Mourners Gather In South London; Jailed American Roommate Faces More Questioning

(CBS/AP)  Hundreds of mourners crowded the Croydon Parish Church in South London Friday to pay their last respects to Meredith Kercher, the British college student whose half-naked body was found in a pool of blood in Italy six weeks ago.

CBS News correspondent Elizabeth Palmer reports Kercher's body was returned to England from the central Italian university town of Perugia one month ago, where she lived with her 20-year-old American roommate Amanda Knox.

She could not be buried until Italian police decided they did not need any further post-mortem examinations.

In Italy, Rudy Hermann Guede - an Ivory Coast national and one of the three suspects in Kercher's murder, was to appear in court Friday.

He was extradited from Germany two weeks after the killing, and has admitted being in the students' house that night.

Also in custody are Knox, from Seattle, and her 23-year-old Italian ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito. Under Italian law, all suspects can be held in jail for a year while the investigation continues, and prosecutors decide whether to file formal charges.

Judges are due to question Knox again in prison on Monday, reports Palmer.

Although Knox's initial statements to the police are reported to have contained serious contradictions, in an interview to an Italian newspaper through her lawyer, Knox repeated that she did not murder her roommate.

"It's not true we argued every day. I liked living with her." She said, "It has made me feel awful that people think I killed Meredith. … The things they have said on TV and in the newspapers have hurt me ... they describe me as if I were a monster."
