O.J.: The Next Britney?

Some Experts See Striking Similarities: Both Seem To Feel Above the Law

(CBS)  .J. Simpson is back behind bars. With his armed robbery trial set to begin in April, Simpson was arrested in Florida on Friday, flown to Las Vegas and jailed, accused of violating his $125,000 bail in his Vegas robbery and kidnapping case, because of a voicemail he allegedly left for his bail bondsman, asking the bondsman to pass a message along to Simpson's co-defendant. A Simpson lawyer, Yale Galanter, denies Simpson tried to contact a co-defendant.

Some observers, notes CBS News correspondent Bianca Solozano, may say the bondsman ratted Simpson out, but when he was arraigned in September he was warned loud and clear not to contact any other defendants and potential witnesses in the case, either directly or through third-parties.

At least one legal eagle says Simpson's very latest alleged misdeed is typical: "There's the rules," says CBS News legal analyst Mickey Sherman, "there's the laws of the United States of America, and then there's the rules of O.J. He just defies it. It's just amazing."

So why, asks Solorzano, is Simpson, a man who knows legal troubles, pushing his luck? He may be the latest celebrity to know the rules and still break them.

Simpson and Britney Spears are two of the most scrutinized stars, constantly watched. Yet, observes Solorzano, they both seem to call their own shots, no matter what the law says.

"These people," says Sherman, "call on people who fix the problems and, more often than not, they fix it well."

Spears was given specific orders regarding her visitation rights for her two children and she is said to have broken the rules by refusing to return the boys to their father. And that's not the first time, or second, or third.

She has violations, Solorzano points out, ranging from driving with her infant son in her lap to the August hit-and-run while driving without a valid license. She has also missed court-ordered random drug testing.

Now, allegedly ignoring the rules could cost both of them.

"Britney, I think," says Sherman, "probably is looking at the worst situation in the world. She's not facing jail so much, I mean, maybe but, more importantly, she's facing the loss of her children. ... The bottom line is, with O.J. is, is this going to mean that he's going to go to jail? The immediate issue is, does he go to jail between now and the time of his trial?"

Spears was expected to testify Monday about the standoff during which she allegedly refused to turn over her boys. Simpson's next bail hearing is slated for Wednesday. He could face life in prison on his charges of kidnapping, armed robbery and conspiracy.

barbaraf4: I never thought I would be defending Kevin Federline, but during all of this ***, there has never been anything published about him out partying and ignoring/neglecting the kids, and with all the media watching, it would certainly be all over the place if he was misbehaving. His ex has NEVER said one bad thing about his parenting of their two children - that tells me a lot right there. To me, the children are the MOST important thing in all of this mess, and I believe that he is clearly the only PARENT those boys have, so if he does get money from her for taking on all the responsibility which she has so clearly abdicated, then so be it. She makes over 700,000 dollars per month it has been reported, so she clearly can afford it - better than her paying some nannies to take care of them anyway.

"You suggested Britney should grow up, take her meds and be a parent to the boys. She is only an incubator, not a MOTHER, and doesn''''t WANT those two little boys - if she DID, she would make an effort to clean herself up and follow court orders."

I agree 100%. I only suggested that she has motherhood as one of her options. Her final actions are up to her. I don''t see her mothering those boys either. On the other hand, I''m not sure what K-Fed''s intentions are. If he really wants to play dad, then he is doing a good job. If he wants all of Britney''s money, then he is doing a good job of spending it on legal fees. If this were a normal situation, and there wasn''t a fortune paying the attorneys, then there would have been some sort of agreement reached by now. This one could go on until the boys graduate from college (or the 9th grade, as both parents did).

BTW, to RealTalk5950: are you going to do a YouTube video standing up for OJ, like that little pimple did last year for Brit? Let me know if you do, bet it would be pretty funny. LOL!

The first time she blew off a court ordered drug test proved that - her partying is more important to her than the children. I say they should give them to Mr. Federline and terminate her rights completly, or at the very least, with VERY limited/monitored visitation.

Why would any one with even a barely functional brain like Julie Chen, Bianca Solozano and Mickey Sherman (have you read about his own recent troubles and should be the last to be talking about anyone else''s demise!!!!) ever want to compare Britney Spears to OJ Simpson? One a murderer/sociopath/pathological liar and the other having serious health issues and who is publicly crying out for help but won''t get it because her current life story and photographs are making millions for entertainment reporters and their stations.

Britney''''s choices: don''''t take your meds and then go party every night. Of course, you will lose your children (if it really matters to you). Or, grow up and take your meds, and be a parent to your children. You gave birth to them, they are your responsibility.

Of course they don''t matter. The little snot chose to end a marriage after 55 hours. Her entire history is hardly genuine. Everything she''s doing now is out of irresponsibility than real illness. She does not want the kids; that much is certain, and I suspect she''s playing bonkers just so she doesn''t have to pay a cent in support.

Fine, let somebody take them and give them a proper childhood before they become psycho wastrels like her. I am sick of seeing our society continue to go downhill like this.
