Wounded Vet Helped By "Heroes At Home"

Organization Fixed Up His Home; He's Already Helping Others As His Recovery Continues

(CBS)  This year, the holidays will be brighter for one family in Michigan's Upper Peninsula -- and a deserving soldier, thanks to a program that fixes up homes for veterans all over America.

"Heroes at Home" provides an army of volunteers to help returnees, and their families while they're deployed. The organization works hand-in-hand with a group called Rebuilding together.

On The Early Show Friday, co-anchor Harry Smith told of the remarkable progress being made by Bobby LaMarche, who was badly wounded in an ambush in Baghdad in June. At first, he was fighting for his life, with a shattered spine after being shot in the neck. But he fought the good fight, and now has taken his first steps. He's even mentoring other physical therapy patients.

LaMarche's home was also in need of repair -- and that, says Smith, is where Heroes at Home and Rebuilding together came in.
