Tells 60 Minutes "Beacon" Needs Work, 2008 IPO Highly Unlikely

(CBS)  He dropped out of Harvard in 2004, where he was intending to study psychology. His mom is a psychiatrist, his dad's a dentist. Zuckerberg was a computer whiz early on, writing software in sixth grade. In his second year at Harvard he built a site where students could rate, or berate, the looks of classmates through ID photos he lifted off Harvard's computers.

"You got into deep trouble from this little prank," Stahl remarks.

"Well, Harvard was just not happy that I was using their images," Zuckerberg says.

"Well, they said you hacked," Stahl says. "Did they punish you?"

"Yeah, I was put on some sort of -- I don't know what you call it," Zuckerberg says.

"Probation?" Stahl asks.

"Sure," Zuckerberg says.

Soon thereafter, he and his two roommates created an online version of the Harvard student directory where kids could message each other. They called it "The Facebook" and launched it from their dorm room. Within four months they had expanded to 40 colleges, and over the summer moved to Palo Alto.

But Zuckerberg had done code writing for some upper classmen with a similar idea, and they have filed a law suit. "Three Harvard students are suing you claiming that you stole their idea for Facebook," Stahl remarks.

"Well, I mean we know that we didn't steal any ideas or code so we're just kind of waiting until that comes out in court," Zuckerberg says.

"In the lawsuit they claim that you were duplicitous," Stahl says. "Are you worried about it?"

"No, I don't really spend a whole lot of my time worrying about that," Zuckerberg says. "I mean we have lawyers at the company who deal with that stuff. And, it's not a huge concern."

Despite his young age, Zuckerberg seems to have made one savvy business decision after the next. "About half my time is spent on business operation type stuff," Zuckerberg says.

He expanded access to Facebook from college students to high schoolers, then in 2006 to adults, his fastest growing demographic. Now he's inviting everyone on the site to create new software and pocket the profits themselves. It's a way to keep the next big thing on Facebook. New programs emerge daily, like Facebook Scrabble.

"I actually have a couple games going on now with my grandparents," Zuckerberg says, laughing. "So, they got on Facebook and we started playing Scrabble together."

So Facebook is changing the way we communicate with our friends, and with our grandparents. It's also changing politics. Every major candidate has a page. Zuckerberg says there seem to be more Republicans on the site than Democrats, and among them, Barack Obama - with his young persons following - is hugely popular; Hillary Clinton is hugely unpopular.

"It used to be, first you went on 'Face The Nation' if you were a candidate. Then you went on Letterman. Now it seems the candidates have to be on Facebook. Are you changing the way candidates are running for president?" Stahl asks.

"Well, I think because politicians can communicate with tens of thousands of people at the same time, it's pretty effective for them in campaigning," Zuckerberg explains.

Facebook is growing so quickly now, there's talk of it becoming a giant slayer.

Charlene Li, an analyst at technology consulting company Forrester Research, thinks Facebook is a challenge to Google.

What I buy & when I buy it is my own business. Why should I want to broadcast it to anyone/everyone on Facebook or anywhere else, for that matter. It''s not like I''m getting some kind of discount to do so. I mean, what''s the incentive for me to do so? If a company wants me to broadcast that I purchased one of their products, then offer me a discount on the product. Otherwise, stick to your tradional ads, (De)Face(d)book. My privacy doesn''t come cheap, and certainly not free.

The funniest part was when a little stuck-up, spoiled, stupid, arrogant and "amazing" college student I know graduated, and suddenly wasn''t so welcome on "amazing" facebook with her spoiled little "amazing" friends. Now she is working for the corporations, like a a dog, at their beck and call, a meaningless part of a hostile, meaningless system, not so "amazing" is it, white trash.

Advertising Mark Zuckerberg as looking "barely out of high school" makes 60 Minutes seem antiquated and ignorant. I understand that those of us in our mid-twenties may appear to be merely high school whippersnappers to the retirement-age set, but we are adults and contributing members of society. Does Mr. Zuckerbery understand how destructive facebook has been in the high schools? Parents and districts are blocking this site. Do you know how kids are using facebook under the age of 18? Contact your local school district. The 23-year-old entrepreneur says, "It might take some work for us to get this exactly right. This is something we think is going to be a really good thing." Why is the fact that he is only 23 such a BIG DEAL? I am personally offend at the implication that a 23 year old cannot have the mental capacity to run a business. I am only two years older than him and I have a masters degree as well as half way through getting my PhD. I also have held down professional job for the last seven years as well as started a family. This commentary was ageist. Just because you are young or old does not mean that can not benefit from being in the right place at the right time or having a brilliant idea.

I''ve been on Facebook for about 6 months, and on MySpace for about a year. Facebook has given me far more secure service than MySpace, and I find new reasons to like it every day.
It sounds to me like folks need to be more cautious about the things they choose to post online, but then again, that''s anywhere online, not just Facebook.

My brother made an interesting comment after watching this ... a member of the "old guard" interviewing a member of the "new guard." His responese were typical of Executives (I''ve worked as a right hand for one) - seems like he''s had some coaching, or at least good influences. And, as implied, there is a difference between experience which time and age brings, and youth ... in which case Mr. Zuckerburg has made a few inept decisions. Everybody grows with time (well, at least most people do). What should be noted in contrast and comparison is that while he still may be able to grow and learn, it is the "old guard" and time-tried (aged) crowd which changes slower; at least he was tactful enough NOT to say that outright in the interview (would prove to insult executives who are older than him, and people who know this fact, but refuse to acknowledge it). Whereas, he did make a more indirect note to the fact that a company with young leadership is more agile.

I was pretty surprised to see 60 Minutes do an entire segment on Facebook without even mentioning its greatest competition: Myspace, which predated Facebook and presumably inspired it. I''m reslly stunned that a great show like 60 Minutes would be so sloppy.

I see that Merriam-Webster online defines an alumnus as a person who has attended or has graduated from a particular school, college, or university. So according to Merriam-Webster, Zuckerberg is an alum of Harvard University, despite his not having graduated.
