The Woman Who Elicited Clinton's Emotion

She Was Moved By Barack Obama, But She Moved Hillary Clinton

  • Play CBS Video Video Clinton Fights Back Tears

"CBS News RAW": Hillary Clinton gives an emotional response at a campaign stop in Portsmouth, N.H., when a woman asks her how she stays "upbeat" on the trail.

  • Video Clinton Shows Softer Side

A simple question from a 64-year-old freelance photographer elicited a very personal response from Hillary Clinton. Jim Axelrod reports.

Hillary Clinton fights back tears as she speaks at a Portsmouth, N.H., campaign event, Jan. 7, 2008.  (CBS)

(CBS)  It's been a busy couple of days for Marianne Pernold Young, as far as presidential candidates go. She saw Barack Obama speak on Saturday.

"But you know, he moved me to tears," Young, a freelance photographer, told CBS News chief White House correspondent Jim Axelrod.

Today was her turn to move a candidate to tears - when a question about how the candidate keeps it all together caused Hillary Clinton to show a side of her you never see.

"It shows she's a human being," Young said.

Undecided when she woke up, Young's now leaning strongly toward Clinton.

"She showed emotion," Young said. "She was there for me. She is there for all of us."

One of Clinton's rivals didn't see if that way at all - implying she was soft.

"Presidential campaigns are tough business, but being president of the United States is also a very tough business," said John Edwards.

Others will question if it was for real. Not Young.

Axelrod said to her: "People all over this country are watching this moment, and a fair number of them will say she was doing it for the camera."

"I don't think so at all," Young said. "Could you do that? Could you be moved to ... could you cry like that?"

So after thousands of questions asked by the most aggressive reporters in the last 16 years, and never showing a hint of emotion, it's a 64-year-old freelance photographer who elicits such an emotional response from Hillary Clinton.

I support John Edwards for president. But I was really moved by Hillary Clinton''s response today. Up until now, I haven''t given her much credit for being her own person. Now I think I can support her wholeheartedly if she becomes the Democratic Candidate.

All of our candidates are human. It''s a little sad in itself to think that we needed Hillary to display it, we knew it all along about Edwards and Obama. Democrats need to nominate someone who moves others emotionally not someone who needs to prove they have emotions to begin with. Obama has that quality, let''s not lose the chance.

After years of extraordinary comportment as First Lady, particularly during the Monica Lewinsky scandal, it''s ironic that Hillary Clinton is now characterized as emotionally unfit because, for a few brief moments, she had watery eyes. When President Bush was much more emotional and on the verge of tears in a not too long ago televised address, it was characterized as understandable. When John McCain loses his temper, it''s characterized as a leadership quality. When John Edwards gets downright mean in his comments, it''s not petty, it''s just part of what''s expected in the election game.

No so with Mrs. Clinton. Shame on her for being so articulate. Same on her for being so well educated. Shame on her for being so successful in her law career. Shame on her for demonstrating such poise in the face of humiliating conduct on the part of her husband during his presidency. Shame on her for being a capable U. S. Senator. Shame on her for obtaining health care on behalf of children and the national guard. Shame on her for being so informed on practically every significant issue facing the United States. Shame on her still caring enough to fight in the face of such bigotry and hatred.

I knew she would melt at some point. She is an honorable American and against any other candidate but Obama she would have prevailed. I`m sure the irony is overwhelming.Bill Clinton was considered the first "black" president by many. Now her hopes and aspirations are vanishing at the hands of a candidate from a minority group they embraced. I have supported Baack Obama since he announced his candidacy and I am ecstatic that he is kicking some serious ***. We must remember that us Democrats have a fine field of qualified candidates and, in the end , we are in it together. I hope that Barack will include Hillary and Bill in his cabinet.

The behavior of the American Press is shameful and the hatred of the American people towards Clinton is unexplainable and shameful as well, really...that is all I have to say about this ridiculous coverage. If I were American I''d be in New Hampshire right now, supporting Mrs. Clinton. As an outsider I can see there is something very wrong going on here. What has happened to the thinking Americans? America should be responsible, the world is affected by your actions, unfortunately!
Don''t give up Mrs. Clinton, New Hampshire is not make or brake...no matter what the papers and tv shows say.

I believe in and support Hillary Clinton today as I have always done. I truly believe Hillary is and will be able to bring order to this country after eight long years of chaos. She is so very bright, maybe, in my opinion, the brightest of all those running today. She is capable of making the tough decisions when needed, while being able listen to others when it is advisable. I like and am also charmed by Obama, he is very charismatic, however I believe he lacks some of the stuff needed that you only get through hard work and experience. So, I too am moved by her genuine response today, her sincere desire to make a better America for all of us shines thru.

This was a Hitlerian moment - fake crying for the cameras. A woman who as mentioned has been in the public eye for 20 years, attacked attacking, full of hate for everyone, fighting, lying, being called names, calling other people names, never once, NOT ONCE, has she ever cried in public. Until the PHONIEST MOMENT IN ELECTION HISTORY. This reveals her as the purest evil, a true sociopath. America doesn''t deserve this, we are stupid but we are nto so evil as to deserve hillary Clinton and her fake tears.

It is no wonder cbs evening news with katie couric is a complete flop, lacking an audience and last in the rating polls and I mean way low in the polls, like rock bottom.
It is so obvious to the average citizen the liberal bias and unfair support they give to Chillary Clinton. They air her pathetic phony speech today and never ask her a single question no less a meaningful or tough question (they wouldn''t dream of it). But the other candidates (mainly GOP candidates) get negative air time of only tough questions in a clear effort to make them look bad. viewers are not as dumb as you think they are CBS! This is one clear reason why your numbers are soo low!

Hello People! You have a real chance to get the best man in office with a perfect record in congress-- none of them come close to Dr. Ron Paul. I have compared them. I didn''''t know who was who and didnt trust the media machine. Look up ronpaul2008.com and his issues and record, and you will see for yourself. Don''''t be fooled by the imitators, there is only one guy that can really make a difference for the people. Also Dr. Ron Paul is on TONIGHT WITH JAY LENO - Tonight!!!

Hillary withstands daily personal attacks from the media and her opponents, a constant barrage of hard-hitting questions about her record and her visions for the future of our country, she''s under the microscope 24/7.

The question that drove her to tears today was: "How did you get out the door every day? I mean, as a woman, I know how hard it is to get out of the house and get ready. Who does your hair?"

REALLY? TEARS?!! "How do you get ready?" and "Who does your hair?"

She''s either faking or unstable. Either way, it''s disturbing!

Hillary, don''t let that "good ol'' boy network" get to you at this late stage, not after all these years! Stay true....I know you will stay strong. You have more balls than any of your fellow candidates...and I have just decided that I will support you. I believe this country needs someone like you right now, but I''m not sure this country deserves someone like you....thank you for wanting to go through hell for us during one of the lowest and most trying periods in our country''s history.

Shameful media. Until recently I had never thought that the media could make or break a candidate. This coronation of Obama way before much has surfaced in regards to his proposed policies is absurd.. The American people do not know anything about this man other then he is a great speaker and has good energy but in regards to Action we know nothing and he has already been set on the throne via the media. I wish the media would allow the democratic party to choose it''s own candidate without over kill coverage on Obama as he has already won the general election. We just are about to get rid of the chance we took on change viaBUSH so do not jump into the craziness of so called change without proof of experience. Go Hillary!

She knows now she is losing and is starting to panic, that''''s why she is crying. As she said, "this is not about politics, this is personal." Yea, like her narcissistic ego is getting crushed! Now we have Bill trying to make it a sexism issue "I can''''t make her younger, taller and male" (I kinda thought he couldn''''t make her any which way, which is why he chases all the other women). Then "someone" plants two men in the audience to yell sexist comments--all for her to save face and go down as a victim of sexism rather than of her own failings.

"Presidential campaigns are tough business, but being president of the United States is also a very tough business," said John Edwards"

Yeah, John, and you''ll lead with the same cold blooded emotions you had when you ripped several millions off of those injured children in those lawsuits you won. You took 30% of their awards in those lawsuits, plus expenses! That means they got about 60%, 50% of which will be taxed. That leaves them with 30% to take care of them after their guts were ripped out. Now, you will take your 30% invest it all in tax shelters, hedge funds and the like...won''t pay the government you love so much a dime. Then you''ll go off and rip off the next unfortunate suffering fool. And then you''ll stand there with your arm around the kid, and tell the world how much you love them.

The sad thing is, had they not had a 99% winable case you have told them to drop dead! You love them that much!

I normally don''t comment about politics even though I I pay close attention to them. I usually vote republican and more then likely will this year also. Hillary wasn''t faking this (IMO) and now I like her better then I did yesterday.

I was talking to a 25 year old woman today about politics and who she plans on voting for. She was all for Obama...when asked why, she said because he is the one that is going to win. I asked her what his view points are...answer "I don''t know". I asked her what experience he had and would he be able to handle a major crisis...her response was "you don''t need experience to be a president...a five year old could do it cause it doesn''t matter anyway." (How sad...and how scary.)

Someone asks if Clinton could fake this "emotional moment"; she''s behind, unlikeable and just on the brink of history as a loser. I think I could muster tears for all that if someone asks me if I liked my best ever XMAS present if I let my mind focus or(compartmentalize)on the sad events taking place right now in her calculating mind. She and her husband are experts at this and how odd this show of tears has occured twice both when she''s been advised to show a softer side of herself which I don''t believe even exists. GO OBAMA!!!!!!!!

Wow. First, Obama is a Christian. And it doesn''t matter if he was a Muslim, he''d be equally qualified to lead the country.

Hillary was faking. That was too canned, too forced for her to really be like that.

And you can''t say Obama''s a bad candidate for president because people who vote for him don''t know his issues. I know how everyone stands on everything, and I choose to support Obama.

OK, granted many young people are riding the "rock star" thing with Obama. However, there are those of us who do know where he stands on all the issues and are enthusiastic about him.

Many are attempting to portray Obama as a flash in the pan, a rock star or a candidate who lacks substance. Because he is popular with the voters, does not have to mean that he has no substance. The man has an extensive personal resume, has exhibited superior wisdom and judgment in the past and is notorious for his intellect. Bill Bradley, another politician who perhaps lacked the personal appeal of Obama but had tremendous intellectual gifts just endorsed Obama. Many other heavy hitters have endorsed Obama. Are they all wrong? Do they all believe Obama is a good flashy candidate and for that reason merits their support? I don''t think so.

There isn''t a chance in the world or in this country, fo rthat matter, that any of the Democrats running for the next President, will win. Between their lack of experiance, their lack of leadership, their lack of achievements, their lack of ability, their lack of credibility, it is obvious that a Republican will win, but it won''t be Ron Paul.LOL!

What a drama? This is clean strategy. There are no emotions behind what Hillary Clinton said. Much as she wants to try anything that works in this last minute to get her votes, this won''t work. People are smart enough to know who is genuine and who can really bring change... All this won''t work...Good attempt ...better luck next time....Vote OBAMA ...The real change agent

Billary the night before her tears:

HC: This is my election. What is happenening here?
Slick Willie: Let''s think to when you were polls were highest. Aha, when you were a victim after the whole [cough] Monica incident. I GOT IT! Let''s show some tears the day before the NH vote. You can''t do the lip biting thing. That''s my schtick.
HC: Well it''s not like I''m not close to tears anyway. The democratic nomination was mine, mine, mine (she says in her best 2 year old voice) and I am getting my a** served to me on a silver platter.

At the diner questioner asks: You look great, who does your hair?
Billary falls into a crumpled mass filled with statemtents about "I" and "me." "This is peresonal" "I see so many opportunities for me . . "

(Contrast Obama''s interview that same morning with Diane Sawyer where he explained that the election was not about him.)

ME: Tired of Slick Willie and the wife who claims 35 years of experience; the majority of which are her HUSBAND''s work.

My 2008 Goal: Find a man with outstanding achievements so that I can add his accomplishments to my resume.

The Clintons don''t belong back in the White House. Are we American Idiots?

Scandal and right wing Government don''t belong in the highest position of honor in America.

The fact that she is even running is a joke to us.

The best part was after the tears as Hilary claims that she was just so touched that someone cared about how she felt. Hil went on to say that she is so other focused that it took her by surprise.

Hillary Clinton is the best candidate to run this country. She did more then all the first ladys combind, plus her husband would be the best First man because he was a President who would or could do any better. Everyone forgets that Bill Clinton did , he had our country unemployment at it''s lowest, wages went up and we didn''t own billions it was going to $0 .

If americans do not wake up and see that Obama is blowing a smoke screen. Then it will be to late.just like Bush did because Obama just wants a pay check.

If Obama is elected the poor and middleclass will not go any where just like Bush did. Remember how Bush said the same thing we needed change but all Bush cared about was the rich get richer and poor get poor. Obama has not told anyone what he will do on his first day or any other day in office. Obama says we need change but what is he going to change?????

WHAT IS OBAMA GOING TO CHANGE AMERICA???
THAT IS THE MILLIOM DOLLAR QUESTION!!!!!!
OBAMA HAS NEVER SAID WHAT AREAS IS HE GOING TO CHANGE.

HILLARY CLINTON HAS TOLD US WHAT SHE WILL DO EVEN ON HER FIRST DAY. LET US VOTE FOR THE RIGHT CANDIDATE THIS TIME AND NOT LET OUR COUNTRY BE SOLD OUT.

VOTE FOR HILLARY CLINTON SHES THE RIGHT CANDIDATE, CHOICE AND WILL BE THE ONE TO REALLY CHANGE AMERICA.
THANK YOU
GOD BLESS AMERICA

Base decisions on facts and the fact is that the Clintons didn''t give us Universal health care when the Democrats had the House and Senate controll. Why do you think anything has changed now? Who has taken more money from special interests than the any other Democrat or Republican? Hillary Clinton!! PLease vote for anyone of the democrats except her!!!

They really mean: "The Woman Clinton used for her rehearsed and planned phony--human moment" We ain''t buying it--too little too late--the time to cry was not when she was campaigning---there has been a lot of devastation, death and destruction in the world long before this moment--more worthy of her tears.

She should have cried after she realized she had been duped to support a war based on lies and it was killing people who had done nothing to us.

"I don''t think so at all," Young said. "Could you do that? Could you be moved to ... could you cry like that?"

We all know people who can start crying at the drop of a hat. I have a sister--and for entertainment, we used to ask her to start crying--Niagra Falls--tears and for a few bucks, she could throw in sobs, shoulder shaking, lip trembles and deep sighs--all very convincing.

Vote based upon the candidates records and where they stand on issues!!!

Don''t pay any attention to TV ads, interviews, and now campaign speeches. This is all political rhetoric designed to move the swing voters to their favor. Talk is cheap! Come on... we know this from Bush!!!

Think people. Don''t vote from your gut!! Vote from your head!!!
