- Garner Almost Loses Diamond Ring
But Linda Vancel recently got a sweet surprise: A relative of the woman who bought the fudge found the ring when he bit into a piece of the candy.
"It's a very sentimental ring," Vancel said of the white gold ring her mother, who died 15 years ago, wore for 50 years before passing it on.
Linda Rhoades bought the fudge during a bake sale in West Lafayette. She took some of it to her sister-in-law's father, Charles "Red" Matson, in hopes of cheering him up after recent health problems.
When Matson snacked on a piece of the fudge, he bit into something hard - the ring.
Rhoades said Matson called her and said, "Well, Linda, it's got chocolate all over it, but it doesn't look adjustable. It's got a stone that's really shiny."
Vancel said she had scoured her home, even dumping the trash can on the kitchen floor to sort through the rubbish for the ring. Finally she thought to track down Rhoades and sent her a long-shot e-mail, which Rhoades returned as soon as she got back from vacation.
"It renews your faith in people," Vancel said. "Sometimes there's so much negative in the world, to hear a story like this is reassuring."

- The worst part is where you mentally go through everywhere you have been and all the people or places where it was STOLEN from you. Sometimes I have even gone to the places looking for what was lost. Then you find it at home in a suit coat or in the seat of your car.

- Well, there''''s no report of the American soldiers killed in Iraq yesterday, but some lady found her diamond ring. America has its priorities in order. Bright shiny objects are important ! Crows agree with you !

You are living proof, along with mvc57, that Democrats are generally unhappy. If it''s not bad news or some conspiracy you don''t want to hear about it. - Reply to this comment

I hope you all have an especially pleasant 2008, that you are blessed with health and happiness, and that something like this happens to you and see how you feel.

- Last I hear ( and would hope to see in more of our fellow man)honesty was a priority. The news is so full of such awful tales of man agaianst man, that is nice to hear something good for a change.

- I found a gold ring with 1 large diamond surrounded with smaller ones under the seats after a show. I thought it was too small for a grown-up, and a kid dropped it. I picked it up, and the gold was much heavier than a toy should be. I looked again and decided it was real. I called the ticket-seller away from her desk and she said a family is anxious to find it. They wanted me to sit with them for a meal, but I was out with my own family and declined.
Probably a couple of thousand, I guess. - Reply to this comment

- I am glad she got her ring back. I would say remove yer rings and put them where yer know where them are before ye do yer mix/back/cook etc. BETTER TO DO THAT THAN LOSE THEM.

- You know mcv57, you might learn something about compassion from seeing what responses you created here. Get a life and stay off line if you can''t say something positive. Nobody wants to hear your ***, get it?

- Here, here rothink ... I concur ...
I have seen mcv57''s posts and it seems that if they cant tie it to Bush .. or the conservative right ... they cant fathom a positive human interest story ... I beleive that if the reporter researched a little more this was probably a church bake sale ...... I would imagine this fact would cause mcv57 to screw himself into the ceiling .
We should all be greatful that honesty and compassion still exist in some folks ... and CBS can learn a bit more about positive stories ....
Happy New Year !!! - Reply to this comment
- Why is that mcv57? Is it because you can''t find a way to tie it into politics? Is it because it is a story that shows the goodness of someone? Sorry, but I wish more stories were like this. My daughter found a diamond engagement ring that belonged to an elderly woman who recently lost her husband of 50 years. When it was returned to the woman, she contacted my daughter and wanted to give her a reward. My daughter said her reward was the happiness it brought her. I am proud of my daughter. What are you proud of?

- It''s time CBS news turnover, or perhaps the CBS news producer should consider immediate retirement. This article is a waste of time and consideration to readers.
