The northern tier of states has been buried with snow and cold weather, and many other regions are enduring frigid conditions. Bianca Solorzano reports on the latest national forecast.

(CBS/AP)  Temperatures dropped to breathtaking levels, well below zero, in extreme northern sections of Maine early Monday.

Thermometers registered 34 degrees Fahrenheit below zero at Van Buren, 27 below at Presque Isle and 26 below at Allagash, the National Weather Service reported.

In the northern Rockies, Butte, Mont., registered 32 below at 8 a.m. - with a wind chill of minus 47, the weather service said.

Another of the nation's usual cold spots, International Falls, Minn., managed only 16.1 below zero, but even after the sun came up its temperature of 14 below combined with 6 mph wind for a wind chill of 29 below zero, according to a weather service Web site.

Even the South is being hit, reports CBS News correspondent Bianca Solorzano. Temperatures dropped 17 degrees in Atlanta, and 3 inches of snow fell in southwestern Mississippi.

As the cold air blew across Lake Ontario, it picked up enough moisture to produce 3 feet of lake-effect snow Sunday in New York's Oswego County. The roof of a public works garage holding snow removal equipment collapsed early Monday in Fulton, N.Y., under the weight of 37 inches of snow, and the town declared a state of emergency. The region at the east of Lake Ontario often gets heavy lake-effect snow.

"We're digging out," said state police Sgt. Edwin Croucher in Fulton. He reported multiple accidents caused by the storm but no serious injuries.

There''''s nothing remarkable about this cold spell. It''''s very typical for this time of year.

But Algore promised us that because of man-made Global Warming we wouldn''''t have winters anymore...
So Algore, what gives?
Maybe you need to turn up the temp on your heated outdoor pool?

It is breath taking how you people state things. You either do not research things or lack the basic intelligence to understand them. The Artic still gets cold in the winter, just not as cold as in years past. We''ve already been told by the scientist that the cap is melting much more in summer than in the past AND is not freezing like in the past. When the Jet Stream dips south as it has in this case of course we''re going to experience cold.... for now. But whats the use? You and your simple minded friends will believe what you want regardless won''t you?

So, why aren''''t we doing everything we possibly can to promote and accelerate global warming until the two numbers are comparable?

That''''s when our planet will have its ideal optimum climate.

LOL You Neocon''s aren''t very bright now are you?? LMAO IF it wasn''t for Global Warning this radical shifts in weather would not be happening. Those Jet Streams that ONCE stayed north... the Jet Streams that ONCE moved more west to east now are dipping far south... but hey if it helps you keep your head in the sand why not huh? ROFLMAO

Which of the following two extreme weather conditions causes more deaths?

(A) a cold winter
(B) a hot summer

The answer is (A) by a huge margin.

So, why aren''t we doing everything we possibly can to promote and accelerate global warming until the two numbers are comparable?

That''s when our planet will have its ideal optimum climate.

When did Al say "No winters" ??

No Global Warming ? Then why is the Bush Administration trying to censor James Hansen of NASA on the subject ??

In 1981 Jamses Hansen (Iowan and U of I graduate) and a team of scientists at Goddard had reached the conclusion that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would lead to global warming sooner than previously predicted. While other climatologists had already predicted that a trend would be apparent by 2020, Hansen predicted, in a paper published in Science, that the change was already occurring and that there would record high temperatures as early as 1990. He also predicted that it would be difficult to convince politicians and the public to react.

Record-breaking low temperatures are the result of, of course, man-made "Global Warming".

Not.

They''re not record breaking low temperatures, you dimwit. Global warming is happening regardless of how cold it can get in the winter, you dimwit.

Summer is only 5 months away
Maybe where you are noaanhc; but here in California it will be here in less than 30 days.

We like global warming over here; and I suspect there''s more people on earth who do, than those who don''t.

Just to put things in perspective:
Feb. 12, 1899 - Tallahassee FL reached -2. It was in the Feb 9-12 timeframe that sub 0 temperatures were felt from coast to coast and as far south as Austin, TX. This cold blast still stands as the most extensive U.S. cold wave since the establishment of the Signal Corps in 1860
On Feb. 9, 1934 New York City sank to it''s all time modern low of -15. (supposedly it hit -16 in 1835 but no one really knows). On that same day, Old Forge 200 miles north registered NY''s lowest of record, -52.
The West Coast has not been spared. Coos Bay, OR dropped to 0 on 12/19 1990. That December cold snap cost the California citrus industry over 800 Million dollars in lost crops and trees according to the California Citrus Research Board.
As recently as 1996, during the recent global warm-up, the little town of Embarrass, Minnesota struck an unofficial but probably accurate reading of -64 the first week in Feburary - I''d be embarrassed, too!
Nothing I have said invalidates this cold snap but there have been several others as bad or worse...
