Kylie Minogue Honored By Queen Elizabeth

Australian pop diva Kylie Minogue has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, in Queen Elizabeth II's New Year's Honors list.

Minogue got her showbiz break as tomboy mechanic Charlene in the Australian soap opera "Neighbors." In 1987, she had her first No. 1 single with "I Should be so Lucky."

She took a break in her career after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005.

"I feel deeply touched to be acknowledged by the U.K., my adopted home, in this way," Minogue said in Australia.

"This last year I have felt so much love and support from everyone as I took greater steps back into the public domain, and it is with absolute gratitude and joy that I say farewell to 2007 and look forward to what the New Year will bring."

I"ve met some Aussies at different times. Fun loving people. In a far eastern honky tonk one of them drank my 3/4 full beer and ate a live *** roach. What a man! He apologized about the beer. Didn''t offer to buy me another one though. In the US an Aussie woman I knew broke into tears over some stray kittens. She was inconsolable until I brought them to a friend''s horse barn. Another was a man who had won a lottery in Australia. He was a good observer of human nature. He thought Australia was a better place to live than the US. They were all great people with a good outlook on life.

"An Officer of the Order of the British Empire".

The British Empire.

The Queen.

A bunch of stuff many Americans hold in low regard.

Good for her.

But I think it kind of funny the way that the Order of the British Empire honor system works. Paul McCartney is an MBE (Member of the British Empire), which is a lower rank than an OBE, which is what Kylie got. But subsequent to becoming an MBE in the 60''s, McCartney was knighted in the late 90''s, becoming a Knight Bachelor so he''s referred to as Sir Paul McCartney, MBE. However, Elton John outranks them both as being a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) and subsequently as a Knight Bachelor so he''s referred to as Sir Elton John, CBE.

She''s okay...I don''t know about being worthy of an English title..but then it''s the English. They get so blubbery about this time of year..what with Diana being gone and all. I guess anything to keep the photogs off the family.
