(CBS/AP)  Benazir Bhutto died from a skull fracture suffered when her head slammed against her car during a suicide attack - not from bullet wounds, the government said Friday.

Authorities on Thursday said Bhutto died from bullet wounds fired by a young man who then blew himself up, killing 20 other people. A surgeon who treated her said Friday she died from the impact of shrapnel on her skull.

But later Friday, Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema said all three shots missed her as she greeted supporters through the sunroof of her vehicle, which was bulletproof and bombproof.

He also denied that shrapnel caused her death, saying Bhutto was killed when she tried to duck back into the vehicle, and the shock waves from the blast knocked her head into a lever attached to the sunroof, fracturing her skull.

At a news conference, Cheema played a videotape of the attack showing Bhutto waving, smiling and chatting with supporters from the sunroof as her car sat unmoving on the street outside a campaign rally. Three gunshots rang out, the camera appeared to fall, and the tape ended.

Bhutto was slain while campaigning for the crucial Jan. 8 parliamentary elections in which she hoped to return as prime minister of the nuclear-armed country, a key U.S. ally in the war on terrorism. Upon her return from exile in October, she survived an assassination attempt. She had repeatedly complained that the government of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf did not give her adequate security.

Also Friday, Cheema said the government recorded an "intelligence intercept" in which militant leader Baitullah Mehsud "congratulated his people for carrying out this cowardly act." He gave no further details on the nature of the intercept.

Cheema described Mehsud as an "al Qaeda leader" and said he was also behind the Oct. 18 bombing against Bhutto's homecoming parade through Karachi that killed more than 140 people.

she was in a armored car supplied by the government but she was stupid enough to open the sunroof and stand up when the vehicle is surrounded by thousands of people.
Do you think in a country like U.S with all the security and secret service George Bush have the courage to do the same in south LA as Bhutto did? I don''t think so.

I think b-easy63 has it correct.

But that means that her standing up through the sunroof in the stopped vehicle was probably pre-planned because she would have been safe in the vehicle.

And since Musharref was supposedly planning security, he would be able to tip off the assassin as to the best place to stand.

If the autopsy shows no bullets or shrapnel then is it more likely she bumped her head on the way down or that her bodyguard finished the job?

Nancy_Naive,

Re: "By show of hands, was it

1) Musharraf?
2) Al Qaeda?
3) CIA?
4) KGB?
5) 1&2?
6) 3 with help from 5 and 4?
...
99) Castro and Chavez?

Regards,"

It is "believed" that her murder is "linked" to al-CIA''da. This attack has all of the "hallmarks" of this group, with probable assistance from al-Mossad''da and al-ISI''da.

Hmmm?

I guess Mushy has learned a good deal from George "We don''t need no stinking facts" Bush.

Blame everything on Al Qaeda.

Oh, bullsh!t. They didn''''t even do an autopsy. How can they possibly know what caused her death without one?

Maybe, the person that had the gun and bomb caused her death?

It DOES NOT MATTER what was the exact cause of her death. The ONLY FACT that matters is that SHE WAS MURDERED! By whom is yet to be determined. (My bets are 1. Musharif or 2. Al Queda).

The real world ain''t no fuggin CSI episode!

"Pakistan: Bullets Did Not Kill Bhutto"

Therefore there is NO need, we repeat, NO need for an autopsy. And we found a phone call from Al Qaeda intercepted by intelligence--claiming responsibility.

The technology to intercept was developed only in the few minutes after Bhutto''s death--which is why intercept was possible AFTER the assassination but not before. Now we can all vote for Musharref, also a ''victim'' of assassination plots.

Rule #1 of the shark pool: "If you cannot skew the playing field to win--then eliminate the competition. Wins by default are still wins, and like the highlander--the last man standing rules. ''''There can be only one"

Of course, Musharref did it--or Al Qaeda works to ensure his continued rule? Wonder why?

Maybe because Bhutto had agreed to allow America to have free reign in hunting terror suspects in Pakistan? Something Musharref always resisted? Musharref and the terrorists have a truce or understanding?

The dictator plays both sides of the equation and hopes to profit from both--rule number 2 of the shark pool.

Musharref rule number 8: No matter how big, bad or hungry a shark is--there is always a bigger shark that eventually takes a bite. Murderer.

That "spin" is so good it should counteract gravity...she wasn''t actually assassinated, she just bumped her head.

It''s government spin, to make themselves look like they are doing something, while in fact, they are doing nothing.
