leaving the girl and her younger sister alone at night.

In court, Richard Bowen did not admit to giving one girl Nyquil so she would sleep, but prosecutors said he admitted it during phone calls from jail.

Police said Bowen was responsible for his 8- and 9-year-old daughters while his wife worked overnight. On several occasions between February and May, he allegedly gave the cold medicine to the 9-year-old, then put both girls to bed before leaving to visit his mistress.

Prosecutor Michelle Olshefski said Bowen admitted to the allegations in phone calls from jail to his family, friends and his girlfriend.

The calls influenced Bowen's decision to plead guilty, defense attorney Paul Walker said.

He pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of endangering the welfare of children, which carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison. As part of the deal, prosecutors dropped corruption of minors, reckless endangerment and other charges.

Bowen, 31, of Olyphant, remains in jail. A sentencing date has not been set.

Oh, btw, a story that lasted about 2 seconds was on CBS news online about two separate non-profits determining the Bush administration lied to the U.S. citizenry 935 times. But never mind about that, we''ll keep reading the story about the cat in the suitcase for the next 2.5 days. The right wing christian right would certainly prefer that unless it''s an ugly story about the "liberals".

Isn''t NyQuil a legal, over the counter cold remedy? Not knowing how much of the stuff he gave the kids, what''s the problem with giving it, in principal? It''s legal and millions of people use the stuff every day. And if the kids got a good night''s sleep, what''s the harm?

Bad guy, now, back to the business of the nation. It was on the CBS news online for 2 seconds that two non-profits determined the Bush administration lied to the american people 935 times after 9/11.

The cat in the suitcase story will be online for another two days.

Let us distract ourselves and displace our rage as a nation on one low functioning anti-social and ignore the big high functioning anti-socials that hide behind that curtain raping the people of this nation of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Doesn''t that make sense after all if the american people are that stupid? I mean, evolution has it''s method of destroying the ignorant from living species.

Have you not be reading on the harm cold medications can do to children? Mostly infants, but giving any kind of medications to children that they don''t need, especially one that puts them to sleep, is dangerous!

Not that it''s any of my business but the stupidity of doping your children so you can go out and see your mistress...is just borderline insanity!

A lot of parents drug their children. I''ve done it my co workers have done my freinds have done it. The prosecutor in this case probably has done it. The judge has probably done it. Bush probably did and Pelosi too. But still he should have had the mistress drive over. they could have done it up in the car and still kept an eye on the house.

While I find this story repulsive, and the man low on character and responsibility, I question whether giving his children an OTC medication can be considered abusive or illegal. It doesn''t make it good, but is it illegal to give children an over-the-counter medication? And at whose discretion should the medication be dispensed? Leaving the children unattended and alone is obviously negligent, at best.

Surely will appease that request. A story posted on CBS news online for 2 seconds about two non-profits that determined the Bush administration lied to the public 935 times since 9/11. Let''s not let the "liberal" media distract and digress with stories posted for days about one low functioning sociopath who doped his kids so he could get nookie, or sociopaths who chopped off the hand of 94 year old man. It''s a mean, mean world out there. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Oh, yeah, the "liberal" ha, media is quickly scooting over the story about the 935 times the Bush administration lied to the public. The "liberal" oh h*&%@, we know it''s the right wing media that ignores the illusive man behind the curtain. The high functioning sociopath that robs the pension plan, that bankrupts the company and walks with millions of dollars in severance. The illusive who rob the nations treasury and profits from war.

To digress and distract. How about that kitty that took a plane trip in the suitcase...it''s just been returned to its owner. Thanks for the valuable info "liberal" media.---back to the real media, later.

"what''s the problem" with giving children otc medications? seriously? do you not read the news? otc medications for adults are not formulated for children, and as anyone who watches the news or reads just the headlines could tell you, even cold medications made for children are not neccessarily safe for very young children. it stands to reason that adult medication is not safe for children...especially if given with the intent of making the child sleep. who knows what sort of dosage he was giving those kids?

hahaha! PONED! But I will say, there nothing better to feed the minds and heartstrings of us libs like a good hand cutting off story! Really! It''s a nice diversion to the kids being blown up and the women raped in other countries (.. wait that happens here to some degree..?) But of course that pales in comparison to the elite few with Power and Money.

Ooooo, a ***-n-drugs story! This should be just titillating enough to distract people from real news.

CBS:
Why no news of the Center for Public Integrity report exhaustively documenting 935 falsehoods Bush and his cronies told in the lead-up to and surrounding the start of Iraq war? Wa Post and ABC are covering it. Apparently you ran it yesterday but quickly took it down? What''s up with that?

A lot of people are talking about holding Bush/Cheney accountable for treasonous behavior. I agree.
Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL) has gathered around 225K signatures from an online petition asking for congressional hearings into Cheney''s behavior as possible grounds for impeachment. He only needed 50K signatures, but got almost 5X as many as needed. Still, Rep. JOHN CONYERS (D-MI) is chair of the House Judiciary Committee and is holding things up.

Bush/Cheney RESCUED America from terrorists???

Where were you on 9/11? Out of town or something? IT HAPPENED ON THEIR WATCH! And it happened despite being told repeatedly by the outgoing intelligence people from the previous administration that BinLaden and his group were the number one threat to national security. What was the title of the national security brief Condie Rice brought before the 9/11 commission entitled? BinLaden Determined to Strike Inside US? All the predictions were in there.
But from day one in the Oval Office Bush/Cheney and the neocons were obsessed with Iraq, which had nothing to do with it.
Even after 9/11 Bush/Cheney FAILED to capture or kill BinLaden or anyone high up in al-Qaeda because they OUTSOURCED military offensive at the Tora Bora caves to local Afghans and pulled US troops out fight in their new fabricated war in Iraq.
So today nearly 80% of the world''''s opium comes from Afghanistan, BinLaden and the Taliban are coming back (Bush just had to send 3000 Marines back into Afghanistan) and Iraq just sucks us dry for money.

Go hide your GOP head in the sand again. Maybe it''''ll just go away.

Hopefully this Dad, if you really want to call him that, will loose his parental rights. Getting some action was more important to him that caring for his children. Check Nyquil on its dosing instructions. It states not to give to anyone under the age of 12 without consulting a Doctor.

This entire story makes me ill. I feel so badly for all children who have "parents" like this. I was so lucky in many ways my mother had to take care of all of us and take care of my father totally because my dad had a stroke and was competely paralized and work a full time job. NEVER did she do anything to us so she could live a life that she could have had if she didn''t work so hard. She was always GOOD to us no matter what.

This father has been trusted by the poor mother to care for their two children while she goes to work at night. The earnings of the father(if he has any), is obviosly not enough for the family, so she goes to work, while the no-good husband durgs his children then go gallivanting with his mistress. Such a horrible situation for the family. Shameless scum of the earth. Let him rot in jail.
