(AP)  Former President Bill Clinton said Monday that his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, is the presidential candidate best equipped to reshape the nation's economy as the U.S. strives for energy independence.

"She got a vision for America," Mr. Clinton told a crowd at an exposition center in this early voting state. "She's got good plans to implement the vision."

Mr. Clinton said the need for alternative energy in the face of global warming creates opportunity for jobs. The nation can train a generation of "green-collar workers" who don't have to have college degrees, he said.

"I'm telling you, this is the greatest opportunity we've ever had," said the former president, who planned a day of events in the state.

Several recent polls show Hillary Clinton, a New York Democrat, with a solid lead over rival Sen. Barack Obama here although a Mason-Dixon Polling and Research survey out earlier this month had the two essentially tied.

The former president was to meet briefly with civil rights activist Al Sharpton in Columbia later in the day, the campaign of Sen. Hillary Clinton confirmed.

Sharpton spokeswoman Rachel Noerdlinger said Sharpton will meet with Mr. Clinton to talk about hate crimes and civil rights issues and the former president mentioned Sharpton during his morning speech. Mr. Clinton also was to meet with ministers and business leaders and work on efforts to turn out black voters in the Jan. 19 primary.

Sharpton has not endorsed a candidate in the primary and a spokeswoman for Sharpton's National Action Network said that wasn't expected Monday. During the 2004 primary in South Carolina, Sharpton turned in one of his best primary showings, and this week he was scheduled to hold two days of meetings that include get-out-the vote efforts with black residents.

The black vote is critical to a Democratic primary win in South Carolina and in 2004 comprised nearly half the ballots cast. An Associated Press-Pew Research poll last month showed Hillary Clinton breaking even on the black vote with Obama, an Illinois senator who earlier this month toured early voting states with media mogul Oprah Winfrey.

Mr. Clinton started his campaign day in Sumter, home to an Air Force base, before heading to Orangeburg. Both cities have large numbers of black voters. In Orangeburg, he told a crowd of about 200 people that his wife has been able to work well in the U.S. Senate with South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham. The former president described Graham as the man "who tried to run me out of town when I was president."

Mr. Clinton was to wrap up the day at a reception and banquet honoring former Gov. Richard Riley, who served as his education secretary.

Someone once said the most dangerous thing in the world is a politician with a good idea. I am glad to see the candidates lining up to jump on the "green" bandwagon but only time will tell if anything good happens. Americans seem to forget whose "green" pays for the green energy. We are silly to assume that anyone besides us will fund that research. Either by taxes or higher energy prices "we the people" get the bill and the politicians get campaign contributions. The other thing that bothers me is that most of these solutions don''t save the environment but only change who profits from it. Biofuels may cut oil usage but how do you grow it? Cultivate more land or take food out of the food supply. That way we can feel good about our SUVs while children starve. Are we going to grow this stuff organically? I am all for wind power but has anyone stopped to ask what the climatic effect will be if we begin pulling high levels of energy out of the atmosphere? What effects do solar cells and their manufacture have on the environment? Do we really want a politician whose education is in law or political science and who is owned by whoever has the most money to answer those questions for us?

George H.W. Bush Says He Did Not Agree to Diplomatic Mission With Bill Clinton
Former President George H.W. Bush is taking issue with statements made by Bill Clinton Monday that the duo would embark on a mission of diplomacy around the world if his wife is elected president.
Clinton reportedly made the statements in South Carolina, saying he and Bush would spread the message that %u201CAmerica is open for business and cooperation again,%u201D implying that the former president would need to swoop in to repair diplomatic damage wrought by his son.
But George H.W. Bush%u2019s Chief of Staff Jean Becker released a statement Tuesday saying he and Clinton have made no such plans - even though the two have grown close through charity work since their 1992 presidential election match up.
OBVIOUSLY, MR. "BLOW HARD" NEEDS TO CONSULT WITH HIS WIFE, MRS "NOT BLOW HARD ENOUGH" BEFORE HE MAKES COMMENTS ABOUT HER AGENDA.

You make fools of people, muddy lady. For your own benefit. And then wonder why people think you a fool too.

Today''s fool, tomorrow''s genius. How many can boast of that? I no longer care to be regarded as clever or foolish. I''m above all that now.

**** - I think you''re jumping to a LOT of conclusions based on misguided assumptions because I''m a Democrat and I''m a woman.

I totally mangled up my posts because of my ADHD and my commitment to truth even if it makes me look like a doof, but my assessment about Billary LLC intending to give $18BILLION to big oil still stands.

If you really want to discredit my assertions, I''d be interested to hear how else Billary is going to get big oil to finance $33billion worth of alternative energy R&D.

You know how I can tell that Obama and Edwards were the ones who came up with the ideas is because of context of their points, the follow-through focus of their campaigns, and their demonstration of awareness of the plight of the people their ideas seek to help:

Hillary - ticks of a series of points, all of which are focused on the impersonal: forming committees, setting benchmarks, carrot and stick financing to influence industry (including the building industry)

Bill - has a vision which "creates jobs" for people "who don''t have to have college degrees" :O

Obama - talks about wanting to train at-risk youth with construction skills and knowledge so that they will be able to implement green technology well into the future. Has also talked about wanting to promote mentorship of boys without fathers so that they can pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. Has also talked about believing everybody deserves a shot at the American dream

Edwards - talks about how farmers have the land to be able to harness solar and wind energy, and that all the small towns affected by loss of manufacturing jobs to China could have a comparative advantage in this arena and build a niche market of ''green-collar'' jobs. He''s talked extensively of his mining roots and has spent by far the most time campaigning in rural areas. He''s also pledge to take on big business for their inability to look out for the middle-class (as opposed to "who don''t have to have college degrees")

"I get a charge out of neo cons. They have nothing and yet they still attack one of the most popular Presidents in US history.

Your witch hunt failed and America shut you down. Stop trying to discredit Bill Clinton you failed at it so many times that it just got sickening."

Popular only to Liberals and the Leftist Press (and fat pig interns wearing blue dresses).

Shut down? Not by you looney lefty toons. You have a majority in Congress and EVEN WITH THAT you cannot get anything DONE!

No need to stop trying to discredit Clinton, he did it to himself and was IMPEACHED!

Ha ha ha ha ha! I just love to read your delusions!

Too good not to share:

To All My Democrat Friends:
Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2008, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wish.

To My Republican Friends:
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
